A collection of Hemingway's early short stories, originally published as a collection in 1927. I think Hemingway was a great writer despite, or perhaps because of his personal flaws

You can read these different stories, they're good reading just for the simple narrative but also good when you think beyond to his sparse writing style for his deeper message. A good example is CHE TI DICE LA PATRIA, which tells of a trip the Hemingway character and a friend take into Italy, good writing but when you read carefully you see Hemingway's indictment of Mussolini's fascism which Hemingway found to be ruining his beloved Italy. It's important to remember that this written well before World War II, Mussolini's attack on Ethopia in the early 30s and while much of the world was enamored with Mussolini. The story was made even better by reading various reviews and discussions of its background.

This collection includes "The Killers" one of my favorite all time stories, and it is so much better than all the subsequent movies. I can go years without reading that story but still be haunted by the ex-boxer's lonely resignation in this boarding house room when Nick Adams comes to warn him of the killers

"Hills like White Elephants" never mentions the word "abortion" and was written at a time when it was not discussed in public, but the story's telling of the conversation of the man and woman is so eloquent, it is not a political statement but a personal story of sadness and emptiness that hits home even more after you realize that you read the story without learning the name of either character
