A Lifetime of Books Challenge

Say, you post your list this May..and you are, say, 26 years old...your challenge duration is May 2009-May 2010.

Yes...you are correct...

The challenge is to read a book published for every year in your lifetime...so yes, specific years, from the year you were born to the current year. You can fill your list up as you go, or you can complete the list at the start or do something in between. Changing the list as you progress with the challenge is also okay.
Just remember, as soon as you post a list (complete or incomplete) you are expected to post your challenge duration, too.

The challenge is to read a book published for every year in your lifetime...so yes, specific years, from the year you were born to the current year. You can fill your list up as you..."
So I'm suppose to pick books published in each year, starting with the year I was born?
That's going to be difficult simply because there is no way of knowing what year a book is published til you open up the cover and look at the copyright date. Or check a specific book in ŷ. But it's not like there is a way to sort or search for books by a specific year.

*** Just realized this is the romance thread (Yz does get around, and I some times forget where I am - LOL), so I suppose there were probably romance books around then, but I'm glad to hear the challenge is open to all genres. =)

I'm still working on finding resources to get print dates for books, but I'm sure we will be able to come up with something.
And yes, this can be any genre and rereads are more than welcome.

You should be to fill in some of the list this way.
...At least it worked for me. I couldn't find one book only - for 1986. But I think I've got it now: I applied the same method to my friends' shelves and voila: a book by Stephen King.

LOL...it would actually be interesting to read how romance novels changed throughout the years. I remember when I was in my teens, the heroes are this remote, arrogant, super rich tycoon or something, and the heroines are this mousy, virginal, all-alone-in-my-life females. Then there are the fads...pirates, highlanders, millionaires...of course now, we have vampires, werewolves...etc...Isn't that fascinating?

third printing 1982
americana edition 1986
do we use the original copyrighted date? or the date for the edition we have?
I was looking at this particular set for the copyright date, as the entire set was reprinted all at once in 1986. But they were written earlier than that and it's a set of 50 books. I've got 35 books out of the 50 left to finish reading the series and I need old books. lol So was going back to the original published, ie copyright date.

I went with the "first published"... I think you're cool with the copyright date then ;-)

Thanks. Trying to fill older years gets harder.

I will be 30 in October.... It is a tough one! Are we counting a book for 2010 as well? as the challenge won't end til next year?

So in your case, you can set it for a year, but if you feel a year will not be enough, add the extra six months.
This is only for those whose ages are in the cusp, as in 29, 39, etc, like Michelle and me.
(See, the advantage of being the challenge originator..I get to make the rules..LOL)

That suits me fine, a year should be plenty, unless you come up with too many other exciting challenges in the meantime! I love to read anyway and this gives me extra incentive.

(Read books published every year starting with the year you were born)

I've given up on this challenge as I just can't force myself to read books that were written/printed before the 80s. Yuck. Also, I had to choose between completing my April 2011 challenges or reading these boring books. Guess what won?

This is a really fun idea for a challenge. I will definately participate, but I have to work on my list. I'd like to read my list in order, so that it really is like traveling through time in books or something like that. I probably won't read them back to back or anything, because I still have to keep up on my new releases. I'll try to get my list together so I can start in May.

Hmm...I think I'll follow suit. I'll get my list together and be ready to start by my b-day (the 9th). :O)

You know you're a reader when... one of the main things you look for in a new house is whether there's room for the bookcases. They were made by my dad to my specifications, solid wood, hand panelled, and fabulous. If it was at all possible - they're what I'd save in the event of a fire!

Inspired by my PNR challenge, I'm launching A Lifetime of Books Challenge. The goal is to read a book published for every year in your life. Still here reading?
Very basic rules: If you are in your 20's, you are given a year to complete it, in your 30's a year and a half, in your 40's 2 years. Add six months for every extra decade.
Your clock starts ticking the moment you posted your list.
Anybody up for the challenge?
