Shirley | 4177 comments Just realised it's the 20th, and time to nominate our August Group Fiction Read...sorry it's so late in the day, but I will make sure nominations are closed late in the day, and the poll too! As Heather explained things so well last month, I've copied it below:

This thread is for nominations for our group fiction read in August 2015.

Nominations will be run for 5 days and will close on June 25th.

During this time anybody can either nominate or second a book. The 6 books with the most second votes at the end of the 5 day nomination period will go into the poll. Each person can either nominate one book or second one book. There are no limits to the number of seconds a book can receive.

The poll will then run until the 30th June and the winner will be announced the following day. This will leave a month for people to get hold of the book in preparation for the read.

Please only nominate, second or vote for a book you will read with the group if it should win. Please also check that your chosen nomination hasn't been a group read in the past. You can do this by looking at the group bookshelf, contact one of the moderators or post on 'Ask the Moderators' thread

If you have any questions on the nominations process please contact me, use the 'Ask the Moderators' thread or post on here and we will be happy to help.

Diane S ☔ I'd like to, nominate Brick Lane

message 4: by Chrissie (last edited Jun 20, 2015 10:11PM) (new)

Chrissie I'd like to nominate The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I am being adventurous. Clearly a good book for discussion.

What am I doing nominating a book that is dystopian? Well, let's call it social commentary.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

I will second The Handmaids Tale. It's a good book to discuss and I think I would read it again

Haha, I love your nomination Chrissie!

Shirley | 4177 comments I will third The Handmaid's Tale!!

message 8: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Jeez, you guys.... I thought at one point I would go back and either delete the message or cross it all out. Then I changed my mind AGAIN. I simply have to try it and I would like to read it with others.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Your nomination has stuck. Chrissie. I really hope you like it

message 10: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Nice. It is due to the help from all of you! I plan on reading The Blind Assassin first and then hopefully continuing with the Handmaid's Tale.

message 11: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (cathiebp2) | 653 comments I fourth The Handmaid's Tale. I read this a few months ago...this will be interesting dialogue.

Chrissie, I have The Blind Assassin for next year. One Atwood read a year for me is enough!

I will second this.

message 13: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 543 comments I'd like to nominate The Fishermen.

I'd totally reread The Handmaid's Tale. I haven't read it since high school and I loved it.

message 14: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Chinook, :0)

Wow! Sandy..... what exactly were you trying to say? As we say in the US,"huh?"

message 17: by Billy "D" (new)

Billy "D" I will second this. New Jersey in the script works for me. Thanks, Pink

Yes, if there are more than six seconded books, we'll take the first six to poll, but books receiving more than two nominations will take precedence.

Suzanne (suzanne03) | 44 comments Diane S. wrote: "I'd like to, nominate Brick Lane"

I'd like to second Brick Lane. Having just read White Teeth by Zadie Smith, this would be an excellent sequel.

message 20: by Siewjye (new)

Siewjye Chow (ssjye) | 47 comments I nominate A Man Called Ove
and I second The Handmaid's Tale

message 21: by Betty (new)

Betty (bellemercier) | 23 comments A Handmaids Tale is also what I nominate! My daughter just told me I needed to read it :)

message 22: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Featherston (kfxston) | 66 comments I would like to nominate At the Water's Edge by Sara Gruen. (She is the author of Water for Elephants).

Since Handmaid's Tale has been seconded many times, I wondered if it's a bit silly for me to nominate another book. I can very much understand why Handmaid's Tale was nominated as I've read it twice myself and have seen the movie 3 times. Maybe when there are lots of seconds for a given book, there should be a cutoff number of seconds which makes the heavily-seconded book an automatic selection, after which folks need not do any more nominating.

message 23: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments ok - a quick summary - so far nominated...

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (seconded)
Brick Lane (seconded)
The Handmaid's Tale (seconded 4 times)
The Fishermen
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Would anyone like to nominate or second anything else? The nominations will close tomorrow night so that I can start the poll...

Hi Siewjye - we are going to read A Man Called Ove in July (it won the poll last month) but I have included your second.

message 25: by Gill (new)

Gill | 5719 comments I'll third Brick Lane.

Hi Kathryn - it's not silly at all (!)- the fact that The Handmaid's Tale has been seconded so many times only guarantees it goes through to the poll. It does not mean that it will win the poll - so people should feel free to continue to nominate and second books until the cut-off.

Is "At the Water's Edge" available in paperback yet?

message 27: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3318 comments I'll fourth Brick Lane.

Many have perhaps read this already, but I nominate Regeneration by Pat Barker, the first book in her world war I trilogy, the last of which won the Booker Prize.

message 33: by Billy "D" (new)

Billy "D" As a newbie,I can not comment. However, where do I begin?

message 34: by Billy "D" (new)

Billy "D" K message 30 is not from u Pink.

Bill wrote: "K message 30 is not from u Pink."

I'm confused Bill, what seems to be the problem?

message 36: by Greg (new)

Greg | 8313 comments Mod
Bill, it is totally fine to comment, whether newbie or not! I think there has been some confusion.

Sandy was originally asking about the nominating rules because we had changed them a while ago (the message 30 was in another thread in her link).

When you said "I will second this. New Jersey in the script works for me", what did you mean? Which book are you seconding?

message 37: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I'll be closing the nominations tonight.

I'm going to withdraw my second of The Handmaid's Tale and second The Angel's Game, which I'd love to read.

That means we have the following five to take to poll

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
Brick Lane
The Handmaid's Tale
Regeneration
The Angel`s Game

If anyone wants to jump in quickand second one of the others, At the Water's Edge, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer or The Fishermen then now's your chance!

message 38: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments @Greg I think Bill was seconding 'Oscar Wao' but I could be wrong...

message 39: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments ok, nominations are now closed!

message 40: by Billy "D" (new)

Billy "D" I am sorry to all. I was confused but now am "all good." My fault.
