What we're listening to

EXACTLY!!! Traveling has been a less stressful experience for me this year, for the reasons Hj expressed so well. Thanks 8)

I did, and yes, he likes it here, I think :)
It was part of the same tour, but he always changes the set from concert to concer, so it was a different experience. Also because this was indoors, while last summer was outdoors. That would have been too cold now. . To tell the truth, I would probably not have gone this time if I hadn't been asked if I would like to go with my sister and her family yesterday. And I don't regret it! :)

Sssh, it's a secret..

Wow, great! I love Springsteen, but I don't bear big concerts anymore, so I doubt that I'll ever see him live.

Meanwhile I have been listening to Richard Blanco on . I particularly recommend 'Looking for the Gulf Motel' from this set.

There are a bunch of new M/M Audible books:
Calico, A Foreign Range, Something Like Summer, An Unsettled Range, Shades of Gray, Body and Blood, His Name Is John, and The Butcher's Son have all come out in the last month.

Interesting. You'll have to let us know what you think. Dorien seems to have used all different narrators -- none of them with previous experience. I'm wondering how that turned out.

OK, if I get those I will. Haven't read any Dorien Gray books yet, though I admire his nym. :-) Are they good?
I am far less picky about narrators than most - but it is a bit much when it sounds like they never read the book before narrating it. As sometimes happens with Dreamspinner.
I've been listening to Ian McKellen reading The Odyssey to help me fall asleep the past two nights. God, I love his voice! I just wish it had worked last night. First time an audio book failed to help me sleep. Probably due to all the sleeping err napping I did in the afternoon.
Now I'm contemplating getting a new audio book for my MP3 player for when I'm not at home since all my audio books are still on cassette. Of course I'm thinking of a Josh book, but picking one is really hard! My top two choices aren't available: GGB and ISOIS. Both short pieces with endings I absolutely love. Sigh.

Oh, gosh, his voice is all thunderous and vibrant. I truly love Sir Ian (well, he is Gandalf too and I am a huge Tolkien geek). *goes to look for the audiobook*

I love that reading! I need to re-listen to that recording. I splurged a credit on it recently. I gave away my cassette tapes.
And I just bought my cassettes online. Maybe I got your old ones? Lol. Since I have a cassette player in my bedroom and no extra speakers for other gadgets like my ancient portable CD player, I stick with cassettes for audio books. But then, i don't need many choices to help me fall asleep at home, which is primarily when I listen to books.
Chris Patton has finished the narrating of The Hell You Say, so I will hopefully soon get those files, approve them, and then we'll be on our way. I'm guessing June for a release date.
Meanwhile...still waiting for Strange Fortune to go live. I want you guys to hear that one! I feel like a little kid trying to show my Crayola drawing. :-D

Congrats! That's exciting. I get that "OMG I can't wait to show people" thing too. When I'm no being eaten alive by anxiety. (Sequels are worst. I think that's why I rarely write one. The fear of failure just gets an adrenaline shot when I'm trying to live up to the previous book...)

Well, the beauty of the audio is it's already lived or died. Now it's all on the narrator. :-D

Chris let me know yesterday he's finished narrating The Hell You Say. So now I have to listen to the files and make my notes, Chris will make the edits, I'll finish paying him, and then we'll be in the queue! So...The Hell You Say will probably be available for sale early June.

That's wonderful news, Josh. Another reason to look forward to the summer. :-)

Well, at least it sounded that way to me.

Just bought CUTYS as my first e-audio book to take with me on vacations. OMG. That narrator has such an amazing voice. It's like crack. And very soothing to listen to at the same time. Perfect for falling asleep to.

Really? I actually loved his Septimus. I think maybe he was going for an Alan Rickman approach? That's what it kind of reminded me of.
Well, voices are hard. Our reaction to them is very personal. All I can say is it was hard as hell to find ANYONE who could do an English accent. Let alone all the different accents and voices in that book! I kind of thought Max did a brilliant job.

I wasn't sure how that straightforward reading style narrative would work, but it's ended up being one of my favorite audio books.

Oh it's absolutely fantastic, Josh! Definitely a good choice I think. I'm wondering what other books he'd be good at reading aloud...

Maybe that was it. Because I thought he did such a wonderful job as Colin, with all the Gaelic and his Scottish accents were good. I just didn't imagine Septimus as Alan Rickman. I'd have to go back and be a little more open minded about it.
Gosh, I must be your most punctilious reader. Sorry. :(

Right, I thought that would be a problem.

I'm saving my credits for Strange Fortune and The Hell You Say, and looking forward to them.

You never want to say that to a writer. ;-)
But seriously, this sounds so wonderful I'm thinking of getting it, then figuring out later how I'll listen to it.

We'll help you to figure it out. Really, you should give it a try, K.Z. I've been listening to CUTYS for several times already and I've only had it for a few weeks. You'll enjoy it, but... after that you'll probably have to buy all the other audio books, too! Every one of the narrators Josh has chosen are perfect for the book/series they narrate and every one of them are still very different from each other. One of my favorites is Kevin R. Free narrating Holmes & Moriarity series. And then you'll just have to listen to Chris Patton's Adrien and Jake!!! They are great. The Darkling Thrush was my first Josh Lanyon audio book and I thought that Max Miller did a wonderful job with all the various characters and voices. :-)

Audio format brings a new dimension to a book that you already love dearly. How can you possibly resist buying them?! It's only a matter of time, Anne... ;-)

Vivian - I listened to a couple more hours of The Darkling Thrush overnight, and I can now glimpse what you meant about the Septimus voice. I don't hear a lisp at all, but he does sound rather old. Because it's one of the few books by Josh which I hadn't read before (I avoid fantasy) I don't know yet how old Septimus actually is, and to me he sounded like a rather precise older man. I suppose that the preciseness is meant to convey the nature of his job, but I am beginning to wonder just how old he actually is!
The rest of the voices are excellent, particularly Colin.

Will we resist to the pressure?
What helped me decide was listening to the audio clip on Amazon. Just to get a sense of the narrators voice.
I haven't listened to the others but I'm curios about AE.
The thing with me is that I will put on an audio book and then find out I haven't been paying attention because my brain had something else it wanted to think about. When I used to drive I needed music I could sing to, to keep me awake. I needed interactive. So for me, audio books simply help me sleep.
OTOH, when I started CUTYS the other night I couldn't help but be entranced! I had to force myself to put it down so I could get other things done!

I do love CUTYS. It's my very favorite of Josh's stories. But buying all the audio books? O.O I could hear my bank account screaming from eight miles away! :)

Let me be a Luddite once more and repeat: I hate Facebook! :P

Doesn't it make such a difference to the driving when you can listen to a good book? I positively look forward to long journeys now. And when one is away from home, listening to an old favourite like CUTYS is very comforting, isn't it? Makes the hotel rooms feel more welcoming.
