I finished Blameless the other day - have to request the rest of the series from the library - and am now taking a break from fiction to read NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children. It's very interesting and definitely thought-provoking, as both a parent and a teacher.

Also still working on The Complete Oz in bits and pieces on my kindle :)

message 3: by Helen (new)

Helen I'm trying to finish series' that I've started and that are in print. Am starting The High Lord today, then need to continue with group reads for September and then do some catching up with Wheel of Time.

message 4: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 415 comments Working on The Last Page and finishing up War of Honor so I can move on to re-reading Crown of Slaves for the group read. Plus, Gone Girl for my new book club.

Then maybe on to Legacy of Kings, just because it will be awesome. And I might get around to finishing Ship of Destiny, if I'm lucky.

I'm working my way through The Shadow Rising and then I think it will be either another Honorverse book or Snow Crash for our group read. Then I will be tackling the next Wheel of Time book.

message 6: by Candiss (last edited Sep 01, 2012 10:16PM) (new)

Candiss (tantara) | 1207 comments I am currently reading The Martian Chronicles and Crocodile on the Sandbank.

When I'm through with those in a couple of days, it's on to The Killing Moon for our group read here, followed by Parnassus on Wheels for the Novella Club, then back to sf/f with Yellow Blue Tibia, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Oryx and Crake, and a re-read of Stories of Your Life and Others. Then a bit of historical fiction to cap the month - The Red Tent.

I am also slowly chewing away at The Shadow of the Wind, a 3-month group project I need to have done by the end of October.

message 7: by Justin (new)

Justin Wilkerson | 27 comments I'm thinking of re-reading A Dance With Dragons because some of the conversations here on GR have gotten me interested in somethings I may have missed.

message 8: by Stephan (new)

Stephan Bester (stephan7878) | 2 comments I'm currently reading A Dance With Dragons and Caliban's War.

Would like to read Snow Crash with the group, but I've never managed to read anything by Neal Stephenson.

Need to decide if I'm going to read Prince of Thorns, but that probably depends on whether or not I like Snow Crash...

You really should read it. Its fast pace, and filled with action unlike other books of his.

message 11: by Laura (new)

Laura I never did finish Windup Girl so it's still in my TBR. I started Necroscope which my husband highly recommends and says is a page-turner but haven't really gotten into it yet. I think I'm having trouble concentrating on anything lately (also wondering if it's harder to get started reading ebooks - I seem to get hooked faster for a paper book). Also picked up a couple of Vernor Vinge books The Collected Stories of Vernor Vinge and Marooned in Realtime at our local used book store's labor day sale (good deals, I spent lots of money) and those are calling me more than the books I have on my Ipad

Red Tent was excellent, I had a chance to read it with a book club earlier this year. It's a great book for discussion.

Paul (terahurts) | 2 comments I've just finished Against A Dark Background. Ken MacLeod'sNewton's Wake: A Space Opera is next on the download list.

In addition I'm listening to Earth Unaware on audio. I have lots of books on my plate for this month so hopefully I can get to them all on top of my first semester of grad school.

I think it has to do more with the glacial pace of Martin's writing as opposed to the actual writing itself

message 26: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1411 comments Finished with Miles book Komarr. I liked it, better than the last one Memory. I miss the Dendarii Mercenaries but do enjoy Miles as the Lord Auditor

Started on Pratchett's Guards! Guards!
So far pretty good.

Lindsey | 415 comments Travis wrote: "This month mainly I plan on going through Weber's safehold series starting with Off Armageddon Reef not sure how far through the series I will make it."

It's an interesting series. Great premise and the action & dialogue scenes are fun. It can drag a bit in places, however, in typical Weber descriptive monologue style.

IMO, if you've read and enjoyed his other work, you'll probably enjoy it.

message 28: by Niall (last edited Sep 05, 2012 06:28AM) (new)

Niall A little bit like Keith, I am going to try and catch up on Iain M Banks. After reading Surface Detail and really enjoying it (despite a failed attempt at reading Matter), I am now reading Consider Phlebas, but after that will move on to The Killing Moon for the group :)

In the meantime I am also reading A World History by Clive Ponting, but it is taking a backseat to fiction!

message 32: by Helen (new)

Helen So far I've read The Novice and The High Lord. I started Snow Crash but I can't get into it so I think it will be abandoned. I've now started Temeraire which I'm enjoying alot more. For groups I need to read We Need to Talk About Kevin (which I don't fancy but I didn't read last months either!) and The Knife of Never Letting Go. Then I'm three books behind on WOT. Wonder how far I'll get..

I finished The Shadow Rising (started it before the Olympics in August!!). Next up is Snow Crash. Then I'll either go back to the Honorverse with Torch of Freedom or back to the Wheel of Time with The Fires of Heaven, probably Wheel of Time since I'm already more than a month behind in that group read in another GR group.

Up soon:
A Storm of Swords
Tau Zero
Black Powder War
Fortress of Eagles
Warhost of Vastmark
Sky Coyote
and something from the stack of books by Joan Slonczewski
As you can see, I'm trying to read books #2/3/4 in a series -- I often will read only the 1st book in a series, and then not get around to books #2+, even if I LLLOOOVVVEEE book #1. The lure of something brand new ......

I've started and tossed Snow Crash twice and so I'll give it a pass. The other BOTM, I'm going to wait until it's out as a mass market paperback.

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Currently reading Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton. It's a good read, well listen (audio booking it). A good Traditional Sci-Fi story in a great traditional Space Opera tradition.

Hi Harriett :) It seems a lot of people feel the same way about that book. I liked it too. I have the next book here and will be reading it after I plow through some of the group reads.

Have you heard anything about when the 3rd book will be out? I hope it's just a trilogy. There's nothing that drives me crazier than waiting year after year for the next book release, with no idea when it will end. I made that mistake with Robert Jordan's wheel of time series.

Shel, be careful with The Eye of the World . Once you start it's hard to put down. Not to mention it's part of a 15 book series and the author died after writing book 11. Even if you don't finish, the first 3 books are definitely worth reading. The Eye of the World is easily my favorite fantasy book.

Tim, I've actually read it and made it through the first 7 books of the series before losing interest, years ago. It's been a VERY long time, and I've been mildly curious about what happens next, so maybe winning this giveaway will give me the impetus to try again.

When I sat down to read last night, though, I was so tired that a gigantic book like that felt like too big of an undertaking, so instead I picked up a memoir that's been sitting on my shelf for a while:
A Blistered Kind of Love: One Couple's Trial by Trail, which was a gift.

That's funny Shel, I made it exactly 7 books into that series myself before I gave up on it. I just tried reading book 12 The Gathering Storm and couldn't get past the first 100 pages. There were so many characters, most of whom I had no idea existed. The storyline seems bloated and got away from the core storyline of the original children from the village. Despite that, the first 3 books were so good I still think they're worth reading on their own.
