Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments I normally don't cast too much when I read but I keep picturing Lucy Liu as Juliette. What about you guys?

Emerson | 1 comments Deputy Marnes = Sam Elliot

Charlie Parry (cparry) | 3 comments I totally agree with the Sam Elliot choice - every line I read by Marnes I saw him delivering it.

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments That is excellent.

message 5: by Rik (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rik | 777 comments Don't know if you guys are aware of this but Ridley Scott has optioned the rights to Wool for a movie. Now that doesn't mean it will be made as many books get optioned and never see film but it does make me happy that if it does see the big screen that a big time director like Scott will be behind it.

Gregory (gfitzgeraldmd) | 51 comments I kept picturing Rashida Jones for Juliette.

artofstu | 139 comments Gregory wrote: "I kept picturing Rashida Jones for Juliette."

From Parks and Rec? Lol. Juliette is a strong, action hero type. Jones is the romantic comedy type.

artofstu | 139 comments I like the general look of Sam Elliot for Marnes. But Elliot has a very tough presence, and Marnes is ultimately a weak character (maybe).

Here are my picks:

Holston - Viggo Mortensen
Marnes - Jon Voight
Jahns - Helen Mirren
Juliette - Diane Kruger
Bernard - Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Lukas - James Mcavoy
Knox - Ron Perlman
Walker - Ian McKellan
Solo - Leo Dicaprio
Shirly - Amy Acker

It's maybe a bit too star-studded to be realistic, but hey, it's a fantasy casting.

Kathryn Weis | 126 comments Dara wrote: "I normally don't cast too much when I read but I keep picturing Lucy Liu as Juliette. What about you guys?"

She's exactly who I pictured when I read Wool.

artofstu | 139 comments The book doesn't really offer a detailed description of Juliette, but it does say she has "bright eyes". Lucy has what I would call dark eyes. Not that that matters much; I mean, book descriptions have very little to do with actual movie casting.

But I'm always amazed at how people ignore descriptions of characters in books when they imagine them. I was surprised at how much backlash there was from the casting of Rue in The Hunger Games. The actress perfectly fit the description in the book, but some people thought she was supposed to look different.

Kathryn Weis | 126 comments Stuart wrote: "The book doesn't really offer a detailed description of Juliette, but it does say she has "bright eyes". Lucy has what I would call dark eyes. Not that that matters much; I mean, book descriptions ..."

I didn't take bright eyes to mean light in color but more of a sparkle/personality/look in the eye.

artofstu | 139 comments So, because I was curious, I asked Hugh Howey about his preferred Juliette casting on Twitter:

I would be totally psyched about the first two choices. I absolutely love Evangeline Lily. Can't wait to see her in The Hobbit.

That's what I took it for as well. The other descriptor I remember is brown hair in a braid.

I really don't know why I pictured Liu. It just stuck.

Tim | 380 comments Noomi Rapace would be awesome :)

Tim | 380 comments Sean Bean should play Holsten - (view spoiler)

artofstu | 139 comments Dara wrote: "I really don't know why I pictured Liu. It just stuck."

Well, I think the skin color would be correct maybe. The book does say that she has a dark complexion, but that Jahns thought it might be as much from grease and grime as anything else.

@Tim please put your comment about Holston in spoiler tags.

Kathryn Weis | 126 comments Tim wrote: "Sean Bean should play Holsten - [spoilers removed]"

That's mean. :-P But so true... :'( I love Sean Bean... but I'd love to for once see him LIVE through an entire movie...

James Almond | 20 comments If Sean Bean survived a film it's probably mean the end of the world as we know it.

You are cruel. :'(

message 22: by Nathan (last edited May 09, 2013 01:55PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nathan (tenebrous) | 377 comments My most brillant pick was Maggie Smith (on Downton Abby - the dowager countess of Downton, Prof. McGonagall in the Harry potter films) for McLain, the Head of Supply. As a party game, I think you could cast all of Wool from the .

On another note:

I imagained Zach Galifianakis as Solo.

Perhaps it was the Man-boy with the beard thing.

Charlise Theron was who I pictured for Julie.

So, Maggie Smith, who is nearly 80, as the gun-totting, hard-as-nails, McLain, who (view spoiler). That's what you envision for DAME Maggie? Disgraceful! ;)

message 24: by Ty (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ty Wilson (ShatterStar66) | 165 comments Lots of good suggestions here. Some I really like and some not so much. I'm not going to cast the whole thing, but here are a few of my picks.

I think Charlize Theron could play Juliette in her sleep. She's played that type of character many times before. I'd probably go a little more outside the box and cast either Morena Baccarin or Moon Bloodgood there.

I love the idea of Ron Perlman as Knox. Perlman just makes almost everything he's in better.

For Bernard I'd pick Gary Oldman or Robert Carlyle. Both would be good there.

