Sara No, you're not the only one lol. I also was mad at the end. There were several people in the book I wanted to throw across the room!!!!!! Including America, Aspen, Maxon, Celeste and the King!!!!!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I have mixed feelings about the book ever since I finished it. Why won't America stop seeing Aspen, I mean she knows what'll happen if she's caught. So why keep doing it? But honestly I don't know.Aspen or Maxon??? They both REALLY love her...

Amanda I agree with all of you...Sara especially, i wanted to throw the king across the room as well. America is an idiot. dump the boy that broke your heart and go for the prince. he's kind, handsome, and a prince... lol. im very girly and a bit like celeste in real life so i would marry maxton for the perks but, im falling in love with his character so i guess if i was america i would straight out say that i loved him and end the whole thing. i cant wait for the next book.

Josey Things to do with Maxon, Aspen, and America:

1. Tie them to stakes and sacrifice them to the rebels.

2. Make them go to an all girls or boys school until they can grow up a little.

3. Send rebel assassins to kill them in their sleep.

4. Have America join the rebels and become so hardcore that she swears off boys (or she could join the hunters of artemis :D)

5. Have America find religion and become a nun.

6. Give America an emergency brain transplant from Hermione.

7. Build a book-portal-machine and travel to Ilea and smack them all until they come to their senses.

8. Show America pictures of Aaron Tveit, Corey Cott, Andrew Keenan Bolger, Tommy Bracco, Ryan Breslin, Adam Kaplan, and all of those other fantastic Broadway people so she will become so obsessed with them that she will join all of us helpless fangirls and stop thinking about stupid Maxon and Aspen.

Feel free to post more!! I'm pretty much done for now.

Aggie Pearson Well, as mad as I am at the end of the book, I'm even more mad at America. She brought this on herself! She acts without thinking and upsets the poor queen time and again! I mean, was it really necessary to show the word the diary Maxon had given her as confidential? Was it really necessary to keep kissing Aspen when she was angry at Maxon, even as the sole reason she was at the palace was to love the prince? If I was Maxon I would have married Kriss already! She is kind, compassionate, ladylike, prencesslike blah, blah, bkah.

America is careless and stupid. She has a spirit, sure, which would benefit the wrecked kingdom but...

Aspen is selfless and strong and loves America but he chose to let her GI. He really doesn't have the right to mess with her heart right now that it can get both of them killed!

Maxon is... well a prince obviously. Powerful, a gentleman, handsome, he can provide America with the stars and the moon and give her family a better future. He keeps loving her when doing it is destroying him - and his poor back since his father is brutal.

So, Josey, add these to your list:

9. Murder the king.

10. Brainwash the prince until he kicks Celest out - she's not born to be a princess and she's too antagonistic.

11. Brainwash Aspen until he sees what a stupid idea it is to make out with America while in the palace.

12. Smack America until she is smart enough to not make any more mistakes and then have her marry Maxon.

13. Find a perfect wealthy guy who loves Kriss and have her fall for him - I really like her so make him charming.

I don't really think that Mer deserves Maxon but the book is centered around the Selection and the prince and, since Mer is the main character, if she doesn't end up with him I'm so done. No matter who is better, Maxon or Aspen after everything that's happened it would be annoying if the third book didn't involve America in a white dress in a royal wedding.

Taylor Sipos You are preaching to the choir I so agree

LOL. that list is so tempting. the book was horrible.
it was as dynamic as a week old omlette. i so want to fling america across the room along with her candy floss lovers! morons, the lot of them!
May kiera cass live long enough to realize that her books terrifies old people. its morphine at its best...

Angela M THANK GOD I AM NOT ALONE.

Rachel (APCB Reviews) Some of things that happened in this book really annoyed me. The main problem is America. She is rash and indecisive. She spends most of the book crying and upset. She ruins every moment with Maxon by saying "I need time." He knows that America!! Maxon has been knocked down a few pegs, in my opinion. He is going around with Kriss and Celeste! Kriss is the backup in case America decides to leave but I am still mad that he is with her. Maxon is screwing around with Celeste. That broke my heart. America is so surprised and hurt that Maxon is spending more time with Kriss. Well what do you expect, America?! Because you don't want to spend time with him, he can't spend time with anyone else?! And you are hurt when Maxon is making out with Celeste while you are doing the same with Aspen!? America, you have no right to be upset and mad! Both characters, Maxon and America, need to realize that they belong with each other. America needs to trust Maxon and have more self-confidence. She loves Maxon but she is letting her intimidation of the crown cloud her judgement. I hate all the fighting and angst between America and Maxon in this book. I can not believe that America couldn't think of a philanthropy project. Really?! There are so many ideas and yet she chooses the one thing that will PO the king. If you want to make changes to Illéa, you must have the seat of princess/queen. You can't get that seat if you are enraging the royalty and advisors. You have to be smart right now, America! And removing the castes isn't even a philanthropy project! It is a government issue. And she tells the king that Maxon let her borrow the diary when Maxon explicitly tells her not to tell anyone that she has it. The ending of the second book is exactly like the ending of the first book. I feel like the rebel attacks aren't that serious and fatal. No one important ever dies! The palace just gets messed up and there are messages on the walls. Only two people were eliminated! I feel like we got no where in this book. I feel like the Selection should be over by now. We need to see America and Maxon make changes to Illéa. Does there really have to be a love triangle here? We all know that America is going to come to her senses and choose Maxon. If America isn't with Maxon and if they don't make changes to Illéa, it would totally ruin everything that this series is building towards and I will not view this series the same way. Despite all of my irritations with this book, I can't bare to knock a star off the rating because I am in love with this series, or the idea and premise of this series. America get your head together and get your priorities straight!

