bookshelves: adult, classics, fiction, romance, re-read, own-in-hardback, reading-challenge, setting-england, historical-early-1800s, favourite, audiobook
Read 3 times. Last read December 1, 2024 to December 9, 2024.

First Read: 18 October 2011
Second Read: 7 January 2022: I am not quite sure why it took me so long to re-read this. I think maybe because I watch the (2007) movie maybe half a dozen times a year so that probably gives me the quick fix I am after. A beautiful re-read.
Third Read (Audiobook): 9 December 2024: Timeless. This has become my favourite Jane Austen book and I can't help purchasing different editions when I come across them. A nice change to listen to the words.

Original Review
I don't know why it took me so long to read this book. I love Jane Austen books. Pride & Prejudice and Emma are recurring parts of my reading plan. I somehow got it into my head that this was a b-grade book and that it was a tragedy (don't ask me why I made that jump as after all it is a Jane Austen book). My reading group decided to read this and I decided it was time to at long last read Persuasion.

Wow! I love this book. I love Anne and Captain Wentworth may yet be my favourite Austen hero (replace Darcy? Is that blasphemy?). It was beautifully written as always and the recurring theme of persuasion through the book was really well done.

The letter Captain Wentworth writes at the end is just beautiful and it will warm the heart of any romantic. Yet another book to add to my recurring read list. At this rate I will barely be able to fit in any new reads.

Reading Challenge
Aussie Readers 2022 January Michael Robotham challenge: Michael was a journalist who did significant work in England. Read a book set in the UK.

Aussie Readers 2024 Annual Vowel Book Titles: November/December (Book Title contains all vowels - AEIOU) - Read books where the first letter of the title appears in pErsUAsIOn
Aussie Readers 2024 December "Richard Osman" Challenge: Osman is a TV presenter, producer, director and novelist. His debut novel was published in 2020 and sold over a million copies just in the UK. Read a best selling book.

Quotes TheMadHatter Liked

Jane Austen
“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes? I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent creature! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in F. W.

I must go, uncertain of my fate; but I shall return hither, or follow your party, as soon as possible. A word, a look, will be enough to decide whether I enter your father's house this evening or never.”

The Bookworm Siblings [|] good review!

Amyiw "...another book to add to my recurring read list. At this rate I will barely be able to fit in any new reads." Ain't that the truth.

So I really liked the 1995 movie. I feel like it was filmed better though I like the Wentworth was better cast in 2007. Don't like the Netflix 2023 at all. Love the book but my love of 1995 might be that I saw the movie before the book. Pride & Prejudice I read first.

I like this comparison of the 2 movies. Put youtube dot com in front of
