Book: Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead
Read: March 5, 2012
Rating: ★★.5
I've wanted to read this book for a while now and it didn't disappoint. I found Georgina to be an extremely likeable heroine and I enjoyed her narration. The plot was a little predictable but I was still eager to find out just exactly how everything played out at the end.
I really enjoyed the supporting cast - the imp, the vampires and Carter the Angel. I liked them all a lot more than I liked Seth. Seth was a little too bland? for my liking.
I already bought the second book (after weeks of trying to find Succubus on Top only to find out it's called Succubus Nights here... ).

Same here! I hadn't heard of it before Bingo!

Date Read: 05-Mar-12

I liked this book a lot. The basic plot is our heroine, Jayne, heads off to Denver because her uncle has passed away and she has inherited his assets. After meeting some of her uncle's associates, she becomes involved in a world filled with 'riders' which are basically demons that possess humans. It's hard to say much more about the book without giving away the plot points! The whole book takes place over a short time frame (2 weeks or so), which I liked because I felt like you got to be really involved in the details of the story.
I loved Jayne, I found her very likable. She was a little bit kickass, but she still definitely was scared and unsure throughout the book, which I felt just made her more realistic and more sympathetic of a character. She had values and stuck with them throughout the book, which I loved. An example is how she was actually really pissed (view spoiler)
There was a bit of a love storyline for Jayne, but the best part was definitely the supporting characters. She ends up meeting her uncle's go-to guys, who include a 200 year old man, a buddhist zen dude, and an ex-Jesuit priest. They made for some really funny moments. I think I will definitely try the next book in this series!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Sounds good. :)
Tonight, I'll either finish Flashfire, or write my demon review.

I really liked this book. here have been a few things in this series that have surprised me, and I really like that. I liked Simon and Sage as a couple. I thought that the book kind of started to go in a few crazy directions towards the end with quick resolutions. I guess it was quick compared to the slower speed with which the first 3/4 of the book was. Not necessarily in a bad way. I think this series is different, and I really look forward to the next book. 3 1/2 stars.

I was getting two birds with one stone with this book, I read it for Bingo and for the March Cover Hunt challenge ;)
Hope you like it!

Sooo --- 4 stars the official, or is 3 1/2?
The pressure is on me now. :D Need to do two reviews. Many false starts with writing the one for the demon shelf.
I guess I better not start Oracle's Moon today....

Maybe this will be a good lesson in self control...

Kate - I did the exact same thing with Fair Game!

I just hope it works for the next shelf cause if it doesn't I think I'll have to read it next week anyway :P
I'm not very good at this waiting business.

