Kate M. | 3 comments I enjoy monster books and am looking for new ones. I don't like zombie books (unless it's fake zombie book (virus that affects brain etc)), not looking for a vampire book, not looking for a ghost book.

Monster books that I've enjoyed are:
Watchers
Phantoms
Frankenstein
The Remaining
Pretty much all Crichton books: Jurassic Park, Prey, Congo

That's what I can think of right now...

Ideas?

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments Have you tried Dean Koontz's take on Frankenstein? It's a series beginning with Prodigal Son. I thought it was pretty good.

You might like David Maine's Monster, 1959 - it's a cross between gozilla and king kong, written as a screen play. I really liked it!

Michelle Jones | 3 comments I really liked Relic (Pendergast, #1) by Douglas Preston
It reminded me a lot of Jurassic Park.

Mattia Ravasi | 6 comments Always loved monsters :) yet I realized I can give you pretty little help! I've seen a ton of monster movies but read a very few books about 'em after my 12th year of age (before that, Goosebumps were the rage :) )

That said, the most ambitious monsters book that comes to my mind is Stephen King's It. It's a huge novel and "ambitious" doesn't necessarily mean "perfect", but overall it deserves the time it takes to be read ;)!
Oh and of course, if you've never read him you have to check HP Lovecraft. All his fiction (ok, let's say most of it) still reads incredibly well - and he's one of the most influential horror authors, like, ever.
The Call of Chtulhu, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Whisperer in Darkness are all excellent short stories, all masterpieces; if you wish to begin with something extremely quick, Dagon may be a good pick - it's only a few pages long - whereas, if you wish for something longer, you can check At the Mountains of Madness, a novel(la?).
You can find all these texts for free here:

(and of course in a gazillion other places)

And by the way, thanks to the others for the suggestions - I may check those too ^^!

I agree - good series.

BirdiesBookshelves It's not exactly a monster book but The Ruins seriously freaked me out. Definitely not your normal horror novel. I would highly recommend it!
