Deadpool moves to Tokyo and makes a mess of everything!
Everyone’s favorite Merc with a Mouth is back! As a member of the newly formed Samurai Squad, Deadpool moves to Tokyo, where hesoon runs afoul of some familiar faces. Whether he’s teaming up with new heroes, battling gods, attending concerts, or being repeatedly dismembered, Deadpool alwaysbrings chaos and his characteristic sense of humor along with him!
Deadpool lands in Tokyo with a bang! Several bangs in a row, actually. Plus a few slashes, a thud, a fwoosh or two, and finally, a huge kaboom! What could possibly go wrong when Iron Man invites Deadpool to the Samurai Squad of the Avengers? After all, Deadpool is just in it for the money…and the trip to Japan. This is fine, right?
"The bloody-minion accent pieces and the scientist-impaled-on-Rebar sculpture are over the top. Who's responsible for the decorating? Were any civilians harmed?" -- Iron Man, surveying the carnage
"Hmm? Oh, it was like that when I got here. No worries - the editor'll slap a lil' disclaimer down here. Anywhoo, whatcha doing here, buddy?" -- Deadpool, smart-assedly breaking the 4th wall as usual
*Editor's Note: All explosions were supervised by a safety expert.*
Although by no means a classic, Deadpool: Samurai, Vol. 1 offers up a peculiar and screwball story (no surprises there) that melds the mercenary antihero with the style of manga. He's shipped off to the 'Land of the Rising Sun' to captain an improvised new faction of the Avengers known as the 'Samurai Squad.' (His second banana is Sekura Spider, an exasperated but winning young lady with a costume and super-powers similar to a certain friendly neighborhood wall-crawler.) Their primary nemeses? God of mischief Loki and . . . a psychotic nerd fan of a pop singer?! Again, this will never be called the finest or quintessential Deadpool tale, but it was heavy on the ultra-violent action scenes - being rendered in black & white softens the graphic brutality - and quippy dialogue to make it a quick and relatively entertaining read. My favorite moment was a legendary star-spangled Avenger's surprise appearance at a 'welcome party,' and his gee-whiz willingness to wear a silly party hat and glasses.
Deadpool finally gets his wish: he can join the Avengers! But he’s gotta go to Japan to be a member. Also, he’s going to be in an Avengers spin-off group called Samurai Squad. And none of the Avengers are part of it. Yup, Wade’s finally made it! To celebrate, he’s gonna do Avengers stuff like fight Loki.
I think it’s my lingering Dragon Ball fandom that makes me expect better of Shonen Jump books even though they’re as hit-and-mostly-miss as Marvel and DCs books are - which is exactly the case with this Jump/Marvel collab, Deadpool: Samurai, Volume 1.
The only questionably-appealing aspect of this one is the novelty of reading a Deadpool comic as a manga, because otherwise this couldn’t be a more generic outing for the character. Deadpool fights a series of enemies with no consequences or point besides being that’s what he does; Marvel superheroes are embarrassed to be around him; he breaks the fourth wall constantly (mostly riffs on Shonen/manga readers); and the never-ending bad jokes.
They wanted Spider-Man and Venom to be in this but couldn’t get the real characters for some reason so exact replicas are introduced, albeit instead of muscled-dudes they’re teen girls because Japan. “Sakura Spider even has an identical backstory to Peter Parker’s! It’s so uncreative. Loki’s the bad guy just cos. Like all the characters, he’s behaving generically. He’s the baddie so he’s doing baddie things for no other reason. It really is the most boring story.
Unless you’ve never read a Deadpool or Marvel comic before, I can’t imagine anyone will be remotely entertained by any of this unimaginative dross - Deadpool: Samurai needs to go away and commit seppuku!
If you like your Deadpool with way more speed lines and way fewer backgrounds, this may be the Deadpool for you. However, if you require a story that's more than lazy writing that goes nowhere and tons of jokes about Shonen Jump, this is not it.
At times, it's a tad too meta, but most of the jokes land or are dropped before they become tiresome. There are some great Easter Eggs for fans of both marvel and manga, some of which blend together to make a perfect combination for those that follow the two storytelling mediums. Despite how enjoyable this is, it doesn't offer anything new or overly interesting plot wise, settling for something reminiscent of a gag manga instead.
Well, it's not as bad as the Spider-Man manga Marvel brought over from Japan in the late '90s, but this Japanese-created iteration of Deadpool has very little going for it. The short take: Deadpool is anchoring an Avengers sub-group called Samurai Squad and tasked by Captain America with protecting Japan. First recruits include young Japanese women horning in on the branding for Spider-Man and Venom. The fourth wall is broken constantly, and the script gives many, many shout-outs to classic manga titles.
I doubt this project could be saved even if Ryan Reynolds read it aloud, purring it directly into my ear. Imma stick with the movies.

