Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments Not sure if this will be possible, but I'll try. :-)

So far:
1. The End by Lemony Snicket

Danine (dulcemea) We are all trying for 50 :) Good luck!

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 2. I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith

message 5: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments I just realized that I ought to say what I thought of those two books. The End was the least entertaining of ths series. But I must hand it to Lemony for ending it in a completely unexpected way. Overall I thought it was a decent end to a spectacular series.

I really enjoyed I Capture the Castle. I had already seen the movie, so I don't know how that influenced my liking of it, but I do truthfully think it was a lovely book.

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 3. Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

I enjoyed this one. More different than the movie than I was expecting. I felt that it was very deep and moving for a children's book. I found it even slightly disturbing! But overall, I thought it was a great book.

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 4. The First Man-Made Man by Pagan Kennedy

I read this for a class on human sexuality. A very interesting book! Really opened my eyes to a whole group of people I had never really thought about before.

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 5. A House Divided by Paul Abramson

Amsolutely amazing. Read it in 1 day, in 2.5 hours.

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 6. Sarah by Paul Abramson

I read this one, as well as my last 2 books, for class. Disturbing and sad, but so interesting. Read in about a day and a half.

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 7. Being There by Jerzy Kosinski

I absolutely loved this book. I read it in one day (yesterday), so a quick read.

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 8. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

I liked it, but I didn't feel that it really compared to "East of Eden."

9. Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier

Loved this book! I had already seen the movie and I loved that also. The one problem I had was with the "trying to sound old-fashioned"-writing in places, but I loved the story and got through it very quickly.

Wow, only book 9! Well, it's summer, so maybe I'll catch up...

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 10. A Murder is Announced by Agatha Christie

I had read the play a long time ago and vaguely remembered the ending, so...probably not a good idea to read the book and hope to be surprised! Anyway, it was an enjoyable read.

11. The Lover by Marguerite Duras

What a bizarre book. But with the most amazing ending ever.

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 12. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Absolutely brilliant. I loved everything about this novel. It captivated me, moved me, and proved to me that science fiction can be fantastic!

message 14: by KrisT (new)

KrisT I loved that book too. I was really surprised by how much I liked it. I have gone on to read a couple more in that series but really that one is my favorite so far. It was just so creatively written I felt. :)

message 15: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments KrisT,
I felt the same way! I had avoided reading it because I didn't think I'd like it very much. So many people have suggested Ender's Shadow also, do you think it's worth reading?

13. The Last of Cheri by Colette

Terribly boring. I really liked "Cheri," but couldn't get into this one. I felt like absolutely nothing happened. Oh well.

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 14. Walk Across the Sea by Susan Fletcher

My best friend's little sister was reading this and suggested we both read it, so we did. I thought it was surprisingly good and enjoyable!

15. Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Wow. Weird, creepy, interesting, and a just plain great read!

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments 16. Between the Acts by Virginia Woolf

The first of hers that I've read! I actually really enjoyed it, even though it didn't really have a climactic moment or anything.

17. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

So so sad. Really sad. Very well written, but any book where dogs get killed...I just have trouble getting through.

18. Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach

Read it in about an hour and really enjoyed it! It had lots of interesting ideas about life which I really liked reading about. There were so many ideas, though, and at at times I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to take away from it.

Ed (ejhahn) | 235 comments Re" JLS. You take away whatever has meaning for you. Some people laughed at the story. They are the losers.

BTW, If you can find it, the Album by Neal Simon is wonderful.

RE: Of Mice and Men. The tragedy isn't the dog being killed. It's the way that people like Lenny are treated and the inability of some people to foresee what the result of their actions will be right unto death.

Steinbeck rules!

message 19: by Gemma (new)

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments Yes, I agree, Steinbeck totally rules!!

19. Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

My friend had been trying to get me to read this for a while, so I went ahead and read it. I enjoyed it, but it didn't really make a huge impact on me. It was just a "sweet" story, for me.

20. Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne

I needed to read something comforting, so I did! What a lovely book. Because it was a children's book, it had such a simplistic quality and was just so sweet and honest.

Gemma (gemmatoes) | 19 comments My final post about 2008:

21. Identity by Milan Kundera

Now one of my favorite books of all time and one of my favorite authors of all time. I thought I he couldn't have written anything better than "the unbearable lightness of being," but I was proven wrong!! I just couldn't stop sighing after I finished it. :-)
