I really loved this story but the writing style just isn't for me, I finished this with a headache because I loved the characters and the story so much I needed to push through. It still gets five stars. Genuine physical pain can't stop me from adoring this book and what it has to say.
That being said, I think that this book is one of the most important I have personally read. I am a straight woman, I have never had to struggle to define my gender or sexuality. I have, however, been questioned about my sexuality and have felt the need to define myself to those people. Billie strikes a chord within me in that regard, and I think that the many different people who have read and will read this book will find some part of themselves between the pages.
This book at the core, is about someone struggling to define themselves on their own terms, while under the watchful eye of a small town judging and defining everyone on their terms. Billie has to deal with busybody neighbours, a loving but fearful father, her relationship with God and one hell of a reputation on her path to learning who she is and how she fits into the world. It's a journey that matters, even if you only identify with one of the pitstops.
Also I really fucking love Davey.
