Calathea | 6034 comments Positive thinking, mc! I closed the old one so there won't be any new post on that topic.

message 4: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments But I have to catch up there before I can start here. Forget about 2013 - I still have to catch up on the 2012 recommendations!

Hopefully, this topic will stay bug-free for a while.

Oh, dear, read faster!

message 7: by mc (new)

mc | 1308 comments I don't even know where to start. I think I'll just focus on current recommendations, and when one of you says, 'oh, it's just like x,' I can go back and figure out what you're talking about.

Why each of you prolific readers don't make lists of 'my favorite books of 2012, 2013, etc., I just don't know. :-)

Hey, that's an interesting idea! Anyone feel like posting their top five or ten books of 2012? My thinking is it wouldn't even have to be books released in 2012 per se, but just books you read in 2012.

mc, I can't seem to catch up with these threads either. I swear everyone is at their most prolific while I'm away.

Oh, and to stay on topic, I'm currently reading three books: CUTYS for BOM, Old Poison (because helping to write blurbs on the DG series has made me want to read them all again), and Sarah Black's The General and the Horse-Lord (which will become a traveling book once I'm done).

message 10: by ttg (new)

ttg | 305 comments Heh! Thanks for starting a new list! I'll start off with a book rec. :D

I just finished group member Lou Harper's Spirit Sanguine and thought it was a very good read. I especially liked how it played around with the vampire tropes, and how the vampires weren't the usual can't-be-outside kind, etc. Very fun book (and there's a new free short story with the MCs, so looking forward to checking that out too.)

As an aside for mc. There are actually best of 2012, 2013 lists we can vote on. Here are mine for m/m: Favorites from 2012, Favorites from 2013

I have that book but have not read it yet. Thanks for the review. Soon. Very soon.

message 12: by Charming (new)

Charming (charming_euphemism) I have a new category. I already had "the book I am reading on my Kindle," "the audiobook I am listening to," and usually "the fanfic I am reading on my laptop." Now I also have "the book I am reading on my iPhone." Since I really only read books on my phone in lines and when stuck somewhere I wasn't expecting to be stuck, this category is best for easy reads that can be picked up and put down frequently, and are easy to get back into after a week or so.

Right now I have The F Words by Anyta Sunday on tap. Her books are a little long; a little over the top; and a little repetitive, so perfect for phone reading.

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments Oh, boy. The five best books I read in 2012. Well, I glanced over my 5 star reads from 2012, and my five favorites, in no particular order, are:

Frat Boy and Toppy
The Hot Floor
Pearl
The Gravedigger's Brawl
Bad Boyfriend

Somehow, I've read more than five books that I really, really loved this year so far. So my top more-than-five for 2013 are:

Slam!
Laying Ghosts
Family Man
Cold Days
The City's Son
Too Stupid to Live
A Spear of Summer Grass
A Reason To Believe
Captain Vorpatril's Alliance

mc | 1308 comments Tina Kay, I appreciate that I'm not entirely alone in my discussion agoraphobia (or is it claustrophobia?)

Thank you, Becky! I have to start a spreadsheet and start putting these suggestions on.

Do you know that I actually have a spreadsheet with nearly all of my m/m purchases? It has been very empty of new additions for months. I have to admit, ever since Fictionwise closed, I don't have an easy way of seeing what new releases there are across publishers every week.

I am a strange mix of compulsive yet disorganized.

Susinok | 5205 comments I started Anagama Fires by Sarah Black this morning. Sarah definitely did her research or knows a few potters. Her stuff is 100% correct so far. I did pottery for 20 years after high school. It's great fun.

The story is also good so far. :)

Coming up with a list is hard work! Oiy.

Has anyone here read Golden Witchbreed by Mary Gentle? Or the sequel Ancient Light?

I haven't read them yet, but I sorta skimmed them awhile back. I've been debating reading them, since they apparently are where the sorta popular/sorta in use gender neutral pronouns in English came from.

Reggie Enjoyed Dirty Laundry (Cole McGinnis, #3) by Rhys Ford Rhys Ford

Another great multi-cultural read. I highly recommend it to people following the series. The mystery is good and the two other story lines in the background are done well. More interesting/entertaining side characters to get to know.

The first chapter is so much fun it is worth the price of the book!! =D

The ending is HFN.... not a sweet happy end note, but not a cliffhanger either. Very well done.

message 25: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments I just read three Sarah Black books back to back. Idaho Pride, Idaho Battleground, and Anagama Fires. I loved them all.

Anagama Fires really surprised me with the detailed description of a working wood kiln pottery. The best part is SHE GOT IT RIGHT! :) The romance was also very good. Two estranged lovers reconnecting. However, I was so jazzed about the pottery. I learned ceramics in high school and did it for 20 years as a hobby after that. I've even help fire a wood kiln.

Doing the pottery geek happy dance over here.

I love that book! Tey is such a good writer. Excellent mysteries, beautiful writing...if she hadn't been writing in the hey day of classic mystery, she'd have been heralded as a genius. As it was, she was vying for airspace against Christie, Marsh, Mitchell, etc.

Averin | 111 comments In between LHNB edits, I read Crack the Darkest Sky Wide Open by Eric Arvin . I pre-ordered it through Tumblr and really looked forward to it. I wish I'd liked it more, maybe I'll re-read it before school starts. And skip the stories (TJ Klune and Abi Roux) that made me cry. And the one story I did not like at all.

Josh, did you know that Tey was also a successful playwright? At a time when people went to see plays in the same way they go to the cinema now (especially in London), she had a West End hit starring John Gielgud under the name Gordon Daviot.

This week I read Dirty Laundry (Cole McGinnis, #3) by Rhys Ford and Spirit Sanguine by Lou Harper .

I love Rhys Ford's series, but this one was manic even for me, and I really go for overblown on occasion. I don't remember Cole being so, uh... "hyper" in the first or second book. He certainly is less restrained with his emotions. : ) The first chapter is like a comic low-budget version of a Bond film opening scene. Fun. I wonder if Rhys teasingly built her plot around those comments about confusing Korean names? ;-)

Lou, for someone "starting to think everyone is burned out on vampires" you pulled off a very enjoyable contemporary version.

I spent most of Saturday listening to the audio of CUTYS! Amazing! It saved my sanity when I was too tired to do much of anything.

And I came to seriously appreciate that scene the narrator was talking about in his interview. I think he said it was the hardest to read. He really took his time and made you feel every emotion from both characters.

Susinok | 5205 comments I am almost done with Lancelot in Love by GA Hauser, a really nice coming out story. Reece is 23, just graduated from college, and terrified that people will find out that he is gay.

Reece goes on vacation with his college friends and meets Lance, who is at the lake getting over a breakup. Sparks fly and Reece has his first sexual contact with another guy.

This story so far has been really nice. It is not gay for you. Reece knew he was gay, but didn't' want anyone else to know. It's all about coming out and how scary it is for a person.

Oh and the cover is gorgeous!

Lancelot in Love by G.A. Hauser

I think this is my first Hauser book. Not sure. She's written a lot.

The first book (Mind Fuck) is the best one so far, though. If you haven't read that one yet, you should give it a try!! One of the best books I've read this year!
