Goede For me it was. Whole different book than I am used to. But, I liked it. It took me in.
I really like the humor of the main character. Also I like that it is kind like YA but dares to hint about sexuality. Most male writers seem to struggle with that and choose to ignore it or totally romanticize it. This book almost dares to describe it. Almost.

Jamie Marchant (jamiemarchant) | 38 comments It took me awhile to get into it. At first, I was jarred by the mixture of science fiction with fantasy. I usually like my fantasy purer. But I ended up enjoying it. Since I'm new, I'm unsure of the rules about talking about details, so I'll wait to say more.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) I pre-ordered, read, and am actually re-reading.

Somehow both threads have gone to discussing whether or not YA (like that's ever been completely defined in a way that suits every reader's view). I think characters, plot and settings have nothing to do with teenagers if that helps anyone; but, you won't be getting a lot of graphic sex scenes and very little heat/smut—other than that, a matter of opinion. Mine, it's not YA feel to me.

I'm just starting the re-read at point where just getting to know the involuntarily-retired-from-field-work Isaac and remembering how startled I was to find how much of a role Smudge managed to play in this. He's a non-communicative alien critter in insect size for criminy's sake; so before reading had no clue how author would work that in.

Loving the love of books, of course, and all the interesting libriomancer stuff. On first read, I wasn't sure about all the random characters that seemed to just show up on Isaac's doorstep. Further in had a better grasp of who was a major player in book and who was a "guest appearance" kinda thing. The sparkling vampires and other send-ups of über-popular urban fantasy tropes cracked me up—and I am one that loathed the sparkling vampire books.

Ziggy (jubilantdusk) I really liked this one. It was just plain silly which I appreciate every once in a while. I especially liked keeping track of how many references to other works I could catch.

Anna-louise | 81 comments I wasn't sure if i would like this but i did! it was entertaining I thought of it like an american TV series i would definitely watch it if it was. I've no idea where the U.P is though perhaps i should have googled. I'm from the uk so i found it very american but that's not bad it added to it. I think thats why i thought of it like a tv series, it was like Grimm and that sorta thing :) The characters were likeable and i enjoyed the humour. I hope there is a second! Hopefully it will come out more widely in the UK people are missing out on a good book me thinks.

Oh and i enjoyed the books he choose to use and the things he pulled out of them :)

I enjoyed the books he chose as well. The romance didn't quite work for me. They didn't connect enough that I thought he'd be willing to go for the 3-way deal at the end. They should have at least slept together.

Jamie Marchant (jamiemarchant) | 38 comments I don't think I did that spoiler things right. Exactly how is it supposed to work.

Nice try. You put whatever you want to hide between the two spoiler's.

I totally agree. Especially male writers find it difficult to write something like that. Now it was a bit to immature.

Anna-louise | 81 comments yeah that's the only thing that really annoyed me a little, perhaps he was saving the full on loving? The tension was a good read. I did find me going "ooo they are gonna get it on" usually means i'm into it lol. I do hope there is a second book (view spoiler)

Joseph | 1651 comments It was the first Jim Hines book that I've ever read, and I really enjoyed it. It was a nice change of pace, urban fantasy-wise. And yes, he's working on the sequel.

My favorite line: I was a pretty good libriomancer, but I was a damn good librarian.

Jute This book was kind of an eye opener for me. When I first heard about the book I was excited to see how the magic worked, but as I started reading it, quite frankly I was disappointed in the feel of the story. At first I found the tone a bit off putting. I am still not sure what caused that, since I've enjoyed books with humor before and I don't have a problem with books written for a younger audience.

I forced myself to keep reading and then something interesting happened. I ended up really liking the characters and ultimately enjoyed the book.

I don't usually do that, if I don't care for a book in the beginning, for whatever reason, I don't like it in the end.

What I think happened for me is (view spoiler)

But ultimately I liked the book's main characters and found the emotions and motives to be interesting.

So ultimately I didn't really like the story, but I liked the characters. I've never had that happen to me before so it is confusing.

Mike (mj_lang) | 6 comments I finished this book last night, and I found it enjoyable. It's definitely not on my favorite reads list, but labeling a book as enjoyable means a lot. (view spoiler)

carol. ^Agree. And odd decision-making--I feel like it moved it beyond a teen level. It was a storytelling decision that puzzled me.

Agreed. It either needed to be developed more or removed.

Why are you posting this here? This is a discussion of Libriomancer.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) Don't get me wrong, I really loved this book and am a big fan of the author —but I'm still not sure where the romance thing is headed. I get that Isaac was interested in Lena (that part played out fine although I think I would have understood better if he either made a move or bowed out because the whole dryad setup and free will aspect too uncomfortable). And I'm not sure whether it's a good or bad thing that we need to wait for another book to see where Mr. Hines is headed with it. Okay, believable that geek too much alone encounters girl he's attracted to; not so much the so in love we'll bypass personal beliefs about free will and such type of passion.
