Josh | 1 comments Hi all. I am new to the genre and absolutely love it, so much going on and yet the characters are often so relatable. Cheers.

Melissa Cherie Elsey (cherieelsey8486) Hi, my name is Melissa. I'm kind of new to dystopian books. I didn't know that was what they were referred to as lol. I like The Hunger Games and The Divergent Series. I like Maze Runner but have gotten a bit stuck on the death cure. Mainly because I borrowed it digitally from the library and they changed how the site works, so I forgot where I was lol.

The books that made me realize what dystopian was and that I loved it was the Endless summer series by Theresa shaver. We were on a trip and I didn't have internet and couldn't get to the library book I was reading. So I decided to read one of the many books I have on my kindle(have a bad habit of downloading free books and then never reading them lol) I started reading snap and ash by Theresa Shaver and was hooked. I am now addicted to dystopian novels. I'm always looking for suggestions on new ones to read!! Since I'm newish to the genre I don't know what to look for.

RJ (romanticalrj) | 2 comments Hello, I'm Riley.... like my username says.... I love dystopian books (and food). My favorite books and series are endless but one of my favorites is Harry Potter which is not a dystopian series, it's fantasy. I'm not typically a huge fantasy fan because I often feel like the characters aren't super relatable and sometimes the story line just seems so far fetched.... but anyway, this isn't a fantasy group. Sorry, my train of thought tends to wander. I also like most of the new YA dystopian (minus the Maze Runner, which I didn't find that intriguing for some reason). My favorite food is pizza but I'll eat almost anything, I love music and acting and I wish I could dance (I can't). And of course, I love reading. My own family teases me because I "hide" in my room to read all the time.

Brenda (brendabren) Hi everyone! I'm new to the genre when it comes to reading. one of my favorite movies of all time is BLADE RUNNER. I do own DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP but I've been a book hoarder and I've yet to read it. I don't post much but do read threads and comments. Also, feel free to add me as a friend. I like to see on my feed what others are reading. Cheers!

Lindsay Pierce (lm_pierce) | 3 comments Hello everyone! Glad to see fellow lovers of dystopian work! I am a reader, lover, and writer of speculative science fiction, which encompasses a lot of dystopian themes. I love horror, gritty, and dark stuff, and thus that is the kind of stuff I write!

Looking forward to mingling with everyone on the forums. Cheers!

message 663: by Sinisa (new)

Sinisa Mikasinovic (extremko) | 12 comments Hello!

New guy here, although I have no idea what took me so long to join the group. It's like an All You Can Eat buffet to a dystopiofile. Yes, this is a word. I just made it up :)

Just finished Primal Dawn, and started up on Days of Future Past. Neither are dystopian novels, and both were received for free. I'm running a little experiment to see how good are unknown and up-and-coming authors. Usually, there's just a general genre choice there. Not much dystopia I'd be willing to give 5+ hours of listening to.

Anyway, introduction threads never cease to amaze me. Almost 4 years old now, but still going strong. I guess people on GR don't let good things die :)

There's no better group to ask this in, and this is an introduction thread, so I guess I'm not breaking any rules here.

Here it goes: Whoever actually writes reviews, please ping me or add me as a friend. I actually like reading other people's thoughts about books, rather than seeing Such And Such rated this book 3* in my feed. This is a very good motivator for me to pick the book up.

Especially if we match regarding genres and ratings. I'll tend to trust your vote more the higher our reading compatibility is.

If you like, you can read my reviews too, I won't complain :) Although they tend to be longer, so be warned! Let me know if you strongly dislike any of my reviews, too. I'll defend my standpoint and we can have a good old-fashioned fight on the internet!

Hope you cracked a smile at least :)

Cheers!

Welcome to Omar and Sinisa.

Sinisa I don't write reviews but I'm following a lot of people as I love to read other people's reviews and I've found out I even enjoy reviews more after I've read the book. :)

Btw the books you linked look quite interesting. Thanks for the share. Feel free to keep us updated with you current reads (and reviews) in this topic.

Cheers back at you :)

message 665: by Sinisa (new)

Sinisa Mikasinovic (extremko) | 12 comments Thank you Ellie!

Both books were random picks in my challenge to see if not-so-well-known authors and narrators are really worth the attention, and both were pleasant surprises.

I guess that subject warrants a topic of its own, and I'll take care of that tomorrow as I'd also like other opinions on it.

Second book is just finished and I'll jump to linked topic for some quick sharing. Tomorrow. another book :-)

Diane | 1 comments Hi, I'm Dyne. I'm live in Cupertino, CA, which is a suburb of San Francisco. I'm originally from South Korea. My favorite types of books are dystopian ones, but I read all kinds. So far, my favorite books are The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and 1984 by George Orwell.

message 667: by Bau (new)

Bau Johnson | 1 comments Hello!

My name's Bau, and I'm from Moorcroft, WY. I love dystopians, with my first one being Fahrenheit 451. I'm looking for any sort of dystopian read, because it makes me think about our world and how much influence, for better or worse, the write draws upon.