Ferris Archer is a talyan -- a human man who was possessed by a repentant demon, called teshuva. Demons are fallen angels and the teshuva are those who "seen the error of their ways" (so to speak). They possess humans -- mostly men -- who's souls are already a bit tarnished or have a weakness that can be exploited. The path to redemption for both the teshuva and the human is to die in battle against non-repentant demons. Since demonic possession confers rapid healing and incredible strength and reflexes, dying in battle can take some doing. A talyan can live a very long time if he has a strong teshuva.
The talyans primarily face off against the lesser demons. However, the counterparts to the teshuva are the djinn -- the fallen who are happy to remain so. Djinni are hard to kill, so the talyans try to eliminate newly-possessed djinn-men before the demon can fully ascend (full possession). There are angel-possessed humans, but they stay out of the fight. Hosting a heavenly agent doesn't grant the individual the same dubious advantages the demon-possessed have -- but then again, their souls aren't in jeopardy either and they can have a somewhat normal life.
The talyans band together in the major cities and those groups are called leagues. Archer nominally belongs to the Chicago league, but he's a loner, so he rarely hunts with his fellows. However, he got a vision of an impending possession and tracks the demon to its intended target. It leads him to Sera Littlejohn. Because of the vision, Archer is responsible for either training her, or killing her if it turned out that her demon is djinn. He's not happy about any of it, of course.
As Sera is adjusting her new life -- and still trying to hold on to parts of her old one -- things start happening that point to her being targeted specifically. The lesser demons are behaving oddly and even the leagues headquarters comes under attack. It seems that Sera's possession was engineered by someone who was trying to breach the veil that separate the demon realm from the human one.
This book has been in my TBR pile since it was released. The blurb caught my attention and I'm happy to say that I did find the world the author created an interesting one.
I don't think I ever read a book where one of the characters is a thanatologist -- a person who helps the dying and the terminally ill during their final days. That's what Sera was before the car accident. She's a resilient, compassionate person. She seems like the sort of person who should have been angel-possessed. Instead, she becomes the first female to be demon-possessed in a very long time -- as far as league records can determine anyway. Nobody knows why the teshuva stopped possessing females.
As for Archer, he's tired of existence. He's been around for some time and he's lost all hope. The battle against the demons is unending and, ultimately, un-winnable as long as there are humans and free will. Everything that has mattered to him was lost a long time ago and he doesn't want to form any new attachments because he'll only loses those, too. Sera makes him feel again.
There were times when I felt I was missing something. I thought the author did a good job of trying to avoid information dumps, but occasionally I thought she was being too vague. I thought the story moved at a good pace.
The next two books look like they follow the same pattern, but with the recently released 4th book, it looks like the author shook things up some. I was planning on continuing anyway, but this last fact was an extra incentive.

I splurged on this one and bought myself the hardcover!! Haven't got it yet though, I forgot to preorder so my copy is still in the mail.

I got lucky and preordered through Amazon so it arrived on Tuesday. I always let my mom and sister borrow this series so I have to keep buying hard or paper copies. At least Amazon does the low price guarantee so it wasn't too bad.

Good luck! I went ahead and started Oracle's Moon -- so glad I did.
Based on our bingo card, I'm hoping for favorit sup --and chanting "no Re-Read" (so you ladies holding off reading FG don't have to suffer). ;-)
Writing a review for Flashfire shouldn't be as difficult, so I'm hoping to get it posted tonight/early tomorrow.

Enjoy your books ladies. :D

Team 2 -- needs Angels. They are caught up and have their stamps.
Team 12 - needs Post-apocalyptic. They still have to get their demon and pnr stamps.
There are plenty of 3-in-rows, so if neither of the above get called next week....:D

Book: Pack Challenge by Shelly Laurenston
Date Read: 11-Mar-12
Rating: ★★ and a half
I loved the humour in this book, there were parts that actually made me laugh out loud (Sara's bunny-shifter obsession was my fav). Also, I loved Sara's character. Yes, her and her friends are crazy bitches, but this is so refreshing compared to a lot of pnrs where the ladies are so vanilla, especially the 'supporting best friend' role.
The reason for only three stars was probably because it was a little bit light on the plot ((view spoiler) ). Don't get me wrong, I like my romance but I usually need a bit more of a plotline than this book gave me.
I liked the changing viewpoints, I always enjoy seeing both sides of a romance. Overall, a quick enjoyable read for me :)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Curious...will you be reading the other two books in this series?

If I'm in a really romancey-mood one day, then I will try the second book. If it doesn't wow me, then I will probably not continue with the series. To me, the book was a good quick read but I doubt it will be memorable... but sometimes that is exactly the kind of book I am in the mood to read.
Lately I've been all about the urban fantasy/sci fi/dystopia and less about the romance. I go through moods though so this might not last long!!!

You now have an updated BINGO card with a stamp on 'demons'.

