Rachel Krall is a true-crime podcast host who is covering a rape trial in a small North Carolina town where everyone has an opinion. The defendant is a champion swimmer who had the Olympic trials in his plans. The accusation comes from a teenage girl who is so devastated that it's questionable whether she will be emotionally able to testify in court.

Rachel finds a letter on her windshield asking her to look into another crime that happened 25 years ago. Her correspondent thinks her older sister was murdered, although the official cause of death was drowning. Rachel is repeatedly contacted by letters, but the letter writer does not show her face until the end. There are connections in town between the two cases, as well as similar ways in which gossipers treat victims of rape and assault.

I didn't see how the correspondent would know Rachel's location to drop off a letter to her without being seen in some cases. Many other parts of the plot seemed very realistic, especially the small town secrets and coverups for prominent families. The book is a fast-moving story that kept my interest. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 stars.
