Katie (katiehodgkinson) I was just thinking, does anyone or has anyone ever picked up a book purely for the cover or on the contrary not picked up a book because of the cover. I can say I personally love book covers and a bad book cover instantly puts me off a book unless I've heard great recommendations for it generally.

For example I'm currently reading this version of Delirium

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Which I think is hideous and I know I wouldn't have picked up this copy had I seen it anywhere if I hadn't been told many good things about this book.

What are your thoughts?

Trisha | 30284 comments LOL! book covers are such funny things... because I like that book cover a lot better than Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver which is the one I read.

I picked up Carnival of Souls by Melissa Marr for the cover alone - I don't know what it is but it intrigues me!

I also loved Monument 14 (Monument 14 #1) by Emmy Laybourne because it just....I don't know...says so much through the cover

I also REALLY want to read Obsidian (Lux, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout based on the cover alone!! I don't even know what it's about, honestly! I just LOVE the cover. But, none of the book stores or libraries around me have it. I might have to bite the bullet and buy it online.

:) I'm a total cover snob. A cover can make or break whether I'm interested in a book!!

Good thing I also read my friends' reviews so I can know about good book that don't have pretty covers! LOL

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I usually never buy a book solely because of its cover. I mean I love covers a lot and sometimes while in the book store I notice the book because of the beautiful or intriguing cover. If I like the cover I'm not just like- " Ooh! I like this cover, so I'm going to buy it!" If I like the cover, I will then read the synopsis and see if it sounds good. If it sounds good then I will buy it! But I will admit, if the book has a awesome cover I will usually buy it. (if the synopsis sounds good as well!)

message 4: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) Trisha: Aha, see I love the cover you read of Delirium xD I don't think either cover depicts anything about the story though. I think that's originally why I wanted to read it because of the cover you read. Cover snobs together, it makes or breaks it with me too - I hate it when I can't get a certain version.

Jacquelyn: Oh of course, I don't just pick up the book and buy it straight off if it has a nice cover - it just wills me to pick it up in comparison to one with a less aesthetically pleasing cover. In the end I'll decide on the synopsis or if I've read reviews on it!

message 5: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments Interesting topic. I am not ashamed to admit that I have bought most of my books based on the cover XD Who can resist pretty cover?

I rarely read books with boring cover, unless people I truly trust with their taste in books recommend me :)

Such as Slammed (Slammed, #1) by Colleen Hoover ... the cover is boring (in my opinion) but a few people here said I had to read it and I did... It blew my mind :)

message 6: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) I got this version of Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver because it matches the second one.

I picked this book because of the cover. Kissed by an Angel (Kissed by an Angel, #1-3) by Elizabeth Chandler

Yes, I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to matching books. I got
Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant & Hunger (Gone, #2) by Michael Grant not realising they were different and the spines look slightly different and it's really bugging me! But that last cover art is beautiful *__*

message 8: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) I prefer that cover than the other version. it was simple but beautiful.

I wasn't able to notice book publishers. I bought City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare with different publisher (though the content is the same.. the size of texts and the book size itself are not the same with my City of Ashes- City of Lost Souls)

I know! I thought the same! Hate the cover.. Loved the book!
And
The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay !! Best book.. Not so great cover!

message 10: by Jojobean (new)

Jojobean | 553 comments I usually pick a book to buy based on the summary of the book. If it sounds interesting to me then I'll get it regardless of the cover. I have read awesome books with ugly covers before. However its always a plus when the I think the book summary is interesting and the cover is beautiful too- but for me its not necessary

message 16: by ladyofluxe (new)

ladyofluxe | 21 comments I also love Belles by Jen Calonita and The Magnolia League by Katie Crouch! I am such a sucker for drama-filled teenage life books! You should totally check them out. And the covers are beautiful.

I don't necessarily only read books with pretty covers but I try and find (if I can) a version of the book with a good cover :) I love the 'What's Left Of Me' Cover, that's gorgeous! I want it now just for the cover alone, ha!

message 22: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Although, it is disappointing when I see a book with a beautiful cover and the summary doesn't interest me.

Tayla Potayta (taylapotayta) | 1594 comments Have you ever done the opposite? I'm looking through my recommended books and I just don't even want to read what it's about cuz the cover looks so boring

message 26: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Tayla, you & I have that in common. I'm a total cover snob! Lol

LOL! Yes!! isn't that horrible!!! :) I love a pretty cover!!

message 28: by Psylk (new)

Psylk | 184 comments Honestly, I almost always pick up or don't pick up a book because of the cover. I totally judge every book by its cover. If the cover doesn't draw me in I usually wont pick it up to read the synopsis. I mean the synopsis will decide if I read it or buy it but the cover is what gets me to read the synopsis. Also I tend to overlook boring titles as well. The only time I read a book that I didn't judge the cover is when it was a recommendation from someone.

message 29: by Tiffanie (new)

Tiffanie Matteson (tiffmatteson) honestly..unless I hear or see really good reviews about it ...most if the time I do judge a book by its cover lol

Same here.. I believe if an author has great imagination and believe he did a pretty good job writing his story, he wouldn't let his cover ruin the story at all..

I just finished reading this one and I really love everything about it, especially the dress she's wearing in the cover The Selection (The Selection, #1) by Kiera Cass

message 31: by Mehsi (new)

Mehsi I pick up books based on covers, though not that alone, I also check reviews and such. Even with books I want, I go for the edition with the prettiest cover. Thank lord for having many editions with different covers.
I have some books with beautiful covers and most of them also have good stories.

message 32: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Yes, I always go for the prettiest cover edition! I think we all do! lol! I just got this book on Sunday and I absolutely love the cover! (my favorite cover on my bookshelf.) It's Tiger's Curse (The Tiger Saga, #1) by Colleen Houck . It's much prettier in real life.

message 33: by Doruntina (last edited Nov 30, 2012 05:49AM) (new)

Doruntina | 55 comments I know what they say but i will not look twice at a book even if its really great if that book next to another with a beautiful cover, even if it's not as good as the first. We all do it and cant help it. I started reading Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, #1) by Kiersten White cuz i liked the girl in the cover :)

message 34: by Trip (last edited Nov 30, 2012 01:53PM) (new)

Trip (shardsofromance) I wish I didn't but I choose so many books just for there covers and if a book has a terrible cover im much less likely to even look at it, no matter how great it may be.
This one for example I love the cover and title: The Catastrophic History of You and Me by Jess Rothenberg

message 35: by Chelsie (new)

Chelsie (thebookwormgirl23) I LOVE this cover Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1) by Kami Garcia

I love how loopy and amazing the script is. :D

message 36: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I was just thinking that yesterday! That's the reason I like it as well: because of the print.

I LOVE this cover, I think covers that are based on typography draw me in the most!
