Lovecraft generally weaves a suspenseful and horrific tale when he writes short stories, but in The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, which is more of a novella, the story falls a little flat and is a bit of a taxing read, especially with the lengthy paragraphs and no dialogue. He seems to have taken elements from Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Portrait of Dorian Gray and threw in a few elements of his his own cosmic horror to create a story about a young man, Charles Ward, who becomes infatuated with an ancient relative from Salem who worked in the dark arts, along with some colleagues, calling things forth which they can't put down. Ward seemingly goes insane and his family and a doctor attempt to discover what the cause is that drove Charles to madness as he hid himself away in a laboratory where foul odors and strange sounds scared all who came near.
The story is still an interesting piece of the Cthulhu mythos, but it is definitely not of the quality of some of Lovecraft's other classics.
