Hello everyone!

I'm new in this website and I find it extremely nice!
Same goes for this group!
I was wondering if anyone could help me identify a book and a short story i read 10-12 years ago.

The short story is about a society that lives in a huge spaceship (i think you would call it a generation ship) The story starts with the reader unaware of all of this, maybe following the main character. I also remember very strong that around the middle or the end, a man (the main character perhaps) finds the end of the 'world' which is a wall and starts to climb it(or pass through it), and after that either the story ends or he discovers the truth. The rest of my memories are even fader, as I was very young when I read this... I remember the society was agricultural and they had a form of religion. The man that reached the end might have followed a custom that prescribed that on the coming of a certain age (old age as I recall) one has to begin the travel of his death at the edge of the world. I remember the story left me in awe but it might have been that I was too young and I was easily surprised...

The book is a very old science fiction novel that describes the life of an astronomer, his daughter and a man. They are living underground because the atmosphere is toxic. So the astronomer has one of the few posts that reach the surface. The develop a canon that can send human beings on space but they can only send two for some reason and they select Venus for their target. in the end the (now?) couple wakes up on a sunny beach full of bliss and with no memory of any other person or planet probably at Venus. The name of the girl is eve. She bites an apple. Suddenly they remember everything. Earth might also have been destroyed for some reason because I remember that they where the last human beings not only in Venus...

Although pretty close, what I'm searching is a short story and not a novel unfortunately... I know it might be difficult but I'm searching these two for years and I'm not willing to give up!
