message 1: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) I am squeezing in a few reads from my local library's adult winter reading program (), including two of my currently-reading shelf books:

Lost Moon The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13 by Jim Lovell and The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Waiting in the wings are:

Stiff The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach and Kansas City Noir by Steve Paul

Then it's back to my 'normal' reading including:

Knife of Dreams (Wheel of Time, #11) by Robert Jordan Transformation (Rai-Kirah, #1) by Carol Berg Storm from the Shadows (Honorverse Talbot #2) by David Weber

If I can squeeze a couple more in, I would like to read:
Hounded (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne and Shadow's Edge (Night Angel, #2) by Brent Weeks

message 2: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) | 1217 comments Somehow I got diverted this week into reading Three Men in a Boat: To Say Nothing of the Dog

I need to get back to The Quantum Thief. I finished the first chapter and then got distracted by other things.

After that, who knows. :)

message 4: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 213 comments Fantasy and Science Fiction wise I'll be reading The Great Book of Amber (Chronicles of Amber, #1-10) by Roger Zelazny The Great Book of Amber! I'd also like to read The Iron King (The Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa The Iron King and Blood Song (Blood Singer, #1) by Cat Adams Blood Song (when taking a break from Amber). My out of genre read will be A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute A Town Like Alice.

message 5: by Candiss (new)

Candiss (tantara) | 1207 comments You beat me to posting this thread, Jon! I usually post it as the last thing I do when I've got the first-of-the-month mod duties, and I had Real Life stuff to do this morning so got a late start on group posting. :)

I've just started our SF BotM - The Quantum Thief (The Quantum Thief Trilogy #1) by Hannu Rajaniemi . Next in my queue for the month are:

A Far Cry from Kensington by Muriel Spark China Mountain Zhang by Maureen F. McHugh Before I Go To Sleep by S.J. Watson Gun Machine by Warren Ellis Several Perceptions by Angela Carter

I really got a kick of of Three Men in a Boat! If you haven't read it yet, you MUST follow up with Connie Willis's To Say Nothing of the Dog... :)

I'm about halfway through Transformation for our fantasy BOTM.

I am reading Mission of Honor, to be followed by Knife of Dreams. Then I think it will be back to the Honorverse but I'd love to squeeze Transformation in for this month's discussion.

message 8: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1411 comments I finished A Memory of Light, the final WOT book. I am not sure what to think. Parts of the story were quite brilliant, Rand's story was quite satisfactory. It was the rest that I really didn't fall in love with. Guess my feeling is that is was too busy

Still no Battle at the bookstore...so I started in on some Roman history. Reading Augustus: The Life of Rome's First Emperor

message 9: by David (new)

David Lawson | 10 comments I'm hoping to catch up with some of the prior books of the month starting with Chronicles of the Black Company and possibly moving onto Fight Club (I know it's really not fantasy/sci-fi, but I was one of the many guys that loved the movie with a weird cult like fanaticism). I'm also trying to continue reading some of the Brother's Grimm Fairy tales occasionally.

Unfortunately though, Spring terms started and most professors don't really approve of reading in class (especially fantasy), so I'm hoping for the best but planning for the worst at this point.

message 10: by Paul (new)

Paul I'm in the middle of the Wool omnibus by Hugh Howey. I find the worldbuilding interesting and the story an interesting take on the police procedural/detective novel. I think Howey takes some interesting turns with the viewpoint characters. I compared John Scalzi to Heinlein when I read his books and I somewhat compare Howey to Asimov primarily because it's a mystery wrapped in SF worldbuilding ideas.

message 11: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) Sorry Candiss. I had my post sitting in my clipboard and didn't want to lose it by accident.

No problem, Jon! I wasn't trying to scold. :)

I read the book last month, and enjoyed it very much. I also liked the detective/mystery approach, and I think you're spot on with your comparison to Asimov. I'm less sure about the "omnibus" element; it reads as a complete work, and I'm hard pressed to imagine any portion standing on its own.

message 14: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1141 comments I finished Altered Carbon yesterday FINALLY. Here's my review. I didn't like it much. Am starting Speaks the Nightbird as it was on sale at Audible for 4.95. I'm also rereading Janny Wurts Wars of Light and Shadow and am starting Traitor's Knot. This time through have been able to read slowly and see things I haven't seen before, because I'm not so caught up in finding out what happens next. Finished Peril's Gate yesterday and am astounded the way the story still wrings the emotion out of me.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 82 comments Been very busy, but I'm starting Janny's Curse of the Mistwraiths, #1 of The Wars of Light and Shadow. I have been waiting for the right timing, and as my next group read pick isn't until April....this looks like it.
:)

Yay! Stick with it. It's not light reading. :)

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 82 comments This, I know Sandra!
;)
Started it once before and loved the story, as far as I got.
I only stopped so I could join a group read of Janny's "To Ride Hell's Chasm". Finally......I am returned.

Oh good. Well, better start over, :)

message 20: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 415 comments Finishing up A Memory of Light (and studiously avoiding all spoilers! There are some very tempting threads on this site...). Working on The Shoemaker's Wife for my MIRL book club. Then it's on to finish Torch of Freedom for last month's group read (oops) and start this month's Mission of Honor (double oops).

message 21: by Nick (new)

Nick (doily) | 1001 comments On queue for this month I have
Tea with the Black Dragon (Black Dragon, #1) by R.A. MacAvoy The Blue Sword (Damar, #1) by Robin McKinley and The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway

Currently, in non-fiction, I'm reading Space Race The Epic Battle Between America and the Soviet Union for Dominion of Space by Deborah Cadbury

message 23: by Kristian (new)

Kristian | 2 comments I'm currently reading Soul of Serpents by Jonathan Moeller and I'll most likely continue with this series and read Soul of Dragons (Demonsouled) by Jonathan Moeller next. After that I'm not sure what I'll start reading.

I loved the Blue Sword, my copy is old and smelly, perhaps I should have a new one.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 82 comments Ah...yes! The Blue Sword.
*sigh*
My copy is in 4 pieces. One of these days it will be replaced.
Love the cover...so I'll want the same edition.

I finished Transformation last night, and just in time got The Ask and the Answer available on digital loan, so that's up next to start tonight :)

message 29: by Helen (new)

Helen I read the Ask and the Answer last year, I enjoyed the trilogy.

I finished The Ask and the Answer in two days, thanks to being snowed in, and loved it :) I'm taking a sick day today and had a bunch of time to read this morning, finished The Night Circus, which I thought was gorgeously written.

Now I'm about to start Revelation. Yay!

message 32: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1411 comments Finished up Augustus, the book was ok. Started out strong but when Augustus became Augustus the book fell down.

Started on Battle: The House War: Book Five

Shel (shel99) | 3073 comments Mod
I finished Revelation yesterday, and liked it well enough that I'm going to continue with the third book, but I didn't think it was nearly as good as Transformation.

My digital loan for Monsters of Men came through, so I started that last night. I'm glad I was able to get it soon after The Ask and the Answer, because it picks up RIGHT where we left off, so I'm glad it was fresh in my memory.

I'm reading Revelation now. I'm liking it a lot, but I find I'm reading it very slowly.