I vote for Number 5! I had such hopes for this second book, but halfway through it, I wanted to be part of the rebels and somehow set the palace up in flames!

Rachel wrote: "Some of things that happened in this book really annoyed me. The main problem is America. She is rash and indecisive. She spends most of the book crying and upset. She ruins every moment with Maxon..."

What was her deal? She was such a strong character in the beginning, and then she was turned into this vague imbecile. As I read on, I kept hoping that the America in the first book would come back. But -_- of course not.

The author has a post about why people shouldn't hate Aspen, but it's like "Come on! His role is not even really needed!" I really dislike it when they make a series when a girl has to choose between two guys. It wouldn't be a problem if it was just a few series like this, but now it's ALL OF THEM!

I hope the last book of the series is much more satisfying.

Rachel (APCB Reviews) Yeah. I didn't even know how mad I was at the book until I wrote that rant. I didn't even think. I just typed out everything that really irritated me about this book. I look up, and see this HUGE paragraph. Wow. I had lots of problems with this book.

message 14: by Ashley (new) - added it

Ashley What bugged me the most was America. In the first book, she was a character I loved. Then in this one she came off as whiny and annoying. She wasn't as strong as she was in the first book. Did anyone else feel like she cried in every other chapter? It just got really annoying for me to keep reading. She needs to make up her mind already.

Charlotte Well, I can understand what happened with Maxon. He can't just spend all his time with America. Everyone would question him. But when Aspen came back. HAGBUHBCUCBUSHDBXCUH. I was mad. Maxon is obviously the perfect choice. and she thinks about it when Maxon is doing what hes supposed to, but she doesn't even THINK about what could happen with her when she is with aspen. THAT is what I hated. sometimes america can be so stupid.

Lexi I just finished the book and even though I found the ending very very frustrating I can't wait for the third

Carol M But doesn't rash and indecisive pretty much describe teenage girls?

thank you! I felt like this book didn't go anywhere from the first one and I am also Team Nobody!! They both really annoy me (especailly Maxon)

Yes, but America seemed to have more common sense in the first book... I mean, what she's doing with Aspen, betraying Maxton's trust, her philanthropy project ( of course they need to go but that was NOT the way to go about it ). She just doesn't seem very smart. How can she stay in the palace, unless she's trying to fall in love with Maxton truly, that means giving up Aspen and playing it safe. She wanted to leave in the end, to be with Aspen so she did something crazy to get her two cents worth and be done, but she didn't leave!!! She keeps going back on her choices and it's not going to fair well with her. She has to be loyal to Maxton now and clean up her mess. She was rash in the worst way possible and it to me it seems like this America is worse then the one in the first book; when then her motives were clearer and all arround better.

PREACH IT! America, Maxon, and Aspen better figure their problems with indecisiveness out. I feel like none of them want to make a decision and stick with it. I want the rebels to come and cause a fiasco, maybe kill the king while they are there, and take aspen with them so America finally chooses Maxon.

Tiffany Revilia I was mad mostly at the fact that it took Mer SO DAMN LONG to finally see that Maxon and her were meant to be. That for the love of baby bunnies everywhere she is in love with him and him, her. At the end of the book I felt that it was about damn time she actually fights for him. The girl kept doubting him and all that crap and he went through so much for her I'm just glad she finally sees that they would be amazing together.

Brittany Devlin Rachel wrote: "Some of things that happened in this book really annoyed me. The main problem is America. She is rash and indecisive. She spends most of the book crying and upset. She ruins every moment with Maxon..."

