The Secret Garden is the only one on your list I"ve read, Fiona, although I've heard of several of the others. You're reading TSG with the Challenge, right?

Michelle Paver's books are great as well as Philip Pullman's historical fiction/mystery series. Stormbreaker and Silverfin are supposed to be good, we have them in our library and the kids love them. My coworker read them and loved them.

I really enjoyed the Sally Lockhart (Philip Pullman's) series (but then I can't resist Victorian London mysteries!)and The Homeward Bounders, liked A Little Love Song, thought Stormbreaker was ok (but it's not really aimed at me, it's aimed at 12-year-old boys who dream of being James Bond), hated the Chocolate War, and I'm reading Hood at the moment (slow-going)!

My kids loved the Indian in the Cupboard series, but I'd consider it less YA and more children's. Still a fun read, especially if you have the series & not just the first book.

My brother really enjoyed Silverfin. He's 17. (God, almost 18 now!) And you could definitely use that as one of your genre books for 25.1 (Action/Adventure). Stormbreaker or The Indian in the Cupboard could be used for 20.1, and you could use the Phillip Pullman series for 25.4 or use one as a Mystery for 25.1.

I actually liked The Chocolate War but I couldn't tell you why. I read it for school when I was 14 and for some reason I really liked the mean kid, Archie. It's usually the kind of book I hate, though, with boys being cruel to each other.
