I had read this before, but I re-read it after reading Her Dark Curiosity, which was inspired by Jekyll & Hyde, as the previous book, The Madman's Daughter, was inspired by The Island of Dr. Moreau.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde has a wonderfully gothic feel. I love the sense of claustrophobia you get in the life of Dr Jekyll. The hubris of the scientist who believes that he will always be in control of his "creation." The sense of duality is also important. He seems to think anything he does in as Mr. Hyde is not his responsibility. (I beg to differ.)

An excellent read.

Conny Streff if you enjoyed Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde you should check out two more other books. They're no classics but retell Stevenson tale from a different perspective which is actually quite fascinating. Mary Reilly by Valery Martin retells the tale from the housemaid's persepctive and Emma Tennant gives it quite another twist in Two Women of London.
