Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 136 comments After a thrilling overtime period in which 1984 prevailed over The Wheel of Time (thanks to the extra voters!!), we finally have our FINAL 4! I have the match-ups in a SurveyMonkey survey, for this round there is only 1 survey.
Be sure to get your votes in as the stakes get bigger every round:

The actual bracket can be found here
for your reference and to check the scores of previous rounds.

The FINAL 4 ends at Midnight CST on Thursday April 12.

Looks like we'll have a SF vs. Fantasy showdown for the final!!

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments How do you choose between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings? Lord of the Rings is in my view the superior work - it's bigger and better (more the story Tolkien wanted to write) but The Hobbit has some shapeshifters, eagles and loads of armies (oh and nostalgia behind it). The sci-fi versus sci-fi (or dystopian versus dystopian) seems a little easier to work out for me - still difficult!

Personally, I think The Hobbit is a much cleaner and clearer narrative with a more specific tone that never falters. The Lord of the Rings and I'm nitpicking here, gets unwieldy at times, overloaded in its history and minutiae. And for myself, a question I always have is, if Sauron and the orcs and the like, conquered the world, what would they do with it?

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 136 comments While I love The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit is one of my favorite stand-alone novels of all time, so this choice was an easy one for me.

Krister Jones (krister_jones) | 8 comments The Hobbit every time! As Stefan said, as a stand alone fantasy novel it's pretty hard to beat. Plus it's one of the first fantasy books I ever read so it gets bonus points for sentimental value...

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 136 comments Yep, my dad read it to me when I was about 5.

Stef | 56 comments The Hobbit is special, adventure with a lot of humor, and a bit of philosophy. I agree it is a book for children and from childhood, as Jonathan said: nostalgia.

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 136 comments Still a couple of hours left to get those votes in!

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 525 comments I love The Hobbit but for me it's too simplistic when compared to The Lord of the Rings. Though I love both books...
