First of all,
Wow. I just finished this. I need to take a deep breath, my head hurts, my heart hurts, my brain is a mess and I'm still processing.
Okay... Leigh Bardugo is amazing. This is no secret, this sounds extremely obvious to all of those who have read Six of Crows already, but I'll never get tired of repeating it. The plot of this second book was by far the most intelligent, well planned and mind blowing thing I've read. It was full of plot twists, it kept changing as you read and you just never got bored.
These characters are all exceptional. They're intricate, they're puzzle pieces, they all have good traits and bad traits...They're real, they feel very real in a very fictional world. How does she manage to do this? Background stories, that's how. She gives life to the characters by giving them a detailed past, a present and a future... It's wonderful really. In the first book of the series, I felt like Jesper and Wylan were missing exactly that, but she more than made up for it in Crooked Kingdom.
So, with all these positive things written down, why 4 stars instead of 5?
It dragged. It did, at least for me. I started reading the book when it came out on September 27 and only managed to finish it today. At first, I blamed it on college, on eyesight issues and etc... But that's not all there was to it, because I had a lot of time to myself and just spent it on youtube procrastinating.
Thing is, there was a lot to process after every chapter, a lot of new info just kept coming, and while that keeps things interesting and complex, it can also be taken too far. When you take it too far, some of the readers are gonna take a whiiiiile to go through the book because if they want to understand it they have to stop, pause and definitely not read it in one sitting. That's what I think happened here, and that's why I'm giving it this rating.
That said, this is one great book, and it's definitely going on my "favorites" shelf.