I loved your post and agree with everything you said. And as much as America, Maxon, and Aspen annoy me, I cannot really fault any of them. I mean come on people. If we were in their situation you can't say we all wouldn't do the same things. All three of them are scared, and vulnerable and are protecting their hearts. Maxon clearly loves America but hes afraid she won't choose him. So he has to have a backup plan which is where Kriss comes in. You can't blame him, he has a lot of pressure on him from his dad, and is being televised to the whole country. He is going to be forced to choose a girl whether America chooses him or not. Aspen, broke up with America because he loved her so much. He wanted a better life for her and saw the competition as a means for her to get it. He never dreamed that she would get picked and make it this far in the competition. Everything he has done has been for America. He has sacrificed so much to try to do what was best for her, whether is was what he wanted or not. He never dreamed he would be good enough for her, but then he got into the Army and it gave him hope. He made more money and finally thought that he might be good enough for her. Then he gets stationed at the palace and thinks its fate. He didn't realize America would fall for Maxon. When he finds out she has feeling for both of them, he know he how to man up and tell her how he truly feels or he could loose her forever. If we were in Aspen's shoes could will be that selfless and let the one we love go because he knew they deserved better? I don't think I could. I think I would fight for what I wanted. And then there's America. She was heartbroken when she got sent to live in the palace. She never thought she would fall for Maxon, but slowly but surly he began to piece her heart back together. When she was upset and lonely he was there for her. They became dependent on one another for moral support and for someone to confide in. It will inevitable that they would develop feelings for one another. When she finally starts to admit to herself that she loves Maxon she sees Aspen and it bring back all those old memories. Who hasn't been int his situation once in their lives? Your with someone new and your out and you run into an old lover... tell me it doesn't make you question things. Its only natural that America still has feelings for Aspen. He was her first love and he broke her heart. She afraid that Maxon won't choose her and that she wouldn't make a good queen. Shes afraid that Aspen would break her heart again. She afraid she won't make the right choice. I don't know about you all but if that was me it would take me a while to decide between them as well. I think we should all cut them some slack. They are only trying to protect their hearts from destruction.

Rida Sajid I cant figure out what is wrong with America. How can she stay with Maxon when he clearly states that he is considering Kriss too.

Aggie Pearson Rida wrote "I cant figure out what is wrong with America..."

Still think it is her fault. He basically proposed and she backed out. He said "if you're sure I'll send the rest away" and *big surprise* she was not. So I can't blame him for doubting her after that. She had her chance. He must protect himself somehow, have a fallout plan... But then the fallout plan *Kriss* got as appealing to him as the actual plan and now, just like America, he doesn't know what he wants...

I'm not defending him. Well I am. But I'm just too annoyed at America to care.

Chisom Honestly it was quite annoying. I thought when they officially kicked America out that she would go back home and become a rebel. I really just wanted a change of scenery.

I couldn't say it in a better way. I don't really like the character of America! The whole I-am-in-the-elite situation is making her become dumb...

Mya I was annoyed with the endding and King Clarkson! I felt bad for America but she was the one who made those dessicions.

message 28: by Jaireh (last edited Sep 07, 2014 01:29AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jaireh I was really excited with The Selection Series. But everything changed when I finally read it, especially The Elite. I AM confused what America was thinking. Her decisions and thinking changed really fast.
Thought she was wise and smart, no wonder she stayed because Maxon wanted her to stay. But it's a big NO. She wanted to be the crown princess, but she didn't consider that there will be big sacrifices and understanding her country's situation more.

Most of all... I think why America and Aspen are still meeting, it is because the writer wants to prepare for another complicated situation. I think Maxon, himself will find it out when America is already the crown princess, and he will decide to cast her out or not...

Louise I love the selection series, but I was so angry when I read the second book as well. America thinks too much nonsense. She keeps wondering about whether she should be with Maxon or not, and that is annoying because Maxon is the one whose supposed to choose. If she does't know her heart then she should just leave, let other girls who truly devote themselves to Maxon have him. Anyway, if she loves him a lot, the princess duties shouldn't be a big enought obstacle.

I like America, but she makes me so mad sometimes. She always wondered if Maxon is believable and honest about his love, but if she is cheating with Aspen herself, she has no right to suspect Maxon. If she just wants to be with Aspen, then she should leave the palace already. She can't just cheat like that. She can't switch back and forth just because she wants too, that can hurt Maxon a lot!

I am team Maxon, but he makes me angry too, the time when he was caught in a hallway with Celeste, doing those things. He was enjoying it and smiling. UHGGGGGGG! I almost hated him from then on. If he truly loves America, he shouldn't do that. And he gave the worst excuse ever to America, about wanting to be loved. He could have choose her then and he will be loved forever, but he didn't. I also can't believe how fast America let it drop and forgive him. It's just.....wrong. But then again,America cheated with Aspen too- why are they cheating so much!......It's totally frustrating. I wish Aspen never showed up at the palace, that would have been best.

Jaireh Louise wrote: "I love the selection series, but I was so angry when I read the second book as well. America thinks too much nonsense. She keeps wondering about whether she should be with Maxon or not, and that is..."
*whistles* Yeah, cheating... They are equal. They can be nominated as best actor and actress in Oscars.

Lynne Stringer I found The Elite the least enjoyable of the three books because of America continually flitting between the two of them. I know the second act in a story is supposed be all about complication, but this took it so far I was fed up by the end.

message 32: by M (new)

M I disliked the Elite the most because America acted so weak compared to her old character in the first book and she was so undecisive like Maxon or Aspen I can't choose! I wish Aspen had like decided he liked someone else or America rejected him because the whole love triangle thing is way to complicated on top of the rebel and caste business.