I’ve always loved "Deadpool" movies, but for some reason, the comics themselves never really drew me in—I guess I felt they leaned a bit too heavily on the goofy side.
That said, I’m really enjoying this new wave of Marvel-themed manga. It’s fascinating to see these iconic characters reimagined in a different medium, offering a fresh perspective compared to traditional American comics.
This "Deadpool" manga delivers exactly what you’d hope for. It’s packed with laugh-out-loud moments, and I absolutely love how Deadpool’s trademark 4th-wall-breaking humor shines through. The way he pokes fun at Marvel and its characters is spot-on and adds an extra layer of charm.
Overall, it was a highly entertaining read. Fans of "Deadpool" won’t be disappointed!
Whatever the company, there is only one Deadpool. With a couple of "knockoff" side characters and Marvel guest stars, Deadpool makes his fourth wall busting Jump series debut.
Deadpool, always the mercenary anti-hero, is not offered the opportunity to be a bigtime hero. Are his new partners and the adoration of the public what Deadpool always wanted? Does he have what it takes yo be a hero?
I really enjoyed this book. I was not as action-packed as I thought it would be, but if I thought Deadpool broke the fourth wall in Marvel's comic, he obliterates it here. It's a really enjoyable series. I can't wait for the next volume.
This was totally brilliant. Loved seeing Deadpool in a new environment, loved the Hatsune Miku/Venom combo. Just and absolute delight, start to finish.
Sometimes you just need to read silly comic book metafiction with a helping of cartoonish violence. Deadpool, in either his traditional guise or in this Manga version, is never going to be world changing, but it's a silly, fun title that gets you to think explicitly about tropes and still tells a competent comic book plot that had me interested in the next installment.
**Thanks to the artist, publisher, and NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was a little skeptical at first, but genuinely ended up liking this more than I thought I would. The fourth wall breaks are hilarious. Stays true to Deadpool with all the fun that a manga series needs.
This was fun, but overdone in too many ways that made it ... less fun in the end.
It started out a page-turner, the first 1/4 to 1/3 was really good and fun ... and then you realize there's really not much story here, it's just about 99% 4th wall breaks. Like, I get it, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall, but not with every single word he ever says all the time.
At least I think so, correct me if I'm wrong, I've only read a little Deadpool and watched it. Regardless of whether this is common, it was too much in this one.
Then this joke about off-brand superheroes is just kind of annoying. Like, get the real thing or come up with your own unique powers/heroes.
Anyway, not as fun as I thought it would be nor as it promises in the beginning.
I can't stop laughing!!! This is exactly how it would be if Deadpool was in manga! From all the 4th wall breaks, as well as the anime/manga/otaku/Jump inside jokes, this is perfect for fans of both. Story is simple and ridiculous. Deadpool gets hired by The Avengers to go to Japan and join the Samurai Squad, consisting of Sakura Spider (a cute Japanese girl with the exact same powers as Spider-Man) and they recruit Neiro (a pop icon who has a symbiote she has named Kage, which means Shadow in Japanese...LOL). They fight against Loki, and the Volume ends with the arrival of Thanos. I have to keep reading this! Strong recommend, especially for people who like the content.
This one was fun, not much more to say. Nothing groundbreaking here, but it got quite a few laughs out of me. I love how much the other Avengers hate Wade and the original characters were entertaining enough. I might read the second volume if I come across it.
It's a Deadpool manga. A very self aware Deadpool manga, filled with references to classic manga. Some of the cracks are really funny, but it falls flat as often as it hits, and the story doesn't have much going for it. Loki shows up as an uncomplicated villain, which feels oddly regressive. Deadpool doesn't so much break the fourth wall as refuse to admit it exists, which is funny the vast majority of the time and keeps the book moving along even when it isn't hilarious. Fun, and basically exactly what I expected.
Deadpool is tasked by Iron Man to head the new Japan based team the ‘Samurai Squad.
Deadpool making the move to manga makes perfect sense to me and his quirks and appeal have crossed over very well. The story, basic as it is, serves its purpose but it’s the characterisation that is spot on here. Deadpool constantly breaks the fourth wall and pokes fun as manga, Japan, Shonen Jump and of course himself. The tone is pitch perfect, the action decent and the inclusion of characters , that even Deadpool calls derivative, works really well. A shmbiote joined with an Idol? Perfect.
It’s very much in the vain of the Deadpool movies but it’s a fun ride that genuinely got some laughs from me.

This was amazing. It's everything that you would want from a Deadpool comic in a manga format. The fourth wall breaks, talking to the reader, Deadpool's over the top antics - everything is just as you would expect it. I loved every minute of it and I'm excited to read the next volume.
Средна хубост (3,5/5) - от една страна не съм най-големият фен точно на този тип хумор, от друга - краят увисна в нищото... но-о със сигурност ще си взема и следващия брой, ако види бял свят на родния пазар.
It was fun!! Some of the art style was wacky/jarring at times, as can be expected from anime art style meets american comics characters. Cute concept and can’t wait to read volume 2
Classic zany, off-the-wall Deadpool. At times it was a bit too much for me tbh, but definitely worth the read and one I will talk about at the store.
I did find it humorous that the J-Pop Idol who was cute as a button had the (spoiler spoiler). Not what one would normally expect, so I enjoyed that part, though her actions and thoughts were...a tad different, but maybe that helped her to not go all evil?
Anywho, solid 3 stars for this one. Recommended if you like Deadpool.
My thanks to NetGalley and Viz Media LLC for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

Readers can't miss Deadpool breaking the fourth wall in manga form! And I think that's all I can say without spoiling the comic. Thank you Chantelle of Viz Media, NetGalley and Edelweiss Plus for the review copy!
