Read 2 times. Last read March 26, 2018 to April 2, 2018.
(3.2 average because it's an anthology but the last three stories are actually essays so I'm rounding it down to 3)
It's an anthology so bear with me...
THE CASE OF COLONEL WARBURTON'S MADNESS - Watson is telling Holmes this story; it's a little after Watson's residency and it happens to be in San Francisco, Californina. It's basically a reverse MUSGRAVE RITUAL but still unique and fun. Also, it plays on "Three Continents Watson" and Holmes' reaction was also mine. (3 stars)
GHOST AND THE MACHINE - The Holmes family is on holiday in the USA and it's Mycroft's POV through his diary. A la SHERLOCK, Mycroft and Sherlock are the smart ones, the dad is the dumb one. The plot is ok, as it's a man from the War Department who is going to a seance and sees things. The seance is based on a true family, but it's really not that great. Also, the exchange between Mycroft and the random dude is 10/10. (2.5 stars)
EXCERPTS FROM AN UNPUBLISHED MEMOIR - The pastiche trope of finding a manuscript of a story is here, except it's mailed to him. Holmes is written as "he who shall not be named" (making me smirk). Holmes is on an adventure with a Sheakspeare acting troupe traveling to boom towns. Holmes throws some shade on the others and it's great. (3 stars)
THE FLOWERS OF UTAH - This is right after Study in Scarlet, as a Mormon benefactor wants the two to get to the truth of what was happening in Utah. Watson is the star of the show, and it also features the illusive Lucy from SiS. It's an ESCAPING POLYGAMY situation. Also, we get another "Three Continents Watson" reference and it again made me laugh. (4 stars)
THE ADVENTURE OF THE COUGHING DENTIST - This one is also right after SiS, but they are sent by Scotland Yard this time. It's also doubling as a bonding trip for the boys and it's adorable. Watson's sass is the greatest and they also meet Wyatt Earp. (4.5 stars)
THE MINISTER'S MISSING DAUGHTER - This was my introduction to the Gaslight Series (first book: Murder on Astor Place) and it's simple but effective. Sarah is the greatest and we need another crossover. (5 stars)
THE CASE OF COLONEL CROCKETT'S VIOLIN - The two investigate claims of a violin being Davy Crockett's in Texas. Poor Watson was let down that the west had been tamed, and in an interesting turn of events, Holmes loves Mexican food. (3 stars)
THE ADVENTURE OF THE WHITE CITY - Watson comes with Holmes, who reunites with Buffalo Bill during the Word's Fair in Chicago to protect Sitting Bull. (2.5 stars)
RECALLED TO LIFE - Holmes is in America during his "death" and helps Robert Battle to clear Battle's name. (Also, why does Robert Battle sound familiar? Anyone?) We see Holmes' hidden heart and I love it. Warnings for hinted child trafficking. (5 stars)
THE SEVEN WALNUTS - It's Harry and Theodore/Dash (Dash is the narrator) Houdini. Harry's a fanboy solving a case. I'm sorry to say I've read better fanfiction than this :( (1.5 stars)
THE ADVENTURE OF THE BOSTON DROMIO - This one was also not that great. The only thing I really remember (even with my notes next to me) is that the two are in the USA for holiday and they meet Watson's doctor from SiS. Also, cats. (1.5 stars)
THE CASE OF THE RIVAL QUEENS - So it starts out with Holmes wanting to visit Wyatt Earp's ice cream parlor in San Diego???? What?? But it does get better, as it deals with a secretish society with bees and silkworms, and the title is a pun. (3 stars)
THE ADVENTURE OF THE MISSING THREE QUARTERS - A typical story. We have old aquaintances of Holmes in Chicago and Watson is remarried. (3 stars)
THE SONG AT TWILIGHT - We have a Holmes narrator when Holmes has retired and Mycroft has called him into the field with super secret spy stuff. We also get a "Three Garridebs" and "Dancing Men" reference. The plot is great but a few things come out of left field, like the fact that Holmes falls in love (but it's actually pretty well done) and has a hinted sex scene, nonconsensual drugs, and death. (4 stars)
And then I refused to read the last three sense they were essays and not actual stories.
Recommened 13+ for mild language, hinted child trafficking, and the stuff in TWILIGHT