My last read was The Bottle Stopper by Angeline Trevena.

message 668: by Maggie (new)

Maggie McFee | 5 comments I just finished "Ash Tuesday" (available on amazon.com). Great read of the quest for survival set in 2018. So real, it was quite terrifying - it could really happen.

message 669: by Olga (new)

Olga | 6 comments Hi, I'm Ola. I like dystopian and post-apocalyptic themes but I have a hard time finding books as I'm not overly into sci-fi (recommendations would be appreciated!). I like books such as the "Exilon 5" trilogy by Eliza Green. This is her debut and I really got into the story and couldn't put it down. The first one was a free download. Unfortunately they are only available through ebooks (I like worn out, ratty paperbacks). I haven't read that many dystopian/post-apocalyptic so I hope I can find some through this group. I've read some of the staples..."Brave New World", "1984", "The Chysalids". I hope this group is still active and I hope to learn of some new titles in this genre.

Katie | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Katie and a big fan of dystopian novels. I read the book jacket of a novel but can't for the life of me remember what it was called or who the author was. Can you help me out? I remember it being about children that have to take a test controlled by the government and the children can't be "too" smart. I remember reading that the father or whoever the 'caretaker' of the child was intentionally giving them the wrong answers to questions. Has anyone else heard of a story like this? Thank you!

message 676: by Carmel (new)

Carmel (carmelly) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Carmel, and I just thought I'd introduce myself. Dystopian fiction has been my favorite genre since 5th grade when my teacher read us The Giver. It's still one of my favorite books (and I only recently discovered that it's a whole series!). My other early loves were classics such as 1984 and Brave New World. More recently I've read the The Hunger Games Trilogy and Divergent series, Hugh Howey's The Wool Trilogy (like 3 times, plus a bunch of his others), Flowertown and... what else? There are a lot. Just now I finished rereading The Handmaid's Tale before starting to watch the new series.

I don't join many groups or discussions, but I hope this one will help fuel my obsession with dystopian societies. I know there have got to be a ton of other great books out there that I haven't even heard of yet. Looking forward to reading with you guys :)

message 678: by Kaz (new)

Kaz Calva (kazcalva) | 3 comments Hello all,

I'm Kaz Calva, and I'm an author. However, my other books were written in different genres (mainly non-fiction) under other names. So now, I'm delving into the fiction world and will be releasing my first series very soon. It's a dystopian series on the affects of social media on society - mob mentality, murders streamed on Facebook live - and censorship.

I love writing dystopian because I find it utterly cathartic.

my goal this year was to read 6 books and I'm already ahead of that (miracles do happen!). I'm always looking for suggestions on what to read next and this looked like a good place to start. Thanks for having me.

I'm loving that the genre is more popular now - there are so many more books to read! What are your favorite new dystopian books/series?

message 684: by Jeremiah (new)

Jeremiah John (glassdimly) | 1 comments Hello friends,

My name is Jeremy John, and I've recently completed a dystopia novel.

My favorite works of dystopian fiction are:
Fahrenheit 451
1984
The Windup Girl
The Chrysalids
Feed

I read scifi (and fantasy) voraciously and I love to talk about it. I'm working my way through many of the classics in the genre--making up for a misspent youth reading Dostoevsky and theology.

I have spent much of my time in activism as well, and am always down for a good critique of capitalism.

Looing forward to getting to know you all. Feel free to befriend me.

S.K. Munt (wordwhisperer) Hi I'm Sam from Australia. I am a huge Dystopian fan. So thrilled to see the Handmaid's Tale is a show now I think it's really important that its message comes across now.

I like gentler Dystopian with a romantic feel to them but ones that step out of the box and have a hopeful, happy message. Nothing too grim! Hated how they ended THG

Welcome S.K.

I've recently started watching the Handmaid's tale. I decided not to re-read the novel. I'm very happy how it is going so far. Some scenes are so well done and I feel transported back to the book. I've seen a lot of people reading the novel in public transport lately. I agree with you about it's message. I think a lot of people will discard it's warnings just because it seems too far off to them. A good point is made to social inactivity. Something we can all contribute more to.

I also really enjoyed THG, the books and the movie, thought the third book felt a bit rushed. I did read it a long time ag though. I remember the movie ending but that didn't feel right. The book did not end like did it?

I actually haven't watched the third movie, lol. I re-watch re-read the first two all the time but there wasn't a single thing about the third that I liked.

No I've decided not to re-read The Handmaid's Tale either, and though I've only had the chance to watch the pilot so far I love the way they've done it.

I've never forgotten the thing about her identitycard with her credit cards and I.D all stored in the one place, and about how they were switched off. That's haunted me since I first read the book about 10 years ago, and ever since we started getting the apple watches and banking apps and now the pay for things with your phone, I've been sweating bullets, lol.

Jojo (jojoxx) | 2 comments Heya. I'm Joanna. I feel like I can definitely relate to this group chat. Dystopian literature is incredibly harrowing, dark, and strikingly realistic. I'm reading The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood at the moment. It's a satirical, sensitive, and intense read - and I would strongly recommend reading or watching the tv drama :)

hayleigh (hahayleigh) hi,
my name is hayleigh, and i would absolutely classify myself as an avid reader. that being said, i have yet to truly immerse myself into the dystopian genre. most recently, under this category, i've read more than this by patrick ness, and, not so recently, legend by marie lu. i am currently reading the raven boys by maggie stiefvater, the demon king by cinda williams chima, and the alchemist by paulo coelho. it'd be safe to say that i'm ecstatic to familiarize myself with new book recommendations, especially those of the dystopian/fantasy kind, as well as some book enthusiasts like myself.

thank you,
hayleigh
