Georgia | 554 comments Am reading The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon . I'm not sure I like this book yet because of the subject matter. I'm 100 pages into it. Well written, but?? If you like the walking dead(TV ) you probably will like this.

message 4007: by Freda (new)

Freda Malone | 60 comments Just finished Gideon I really liked this book because it didn't have a lot of bells and whistles of law enforcement, FBI, CIA or court trials. Just your simple crime read with a great ending.

I am now reading Triptych The first book of the Will Trent series.

Tad (tottman) | 139 comments I just started reading The Nightingale Before Christmas The Nightingale Before Christmas (Meg Lanslow, #18) by Donna Andrews by Donna Andrews which, appropriately enough, begins on December 20th.

The wonderful/annoying thing she does is end each chapter with a mini-cliffhanger (a loud crash came from downstairs) that makes it impossible for you to put the book down because you have to see what happened!

How the Light Gets In How the Light Gets In (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #9) by Louise Penny

I also read a couple of weeks ago the historical fiction An Officer and a Spy An Officer and a Spy by Robert Harris I loved this one. It starts slowly but keeps on building in suspense. This is based on the Dreyfus Affair.

Devi Nair (views_she_writes) | 116 comments The Return (Second Coming, #1) by Carter Vance is the first of a two part novel of the return of Jesus Christ. A wonderful thriller novel, it is a cannot-put-me-down type of book. Try my review of The Return

message 4013: by Devi (new)

Devi Nair (views_she_writes) | 116 comments Even Dead Men Play Chess by Michael Weitz is a chess based murder mystery. Do not go by the title of the book. Although the title in itself is not very catchy, the story is irresistible. A completely engrossing tale, it is a must read for all murder mystery / thriller enthusiasts. Check out my review at Even Dead Men Play Chess

Devi Nair (views_she_writes) | 116 comments The Grandmaster's King (Ray Gordon #2) by Michael Weitz is the second in the Ray Gordon mysteries. Another brilliant work by Michael Weitz, this is a notch up from the first book. Totally awesome. check out my review at The Grandmaster's King

Bridget Knight | 1 comments I'm reading HOUSE OF SILK by Anthony Horowitz. I love a good Sherlock Holmes book.

message 4018: by Paul (new)

Paul I've read that Bridget. I wasn't expecting much, to be honest, but was pleasantly surprised. I thought it a good introduction to Holmes, especially for younger readers, who might find Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's language a bit dated.

Here's my review:

I read that book earlier this year and absolutely loved it. It was so uplifting! I had my book group read it for December, and they all loved it too. It's one of the few books I have no problems recommending to anyone.

Now I have to finish up No Fortunate Son (Pike Logan, #7) by Brad Taylor before I move on to Die Again (Rizzoli & Isles, #11) by Tess Gerritsen

message 4026: by Paul (new)

Paul Called into my local Hospice shop this morning to donate several books & thought i may as well have a quick look-see. Wasn't expecting to find anything, as they seem to have mostly 'popular-but-boring' books. But then i spotted Scaredy Cat (Tom Thorne, #2) by Mark Billingham & Sleepers by Lorenzo Carcaterra . $6 for the both of them. I didn't realize 'Sleepers' was made into a film, starring Brad Pitt
Minnie Driver
Robert De Niro
Kevin Bacon
Dustin Hoffman, among other well known actors.

Both books & movie look really good. Clearly i will have to call into the Hospice shop more often.

Love the 'Dortmunder' series Mike. So different from Donald Westlake's alter ego Richard Stark's 'Parker' series, which i also liked.

Paul I just acquired 'Tarantula' (aka. Mygale) by Thierry Jonquet. It's a psychological thriller/horror novel & looks rather hair-raising & not at all for the squeamish.

It was made into a movie; "The Skin I Live In (Spanish: La piel que habito) is a 2011 Spanish psychological thriller film written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, starring Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, Jan Cornet, and Roberto Álamo. The Skin I Live In is based on Thierry Jonquet's novel Mygale, first published in French and then in English under the title Tarantula. The film premiered in May 2011 in competition at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, and won Best Film Not in the English Language at the 65th British Academy Film Awards.' -Wikipedia.

Full description is here;

& of course it's listed on GR. Mygale by Thierry Jonquet

Paul Here's another potentially intriguing novel i acquired today.
I loved The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham , having read it as a teenager & again last year. I enjoyed it even more on my 2nd reading. Here's a sequel, The Night of the Triffids by Simon Clark , i got today, not by Wyndham, of course, but apparently faithful to the original & the story resumes 25 years after Wyndham's classic.
Needless to say, it's on my TBR list.

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Just finished Under a Raging Moon (River City Crime Novel) by Frank Zafiro Classic police procedural that presents a very uncompromising look at police officers and police work. Interesting more than entertaining but I recommend it highly for a relatively unbiased look at city police work today.

Right now, it's still a free download for Kindle but I've already purchased the 2nd book in the series, which doesn't happen all that often for me.

Sandysbookaday (sandyj21) | 4763 comments Imperfect Strangers Imperfect Strangers by David Staniforth

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sally has friends who are bitches.

When they are being cruel to the night-watchman in their workplace, Sally smiles at him in sympathy.

It is probably the biggest mistake she is ever going to make....

I was hooked on this book from the opening paragraphs.

David Staniforth has done a great job of writing this psychological thriller.

It is a fast paced, but easy read. The author obviously has a sense of humour which he unleashes every now and then, and has researched his subject well.

I am looking forward to further books from this author.

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 92 comments I am currently reading The Ark of Asylum by Scott Kotrous . It is more of a sci fi thriller since it discusses a disaster caused by the use of some tainted gas used by police on protesters. We begin to speculate that the terrorists that are generating the unrest of the citizens might have sabotaged the gas. Citizens, after being sprayed, become zombie in their behavour. Only those with survival cellars with enough supplies will survive. I have read about 3/4 of the book and am really enjoying it. I'll give a complete review when I finish.

message 4049: by Sandi (new)

Sandi | 451 comments I discovered Barbara Cleverly earlier in the year. She has two series, one a Scotland Yard detective, the other a fantasy about a young woman and Sheroock after his retirement. Sandilands has several in India, so I learned a lot. The Sherlock a little slow. But once you accept the premise, quite fun.

Her latest, "Enter Pale Death ," in the Sandilands series we finally got from the library. An incredible wait! So there must be many Cleverly fans. Read both in order or there will be much confusion!
