Janice (citereh) What book series do you collect? Do you collect books on a topic by various authors? Do you collect all the titles of an author you like? Or all of that authors series of a type? For instance, Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Chronicles is one of his series that I have.

I need to find a new series to work on collecting and I am looking for ideas. Who/what are your favorites?

Paulfozz I've bought quite a few of the Bernard Cornwell series, though I've avoided getting into the Sharpe books even though I really enjoyed the TV programmes. Have been collecting the main Terry Pratchett series books as he is a firm favourite but also Tolkien, some of the Dickens books and David Attenborough's books that accompany his tv programmes.

Have also been collecting the books of Simon Barnes, who is a nature writer I enjoy immensely, and some of the New Naturalist series of books... though there are a LOT of those (121 plus about 22 monographs at last count!) so have just been buying the ones I can afford which are on subjects I'm interested in.

In the past I collected books by a number of different authors, Stephen King, Isaac Asimov, Stephen Donaldson, James Herbert... but lack of space meant I tended to pass most of those on to charity after a while to make room for the next lot of books.

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and The Wilderness series by Sara Donati are a couple that come to mind. I keep saying I will not get into anymore series and then I read a book I really like and guess what...

message 4: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Being a lover of the older authors/series, I have collected all of the Nero Wolfe books by Rex Stout. I re-read them periodically when I need a "fix"!!!

I also have collections of both Diana Gabaldon and Donati's Wilderness Series. I LIKE collecting series, so I am always on the lookout for a good one I haven't read!

To be honest, I don't think you want a list of the series I collect since it would probably take too long to read. Looking at my library, I have about 150 series that I like to read and collect from every genre you can think of, both fiction and nonfiction.

The Shardlake series is one I collect and they're one of my favourites. Shardlake is just an amazing character and Sansom is a brilliant writer. I buy his other stuff too, although I haven't gotten the newest one yet.

The other series I collect are Mark Billingham's, Tess Gerritson, Markus Heitz, anything to do with Babylon 5 and probably some fantasy and sci-fi series that I'm forgetting.

message 11: by Bara (new)

Bara (storycollector) | 14 comments I collect a lot of series. But even stand alone books are prized posession. I love fantasy so I collect fantasy series but first I have to like the first book. If I don't like the first book enough I don't want to buy the rest(may read them though). I feel like wasting space and money.
Currently I'm collecting Brandon Sanderson books, Garth Nix series Seventh tower and Keys to the kingdom, Hex hall series and Abarat. There are several more but the complete list is over 200 books in total.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Probably about 20 series I'd think. I'm a series addict. There's many more out there on my TBR that I haven't gotten to yet.

Maureen | 12 comments Well..... Let's see.....
I've been collecting a lot of Phillipa Gregory books.

I used to collect books on Joan of Arc, and Avalon. I still have them. But I should be weeding them out soon. Favorite on that is The Mists of Avalon

Of course Harry Potter series.

I used to collect all Anne Rice books. I was dating someone that lost of of his books in a divorce, so I was reading them and letting him read them. Well I lost 2/3 of them when he left me 2 months ago. I don't think I will try to buy them again.

I'm about 1/2 done collecting the No. 1 Lady Detective Agency books boy Alexander McCall Smith

For some reason I had also collected the Lemony Snicket books....

Edger Allan Poe... both serialized and collected.

The trilogy The Deed of Paksenarrion.

This list doesn't even go into manga titles and graphic novels.....

Stacey | 5 comments If it's a series, I probably collect it. My favorite read series include The Wheel of Time, Harry Potter, and Twilight. But I have a dozen or more that I've bought and haven't touched since putting them on the shelf. I look at it as my retirement plan - when I have time but no money.

message 35: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Deyo I've got everything Stephen King has written - for the most part...I could use some more shelf space - also the Jean Auel series "Clan of the Cave Bear"...Diana Gabaldon's Outlander (OF COURSE!!!) series...Anne Rice's Vampire books...may I live long enough to read all I want to!

message 36: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliefoolie) | 11 comments I had a terrible morning discovering HR had lost all my benefit papers and I traveled way into the middle of nowhere to hand in this bunch of papers. Leaving there, instead of finding somewhere for lunch, I found a dusty old thrift shop that had floor to ceiling walls of books at the back! Paperbacks 50cents. I bought the first three Outlander books like that, and they had the rest in the same cover type, spine never cracked, unread.
I gulped my way through the first three, and have spent the next while aquiring the rest of the series. But they are mis-matched now, since I refuse to pay full price. I will eventually purchase them all in the same cover format. Being hooked into a Diana G novel is like say bye to your family for a while because even if you are in the same room, really your spirit is hanging with Claire and Jamie in the 18th century.

Oh, I so agree and understand about Diana Gabaldon's books! My family frequently had to put up with my recounting of what I was reading, as I HAD to share with someone! After I finished all of the books about Jamie and Clare, I despaired of being able to ever again enjoy reading a book so thoroughly!

I got my mother hooked. I stopped after A breath of snow and ashes, because it felt "finished" to me, and I want to move on a bit with my life for the next little while. Closer to the publication date of the new book due this year i will read Echo in the Bone...and then I will be sad. Have you read the Lord John books?

With some authors, I automatically buy the books out-right; like Stephen King. If an author is recommended to me or book; I read the initial book. If that book grabs me, then I pick up the rest of the series.

I have most of the Hercule Poirot from Agatha Christie; the Pine Deep series by Jonathan Maberry, as well as his Joe Ledger and Rot & Ruin series. The man can do no wrong. :)
