Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Warning: Not for the faint-of-heart! Really hardcore challenge!

Inspired by my PNR challenge, I'm launching A Lifetime of Books Challenge. The goal is to read a book published for every year in your life. Still here reading?

Very basic rules: If you are in your 20's, you are given a year to complete it, in your 30's a year and a half, in your 40's 2 years. Add six months for every extra decade.

Your clock starts ticking the moment you posted your list.

Anybody up for the challenge?

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments I'm in, too..since I came up with this monster..LOL...

Just have to work on my list...

message 4: by Jess (new)

Jess Oh wow!! lol. I think I'm glad that I'm only 23 lol. I'll do this one as soon as I finish the other challenges I'm working on in this group.

message 5: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (last edited Apr 23, 2009 11:56AM) (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments LOL..but wouldn't it be so cool to see all those titles for every year...like walking through your life's library or something...LOL

message 6: by Annvelwis (new)

Annvelwis | 671 comments I'm in. I have a question, though. If I get it right, every participant have to set the opening date of the challange, right?

message 7: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey So if it goes into next year, we'll have to read a 2010 read as well right?

message 8: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments That is correct.

Say, you post your list this May..and you are, say, 26 years old...your challenge duration is May 2009-May 2010.

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Kristen wrote: "So if it goes into next year, we'll have to read a 2010 read as well right?"

Yes...you are correct...

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Can we read any books for this? It's just the number of books that count? Or are we to read books published in specific years? I'm confused. I've already read 44 books this year, so reading another 42 won't be hard. lol Do we just have to list the specific books ahead of time, but any book counts? Please help narrow it down so I know what I'm suppose to be listing.

message 11: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (last edited Apr 23, 2009 12:37PM) (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Briansgirl:

The challenge is to read a book published for every year in your lifetime...so yes, specific years, from the year you were born to the current year. You can fill your list up as you go, or you can complete the list at the start or do something in between. Changing the list as you progress with the challenge is also okay.

Just remember, as soon as you post a list (complete or incomplete) you are expected to post your challenge duration, too.

So I'm suppose to pick books published in each year, starting with the year I was born?

That's going to be difficult simply because there is no way of knowing what year a book is published til you open up the cover and look at the copyright date. Or check a specific book in ŷ. But it's not like there is a way to sort or search for books by a specific year.

message 13: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments that is exactly it, Briansgirl. So its like a bibliophile's version of memory lane..LOL

message 14: by Katya (Book Queen) (last edited Apr 23, 2009 12:49PM) (new)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Since I was born in 1967.... I have to find a book published in 1967. Then for '68, '69, etc. Correct? For awhile it won't be difficult but after awhile it'll be hard to fill the gaps not knowing what years books are published ahead of time, since we can't search by years.

message 15: by DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (last edited Apr 23, 2009 12:58PM) (new)

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) Eek! This one is daunting... Does anyone know of a good site/resource for finding books published by year? I wouldn't have the first clue where to look for something published in 1975. And I'm assuming these can be from any category, not just PNR - which probably wasn't a big genre back in the day. ;) LOL

*** Just realized this is the romance thread (Yz does get around, and I some times forget where I am - LOL), so I suppose there were probably romance books around then, but I'm glad to hear the challenge is open to all genres. =)

message 16: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey I'm glad I was only born in 1984! A way you can do this is look at long standing award lists maybe.

message 17: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (last edited Apr 23, 2009 12:58PM) (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments That's why I call this challenge NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART..LOL...I was born in 1970, Briansgirl, so I'm more or less in the same boat as you...LOL

I'm still working on finding resources to get print dates for books, but I'm sure we will be able to come up with something.

And yes, this can be any genre and rereads are more than welcome.

message 18: by Kasia (new)

Kasia OK first of all what you do is go to your to-read shelf => chose view: list => and then sort by year pub (year published)

You should be to fill in some of the list this way.

...At least it worked for me. I couldn't find one book only - for 1986. But I think I've got it now: I applied the same method to my friends' shelves and voila: a book by Stephen King.

