A haunted house with a mind of its own, paranormal creatures attacking from the mist, and a world hidden beneath our feet - this book had everything I could’ve asked for from a fantasy novel! Add in a mysterious, brooding love interest and how could I not give it 5 stars?
This was the second book I read by Alix E. Harrow (I read The Ten Thousand Doors of January last year) and her ability to craft other worlds continues to amaze me. Her writing style borders on poetic and is rich with descriptions that at times made me forget I was reading.
Opal was the kind of FMC I love reading about most, one who’s suffered loss and has had to learn to survive and take care of her brother on her own. Her witty dialogue brought a lightness to the darker parts of this book, and her obsession with seeking out stories about Starling House reminds me of my own story seeking as a kid.
I listened to the audio of this book, and while I know I would’ve loved the physical version as well there was something special about being able to close my eyes and immerse myself in the world Harrow created. 10/10 would recommend to all fantasy and gothic horror fans!
