This is where you should post book titles that you do not find already being discussed. There is no limitations on the type of book that can be discussed here.

Let's get talking!

message 8: by Branden (new)

Branden (bjoycer98) | 2 comments I am only about a third through this book due to reading too many at once right now....but, I am totally loving it so far. I absolutely love when a book actually puts me inside I am the fly hanging around the pail of lion chum....

Welcome Kimberly! Please let me know your thoughts on this book. I've never heard of it so I'm very curious to learn more about it.

And Branden - mommy brain farts are totally allowed. I have them way too regularly myself!

Meghan | 423 comments Mod
No, I'm going to have to come up with a new punishment for this group. Hmmmmmm... Well, on John and Kate plus 8 they make you go sit in time out. Therefore, Sarah, you must sit in the timeout chair for 5 minutes.

message 17: by Robbie (new)

Robbie Bashore | 141 comments Mod
Meghan, the book is Lying Awake. (I'm assuming that's what you wanted the folder "Lie Awake" to be for.) Nose in the corner, right now! ;)

Besides, you come keep me company in the corner! hee

message 22: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (kylewilk) | 11 comments anyone care to discuss the glass castle? i'm still trying to figure out why i hated it when everyone loved it. well...hated is a strong word, but you know what i mean...

message 23: by Robbie (new)

Robbie Bashore | 141 comments Mod
I'd be happy to discuss it.

message 24: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (kylewilk) | 11 comments cool. ok let me try to put this into words....over the past 15 years or so, there have been an abundance of memoirs describing dysfunctional childhoods. i won't say ad nauseum...but...there have been a lot. now comes along another one, and THIS one everyone loves. so i pick it up 'cause i have a strong interest in memoirs (am trying to write my own as well at the moment)....

loved the first 2 pages. enjoyed the last quarter of the book (where she is a more reliable narrator)...but WAS DESPERATE to get through the rest (bulk) of the book because, for every little fable or situation she began, not only did i know how it was going to end, but i got very tired of being hit over the head with perfect little stories to illustrate, with uncanny certitude and a laser-like focus, some other aspect of her admittedly dysfunctional upbringing. where was the realism in those stories (don't get me wrong...i think a lot of bad stuff happened to her....maybe even worse than her stories, it's just that the stories are all too pat...too perfect in illustrating something or other while she's busy pretending they're from a child's point of view when, in fact, the realistic aspects of the stories have been stripped away by an adult narrator in order to maximize her point). aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh i'm breathless, but desperate for someone to agree with me. i mean....the piano goes through an entire house, ends up out in the sand somewhere and THEN THEY PROCEED TO PLAY ON IT FOR WEEKS??????? really.

thoughts? or am i just crazy.

message 25: by Bree (new)

Bree Kyle--may i suggest A Girl Named Zippy--now keep in mind that I have not read this BUT I too am tired of dysfunctional childhood memoirs and this did not sound like that kind of book. I have it on my to read list cuz sometimes I just need something that is happy and grateful.

Also if you are a Jane Austen fan I would HIGHLY recommend A Walk with Jane Austen: A Journey into Adventure, Love, and Faith...this is also a memoir and I LOVED it. I could relate to this woman very well.

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) | 284 comments Mod
Brenda, are these books you're just recommending or books you want us to add to the list here? I'd be happy to creat a folder if that's what you want. :)

message 27: by Bree (new)

Bree I was mostly just recommending them as ones that DON'T seem to be about dysfunctional families. I haven't read Zippy yet, it just sounded fun. So you don't need to make a folder, unless there is the other odd person out there who reads all things Jane Austen related :P I wouldn't mind having someone to discuss A Walk with Jane Austen with.

message 28: by Meghan (new)

Meghan | 423 comments Mod
Well I can't discuss it with you Brenda (as I haven't read it), but I've created a folder for you to post some comments. Please do! Maybe it'll entice some others.

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) | 284 comments Mod
I'll create a folder for you, Despina. I haven't read it but it's on my list!

message 30: by Shannon (last edited Feb 01, 2008 02:56PM) (new)

Shannon | 1 comments Cool group ladies! I'm not reading any of these books - but eat, pray, love is sitting on my book pile and I will be participating once I get started on this. Too many books - too little time!

message 31: by Meghan (new)

Meghan | 423 comments Mod
Too true Shannon! EPL is on my to-read pile, but it's being bumped up sooner now that there are people who I might be able to discuss it with.

message 32: by Kathrynn (new)

Kathrynn Can you add: A New Earth Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckhart Tolle?