Good Job!! :D

Happy Reading! :D

I recently started my paranormal mystery. It's also quiet funny.
I don't want to jinx myself...so I won't give a specific timeframe from when I finally get my pnr review posted...soonish...sometime between now and 31 December 2012. ;-) I've spent a great deal of time staring off into space, gathering my thoughts, but my laptop hasn't learned to read my mind yet. And I can forget about the office computer ever learning (government property, you know). :D

I finished Fair Game and I loved it!!! I thought it was a great addition to the series. I hope the other ladies who are reading it are enjoying it too...
I am having trouble holding off reading for next week. I have a sci fi romance that I want to start, but then I am worried it will be pulled this week and I will have nothing to read!!

Wait. You have NOTHING TO READ?

HAHAHA no no no no not nothing to read. I more meant nothing on-hand that I could read for sci fi romance. I've only just become interested in sci fi so I don't have much on hand in that category.
Nothing to read, good lord. On a positive note though, I did recently go through my tbr and deleted a ton of books that I've decided I'm no longer interested in. Still though, it will probably start growing again soon.

Whew! ;-) My selection of SFR is rather small, so I can appreciate that. However, with the way some people shelve books, it wouldn't surprise me if a series like Psy-changeling popped up on the list. :)
I need to do a tbr purge...it's been awhile...and synchronize my Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ shelf with my database while I'm at it. Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ is not an accurate reflection of what I have on hand. I normally take a week off at the end of May, so that sounds like a good weekend project for that.

Slave to Sensation shelved 7 times as Science Fiction Romance :P
I'm not finished Fair Game just yet. I think I'm trying to make it last as long as I can. Im really enjoying it so far :-)
I'm impressed with your database. I don't think I could ever be that organized.

And the funny thing is...I didn't even look. I just pick a popular series that I thought would most likely be labeled SF by other people. :D
I'm impressed with your database. I don't think I could ever be that organized.
It's a program. A modified version of . The version I have was specifically created to be a companion to The Little Guide to Your Well-Read Life: How to Get More Books in Your Life and More Life from Your Books, and called "Bookography". The cool part? It does nearly all the work: all I have to do is scan in or type the ISBN and it goes out to Amazon (B&N, etc) and populates the fields. If I'm on the book's page at Amazon, I can drag and drop the url and it populates the fields. I can tweak the information, add custom fields (like "date blogged"), export queries into Excel. It's sortable and searchable.
I'm finally going to upgrade to Version 3. Readerware stopped creating updates specifically for Bookography in 2007. I saw no point in converting to the standard version at the time.
If I had to type it all out or create it from scratch, I doubt I'd be organized. :D

I know it's all relative (currency exchange, etc.), but $40USD isn't too bad. Another program I've tried is $39.95 and I don't think it is as good as Readerware.
Advantages: I don't have to be online unless I'm adding books to it. Printable reports (without having to be online). Much better thumbnail views than GR. Since it populates the cost field, you can freak yourself out by seeing exactly how much money you've spent on books. And if I decide to delete my GR account, blog, etc, I still have everything.
Another cool feature: you can run a query and tell it to put the articles (a, an, the) at the end of the title. It will still ignore them when it sorts, even if you don't run the query.
I'm not really that impressed with GR or Shelfari when it comes to the different ways to view what I have. What GR has over the database is series book order. Since the program sorts alphabetically, I had to add "ID#??:" to every In Death book so they would always sort in book order (ex. ID#01: Naked in Death). I don't bother so much with the other series. Some have the number in parentheses after the title (that's how it was downloaded) or I can figure it out by looking at pub dates. Plus, I didn't want them to end up sorted by their series title when I looking for books starting with certain letters.

OK, so assuming you aren't using your computer when you say you're offline?
I do agree that the thumbnails looked better, but do you have a choice of covers or is it the most popular/latest and can you edit price etc info? I'm thinking the aussie covers/info will be different to US.
The paraentheses thing is a Librarian issue, in that we always did that, the PTB created the series feature and a lot of librarians stopped adding it. I still add them cause I know the series info doesn't show up everywhere yet, but I didn't realise it wasn't showing up on downloads. So another reason for me to keep adding it in. LOL
