Generally the plot is standard dystopian road trip, but the writing is beautiful and reclusive Rachel's developing bond with young mother Hannah and her sick child Isiah is described very well. The writer is obviously a naturalist with a strong affinity and care for the world around her and this is communicated through her wonderful descriptions of the Australian bush. The scene where they drive through the fires is a big cut above average, breathtaking and terrifying.
A couple of things didn't work: the armed militia who pop up in numbers and murder the doctors who are trying to save them - why? People instantly turning into violent irrational murderers is a trope of dystopian but it particularly didn't fit here.
And the shadowy creatures who have caused the mega-death - maybe I'm missing something but they seemed way too vague and woolly. They turned up where there was friction and unrest? They feed on fear and like babies? Their origins might have something to do with human activity and only some people can actually see them? It's all quite intriguing but felt rather like the author pitched an interesting foe concept and then copped out of explaining it after the initial brainwave. Hm. World ends clearly and logically explained are so much more satisfying.
