Trying to recall a book which probably was written between 2000 and 2010 where the protagonists were apprehensive about a swarm of evolved humanoids with insect-like wings that were approaching from afar.

Probably a long shot but Maximum Ride by James Patterson?
Could it be Perdido Street Station? I don't recall an attact from insect like humanoids, but some of the characters do fit the description.
Probably a very long shot, but Hyperion, by Dan Simmons?
