This book is a straight up police detective story, set in an English rural locale.
Unfortunately, this one didn't really hit the spot for me. I didn't develop much empathy for the lead characters, including the main police interest in the shape of Fiona and Peter, and for me there were too many descriptive passages that just didn't add anything, whilst they did slow down the flow of the story.
On the other hand, there is a lengthy cast of characters and plenty of teasing false leads to entertain you as you work your way towards the conclusion of the story.
The best part of this book for me, and the stand out character in the story, is Gladys. She is the very heart and soul of the book and there is a depth and complexity to her that really peeks your interest whenever she is on the scene.
