Tana (tana_t) So I get that waiting an entire year for the next book is maddening if you've been left with a cliffhanger... but what if it's a reasonable amount of time? Say 1-3 months for the next book. Hate them? Love them? Don't mind them?

I really dont mind them if its only a short time until the next one but if its more than 4 months im like "NOO.. HURRRY UP AND TELL ME!!!" :)

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 611 comments I hate them! Doesn't matter to me how long I'll be waiting for the next book, I still hate them! They're a great tool for getting you to read the next chapter, and the next, and so on, but when they're used at the end of a book I find it annoying. I mean, I know you want to have people eager to read the next book in the series and all that, but I like things to have a decent ending. Leave a question or two unanswered, but give me a decent ending, that's what I say.

message 4: by Tana (new)

Tana (tana_t) I am so with you Victoria, I hate them also, I've actually stopped reading a couple of series because of cliffhangers.

message 5: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 71 comments It's even worse when that 'cliffhanger ending' actually turns out to be because the last few pages have fallen out.

message 6: by Tana (new)

Tana (tana_t) lol Micheal.

I hate that when pages are missing thank god for ebooks now!

message 7: by Reem (new)

Reem Eid (reemeid) | 6 comments I don't mind if the sequel is already out!:P Or available anyway. But it can be quite frustrating if the book is nowhere to be found.

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 611 comments Yeah, Michael, missing pages would make it even worse, LOL!

Haha yeah I mean if you know its out there, you can try to get it and read it as soon as you finished the book :) haha

i usually love a cliffhanger, it keeps me psyched and raring for the next

this is also sometimes the way when a book leaves you wondering and sometimes needing you to read it again, as then sometimes you'll finally understand some of them really interesting characters that were partly mystery, one time a book completely finished, letting you think what the characters did after they had finished what they had been through.

message 11: by Madhavi (new)

Madhavi (madhavij) | 19 comments It is the long wait that I hate. So I hate cliffhangers.
I usually love to read all the series in one go.. rather than wait patiently for the next book.

The only exceptions so far have been
1. Jeffery Archer's Clifton Chronicles
2. Harry Potter 7th book.

message 12: by Jeshu (new)

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I hate cliffhangers at the end of books because it seems as a cheap trick to lure the reader into buying the next volume AND, since it's so overused in today's literature, I feel like the author doesn't really know how to give a proper closure to the current adventure, and cliffhangers are the easy way out :P

lol@michael's comment! the missing pages at the end were common for me when i took books from the high school library... i hated it!

message 13: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Deckert | 4 comments I'm not a fan of cliffhangers. I want that sense of completion when I reach the end of the story. A few unresolved loose ends that can show up in the next book are okay, but the main story should be tied up in a neat bow. Of course, one of my favorite genres is mystery, and if the mystery were left unsolved, I'd be livid.

The old technique where story is completely wrapped up, and then the phone rings and someone wants the main character to fly to Timbuktu immediately to start the next adventure can be cute.

I don't mind cliffhangers but I agree with Jeshu, they seem to be overused at the moment as a tactic to string out a series and guarantee sales. I particularly dislike it when I've waited patiently for the next instalment of a series only to find the book is mainly 'filler', the plot hasn't progressed and it ends with another cliffhanger!

They can be great but it can be hard to meet readers expectations when they've been waiting a year for the next book and imagining all the different directions the story could go in. It must be easy to disappoint when the hypes been built up that much.

message 15: by Sandy (new)

Sandy sometimes they really work, but don't like them if just trying to prolong a tired theme

message 16: by Jess (new)

Jess Mountifield | 32 comments I used to really hate them but now I'm not so sure. As a write I've found in my series that they just keep happening. I don't deliberately put them in there but that's the best place to end one book and leave the rest for another. Admittedly I don't think that will be a problem with the end of a series so I suppose that's not so bad but it's softened my judgement of other writers. Now I know that sometimes that's just the best order to have the story in and the book has to end somewhere.

message 17: by Fran (new)

Fran Clark (franclarkauthor) | 6 comments Cliffhangers are all well and good if you've a sound book that has everything going for it. But I think that if you have written a series and left a cliffhanger at the end of the series your fans might feel cheated. I know I would if I invested a lot of my time. I want you to tell what happens, not leave me high and dry!

message 18: by Abby (new)

Abby | 1 comments Ha! I just finished Eden and this was definitely one of the biggest cliffhangers I have ever read. But when I think about it. The story was going that way as every chapter ended up with mini-cliffhangers. Which in turn kept me reading wanting to know what was going to happen next. I loved it.

message 19: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 8 comments I have a love/hate relationship with cliffhangers. On the one hand I love them because they make me think, 'Oh my God I cannot WAIT to find out what happens,' but then I have to wait...

I prefer it when the cliffhangers happen at the end of chapters because if they happen at the end of the book I feel cheated. However, I do like it when the main story of the book is wrapped up but there's a hint of something else to come. Just a little something to keep the imagination and anticipation going.

message 20: by LaSonya (new)

LaSonya I love cliffhangers if there's a sequel and I can just go right into the next book!~

message 21: by Tovah (new)

Tovah (Tlock4242) | 8 comments I love cliffhangers... unless there isn't another book, in which case I generally decide that I hate the ending.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I think cliffhangers are great if it's a series and the next book is readily available. I HATE them if the book takes years to come out or are in a standalone novel.

message 23: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) My answer? YUK!
I have read too many books recently that end with not even the vaguest sense of conclusion because they are part of the series.
I don't mind so much if it happens in the second book, by then I have already committed to a series but in a first book I may decide not to continue for many reasons and to be left dangling makes me feel the book has been a total waste of time and certainly doesn't endear the author to me. (ie I may decide never to try the author again)

message 24: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 7 comments I don't normally care much for them. i think a book should be complete even if it is in a series.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Sometimes cliffhangers really bug me. I hate having unanswered questions at the end of a book. However I have read books where there is no real ending but its been left open to interpretation and I don't mind that because I can make up my own ending.
