I'm doing the easy level and making it a spell-it-out with Cat. So far I've read
and now I am reading
for the C and the A I have to find a book for T. I decided to go with The Adventures of Tom Sawyerfor T. I'm not going to finish in time but these have been great books and I'm having a blast!

Update 10/21: October is turning into a busy, busy month! Not sure I'll have time for any more books. Here are the three I completed:
No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy
The Rook by Daniel O'Malley
Room by Emma Donaghue

So with those three including the T/R option for "The Rook" I've got: net, ten, ent, ned, nod, mod, dom, cod, doc, erm, tom, ton, den, nor.
Darn! No superstitions there (a google search shows no superstitions having to do with cod- can you believe it?!)

Superstitions are unsubstantiated beliefs that certain events and items can effect the outcome of things usually directly related to luck (both good or bad). It's a cause and effect type of belief system. For whatever reason (I personally believe it's because it's fun) these little ditties have been passed down from one generation to the next and seem to have found a permanent place within our society. For this challenge, try to see how many superstitions you can lay to rest. Get creative in your endeavors to check them off the list. An example of what I'm talking about would be to read Thumped by Megan McCafferty because as you can see:
the cover has a cracked egg on it and one of our superstitions is 'step on a crack and break your mothers back' Alternately, if you have a book where a character is named Cat feel free to cross of the 'don't let a black cat cross your path' superstition. Get wild, get creative, have fun and by all means whatever else you do make sure to take some time to read. :) Good luck.*giggle*
Superstitions associated with bad luck:
Friday the thirteenth
Walking under a ladder
Step on a crack, break your mother's back
Breaking a mirror equals 7 years of bad luck
Letting a Black cat cross your path
Opening an umbrella in a house
Spilling salt
Superstitions to prevent bad luck:
If you spill salt take a pinch of it and throw it over your left shoulder
Crossing your fingers
Knocking on wood
ÌýÌýÌý
Superstions associated with Good Luck and Good Luck Charms:
Four leaf clover
Lucky Rabbit's foot (although considered unlucky for the rabbit)
Horseshoe
Lady Bug
Lucky Number Seven
Pig (It's a German thing)
Find a penny pick it up and all the day you'll have good luck
Wishful Superstitions:
-Throwing a penny into a well or other body of water will gain you a wish.
- When your necklace clasp makes contact with the charm/pendant on your necklace in the front, you get to make a wish before you fix it.
- A person will be granted a wish if they end up with the larger half of a wishbone when two people each grab one end and pull.
- If you blow out all the candles on your cake on your birthday and you don't tell anyone what you wished for, it will come true.
- Wishing on the first star you see:
Easy - Read 1 to 4 books
- with a superstition revealed in it
- something associated with a superstition on the cover (cat or coin on the cover or in the title)
- opt for our ever popular spell-it-out challenge. For the spell-it-out challenge read books associate with the amount of letters appropriate for your challenge level which make up some aspect of the superstition. As always you may use the title, name of characters, or the name of an author to link it to the letters. You may ignore the 'A', 'An', 'The', etc. at the beginning of titles to get to the first significant word. So "The Virgin's Secret" would be a 'V' title and "A Highlander Christmas" would be an 'H' title." You pick which word you want or come up with one we haven't.
Example:
C - Comeback Love: A Novel by Peter Golden
A - Alice (character in Tangle of Need by Nalini Singh)
T - Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce
Moderate - Read 5 to 8 books
- with a superstition revealed in it
- something associated with a superstition on the cover (cat or coin on the cover or in the title)
- opt for our ever popular spell-it-out Challenge.
Hard - Read 9 to 12 books
- with a superstition revealed in it
- something associated with a superstition on the cover (cat or coin on the cover or in the title)