I saw him on Oprah and beginning March 3, 2008 there is going to be a class every Monday night on Oprah.com about this book.

The classes are taped, so can be watched later, but supposed to sign up for the class with Oprah.com

Thought it would be neat to talk about it here...

Up to you though.

Thank you,

Kathrynn

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) | 284 comments Mod
Yep, Kathrynn, you request it and we add it! :)

FYI, though, if you want to discuss it with people who are taking the class and all that, there's a New Earth group that has started up here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ.

But I'll go ahead and create a folder here too.

message 34: by Meghan (new)

Meghan | 423 comments Mod
Mercedes - We have no set schedule of books. If there's a book out there that you want to talk about, just post a request here and we'll set up a folder for it. We only post the books we get requests for. This really isn't a book club so much as an opportunity to talk about a book that you might not have otherwise.

But feel free to jump in on any of the books listed here if you see something you like. The conversations are pretty much ongoing. Although I believe Rebecca is the one which is most active right now.

message 35: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (vargasgirl) | 6 comments I have just begun reading PREP and it is amazing, not at all what I thought it was going to be and so well written. Is anyone else game for reading and discussing?? There are some elements I would really like to talk about with other readers.....

message 36: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) | 284 comments Mod
I will start a folder for you, Danielle.

Terry and all other authors - We have decided to create a folder just for authors to promote their works. We will not create a separate folder for your works unless there is request by someone other than yourself to discuss the book. Nor will we add your book to our shelf unless a discussion is taking place. Please feel free to create a thread for yourself though in our Authors Corner folder.

As of today, any requests by authors for their own books put here will not be acknowledged. Any book promotions in any other folder than the Authors Corner will be deleted.

Thank you for your cooperation. We wish you success in your writing endeavors!

message 41: by Pinkbullets (new)

Pinkbullets | 3 comments Hello everyone,

my name is Caecilia - and I have just joined your friendly group :) What made me want to join was basically the nice variety in books that are being discussed here.

Speaking of which, is anyone here interested in reading (well-written, not cheezy) modern fiction dealing with family problems (just to give examples: "My Sister's Keeper" by Picoult of "Family History" by Shapiro which I both liked a lot.)

I have ordered Dani Shapiro's latest book "Black & White" and would love to discuss it with someone on here :)

Regards,
Caecilia

Welcome Caecilia! I'm glad you found our little group.

I had a friend who just loved My Sister's Keeper. She wasn't sure if she was going to, but she just gobbled it up (I know, I was witness to it!).

I will create a folder for Black & White. Please feel free to make comments there. I haven't heard of this one (although I have heard of Shapiro) so I'd be interested in reading what you think of the book.

Okay, just wanted you to know I started a folder for Devil in the White City by Erik Larson because I'm absolutely LOVING this book!

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) | 284 comments Mod
Meghan, did you ask yourself for permission to start a discussion first? :p

message 45: by Sera (new)

Sera | 195 comments For the record, I am not a Picoult fan, except for Nineteen Minutes where she finally learned to get an ending right.

I liked Devil in the White City too, but my passion started to fade when I got to the end of the book. I did read it about 5 years ago so that could be part of it.

I'm glad that we are adding some books - let's get the chatter going :)

message 46: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) | 284 comments Mod
Sera, I'm not really a fan of Picoult either, but I couldn't put Nineteen Minutes down!

message 47: by Pinkbullets (new)

Pinkbullets | 3 comments Thank you Meghan :) - I am still waiting for "Black & White" to arrive (amazon), but as soon as I get it & start reading, I will come to the folder (thank you!) and post my viewpoints there.

message 48: by Meghan (new)

Meghan | 423 comments Mod
I know my friend who loved My Sister's Keeper hated the next book she picked up. So I think it's rather touch and go with Picoult.

Anyway, I'm almost done with some books that I've been struggling to finish, so maybe now I can focus on some non-club books and get talkin'!

message 49: by Sera (new)

Sera | 195 comments Meghan, I too hit a reading wall last week. I'm switching to the April Rory books and one other club book before I switch back to reading non-club books. I'm looking forward to something a little different.

By the way, has anyone read No Country for Old Men? It was gripping and fantastic. It's also a quick read.

Talk to you soon. Dexter is on - heehe