LOL...it would actually be interesting to read how romance novels changed throughout the years. I remember when I was in my teens, the heroes are this remote, arrogant, super rich tycoon or something, and the heroines are this mousy, virginal, all-alone-in-my-life females. Then there are the fads...pirates, highlanders, millionaires...of course now, we have vampires, werewolves...etc...Isn't that fascinating?

message 20: by Katya (Book Queen) (last edited Apr 23, 2009 01:15PM) (new)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I've got 6 or 7 apple boxes in the basement of ancient antique 30-50 year old romance novels. lol I havn't NOT put all those in goodreads yet though. lol I may have to break into them to find older years. OKay, I'm in and I'll start next week in May. I'll start working on a list. The list will evolve as I go as I'll start by filling it out with books I'm already going to read for upcoming challenges and then eventually work to fill in the gaps. lol Thankfully I have 2 years since I have to read 42 books (as of next month). lol

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) what if a book has more than one published date, for different editions? example....

copyrighted 1976
original hardcover edition by Mills & Boon(UK) 1976
harlequin presents edition 1977
second printing 1979
third printing 1982
americana edition 1986

do we use the original copyrighted date? or the date for the edition we have?

I was looking at this particular set for the copyright date, as the entire set was reprinted all at once in 1986. But they were written earlier than that and it's a set of 50 books. I've got 35 books out of the 50 left to finish reading the series and I need old books. lol So was going back to the original published, ie copyright date.

message 23: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments I'm starting May, too...probably used my PNR challenge for the 2000s years...then I'll worked down up to 1970...

message 24: by Kasia (new)

Kasia Briansgirl wrote: "what if a book has more than one published date, for different editions? example...."

I went with the "first published"... I think you're cool with the copyright date then ;-)

message 25: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments I would go for "first published" or copyright date myself.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) Yz wrote: "I would go for "first published" or copyright date myself."

Thanks. Trying to fill older years gets harder.

Kasia You guys! Putting in Robin McKinley... I love Robin McKinley!!!

message 29: by Kasia (new)

Kasia I've read both, and The Blue Sword too... All great, all make me warm and fuzzy and all have very likable heroines - what more could a girl want?

message 30: by Kasia (new)

message 31: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelle_mc) | 670 comments I like this one, was born in '79, since I'm technically 29 1/2 I only get a year to do it if I post the now? Is that right?

message 32: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Michelle,

I'm in the same dilemma as you are..I'm going to turn 39 this year..so that means by the time I'm about to finish the challenge I should be 40...so do I get the extra six months?....hmmm....

I will be 30 in October.... It is a tough one! Are we counting a book for 2010 as well? as the challenge won't end til next year?

message 34: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments You know what, Michelle, let's keep the option that if we don't finish the challenge at our original duration, we have the option of adding an extra six months if needed to complete it. Will that work?

So in your case, you can set it for a year, but if you feel a year will not be enough, add the extra six months.

This is only for those whose ages are in the cusp, as in 29, 39, etc, like Michelle and me.

(See, the advantage of being the challenge originator..I get to make the rules..LOL)

That suits me fine, a year should be plenty, unless you come up with too many other exciting challenges in the meantime! I love to read anyway and this gives me extra incentive.

This is a really fun idea for a challenge. I will definately participate, but I have to work on my list. I'd like to read my list in order, so that it really is like traveling through time in books or something like that. I probably won't read them back to back or anything, because I still have to keep up on my new releases. I'll try to get my list together so I can start in May.

Hmm...I think I'll follow suit. I'll get my list together and be ready to start by my b-day (the 9th). :O)

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I'm not going to read them in order simply because I put as many books from other challenges on the list so reduce the number of books read. If every challenge used different books, I'd never get them done! lol That being said, I'm starting my oldest book now. lol And yes, I worked it into another challenge too.

Annie (themadnessofhamsters) The joys of moving... which means, if I decide to join in this insanity, I'll be adding my list around 10 May, having unpacked my books - and peered at copyright dates!

message 48: by Kasia (new)

Kasia Ah. I hate moving too, all the packing and unpacking and hauling stuff from place to place. But I love moving into a new place - it's always exciting.

message 49: by Annie (new)

Annie (themadnessofhamsters) Remember that "you know you're a reader" thread? I packed 5 boxes last night and didn't even get to my main bookshelves! They were 'just' my picture books, Trixie Beldens, and my collection of mid-80s to early-90s Harlequins. I still have two overflowing 6-foot bookcases to pack!
You know you're a reader when... one of the main things you look for in a new house is whether there's room for the bookcases. They were made by my dad to my specifications, solid wood, hand panelled, and fabulous. If it was at all possible - they're what I'd save in the event of a fire!

message 50: by Kasia (new)

Kasia You're a reader and a book addict for sure Annie! Congratulations! ;)