Lastly, I think for McLain, I might go with Pam Grier. I think she'd bring something interesting to the mix.

artofstu | 139 comments I like the idea of Pam Grier as McLain.

message 26: by Dara (new) - rated it 3 stars

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments Galifiniakis is a good pick for Solo. I pictured Bernard as the guy who played Bernard on Lost. I wonder where that came from!

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments Man-boy Solo could be Jon K from the office. He always looked like a man child to me. For Bernard I'd want Kevin Spacey, he's so great at being heartless.

David(LA,CA) (davidscharf) | 327 comments Something in the delivery given by the reader of the audio book version just automatically placed Jewel Staite as Jules for me.

James Almond | 20 comments David(LA,CA) wrote: "Something in the delivery given by the reader of the audio book version just automatically placed Jewel Staite as Jules for me."

Even just reading the book I pictured Jewel Staite as Jules.

message 30: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim | 380 comments Had to google Jewel Staite (hey, it's been a long time since Firefly!), but yes that would work for me :)

message 31: by Tim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tim | 64 comments hah! I was already picturing Evangeline Lily as Jules.

message 32: by John (new) - rated it 4 stars

John Conrad | 1 comments When reading I always pictured Erica Cerra from Eureka as Juliette. I think this has to do with the character she played in that show as much as anything.

Yup me too. In fact if anyone else ever plays her I will be disappointed that's how ingrained it got in my mind. It was the only casting my brain did to me actually.

Although Erica Cerra might do in a pinch.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2217 comments I kept seeing Juliette as Bitsie Tulloch, probably because she plays a character called Juliette in Grimm. I can just so easily picture her tinkering with machines, somehow.

David(LA,CA) (davidscharf) | 327 comments I don't know why, but listening to the latest podcast where they mentioned this thread triggered another casting choice for me:

Paul Giamatti as Bernard.

Meghan (mesulli) | 14 comments Ooh, Paul Giamatti would be good as Bernard. He can be good at evil too.

message 37: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Clark | 35 comments for a second during the audio book the Juliette voice the narrator did sounded a little like Sarah Michelle Gellar to me, so for the rest of the book I kept picturing Buffy. I think it especially worked when she would threaten people.
Although now that I see Erica Cerra mentioned she seems like she would be really good.

message 38: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna | 31 comments For me Juliette looked mostly like Meryl Streep. When she was in her 30s. Although I think Evangeline Lilly or Bitsy Tulloch would work for me too. I didn't like her on Lost, but that was mostly that I didn't really like her character.

I find the concept of casting very interesting, because I never thought of books that way. I mainly tend to have a general idea and it's more about the way the person is than what he/she looks like. I notice a bias here that I didn't even think of anyone non-caucasian... But I think Lucy Liu for example would be a great choice, even if I wasn't imagining it when I was reading :)

²Ñ²¹³Ùí²¹²õ (toote) | 1 comments From the moment it appeared I always pictured Robbie Coltrane as Knox. Maybe tinted from the physical similarities of the character to Harry Potter's Hagrid

Gordon (daftyman) | 34 comments Eve Miles (Welsh woman from torchwood) would be my choice for Juliette. A strong woman that you could picture getting dirty fixing machines and getting the job done.

message 41: by [deleted user] (last edited May 22, 2013 10:45PM) (new)

Holston - Michael Fassbender (edit: actually Kevin Spacey... I read him as older in Book 1 then in Book 2 he seemed a lot younger because of Jahns & Marnes's perspective)
Jahns - Sally Field
Marnes - Kurt Russell
Jules - Mila Kunis
Bernard - Timothy Spall
Walker - John Hurt
Knox - Mickey Rourke
Lukas - Anton Yelchin
Scottie - Andrew Garfield

message 42: by Andi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Andi (andi2517) | 3 comments Nathan Fillion (another Firefly alum) would make a great Holsten.

message 43: by Kat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kat | 0 comments Lena Headey for Juliette.

Emmanuel Parfond (frenchdude) | 47 comments Stuart wrote: "So, because I was curious, I asked Hugh Howey about his preferred Juliette casting on Twitter"

Here's the link if anyone wants to follow Howey, or retweet his response :)

Josh Ryther | 5 comments The guy who plays Hagrid in Harry Potter as Knox.

Clyde (wishamc) | 561 comments Kat wrote: "Lena Headey for Juliette."

Nooooo! (Runs away very quickly. ;-) )

Scott | 312 comments I actually pictured Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliette (although that's probably due to Lost lol). Or maybe Jewel Staite (yeah it's the mechanic thing lol)

Sam Elliot would be a good Marnes.

Galifinakis is a good Jimmy/Solo but he'd have to slim down in my opinion

Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid from HP) would be a good Knox

Not really an actor but I pictured Lukas as Goemon from Lupin the Third with maybe more unkempt/spiky hair
