Xdyj | 127 comments I think currently only about 1/3 of the people in the world are Christians, so it's a very large minority but not quite a majority yet. Also, it seems that those people have never heard of Malaysia.

Also, I just read that survey result. Besides religious groups many respondents also claim that they distrust roma ppl, immigrants from eastern Europe etc. On the other hand, it is an online survey and the sample size is pretty small so I'm not sure how accurate the result is.

To be fair, the place it happened is usually considered one of the rougher places in New York & is known not only for its rich, diverse cultural heritage but also, unfortunately, poverty, unemployment & crimes.

Xdyj | 127 comments IMHO the ruling clergy of that country is so infamous for being reactionary and anti-women that I would not be surprised by stuff like these. I know Muslims who consider the KSA state a traitor of their religion and of the Arab ppl, and there are even some Islamic scholars (esp. many in the Chinese ikhwan movement, which btw predates, and has no relation with the global pan-Islamist political party of the same name) that ruled the whole ulema of that country unislamic & banned their followers from worshiping in any Saudi-runned mosques. Personally I don't think stating "something is endorsed/against a certain religion" without context makes much sense because the texts of any major faith always have the potential of different interpretations. I'm pretty sure that if I want to, and given enough time, I can find some kind of justification as well as opposition of that punishment from some hadith. The interpretations of any faith, despite what their followers would tell you, will inevitably be different in different places or times, and imho sweeping statements like "something is/is not endorsed by some religion" tend to be simplistic and ahistoric.

Som Lia wrote: "That's not what I meant, I meant that I wanted to read the Q'uran and see my own interp of it. Of course books are open to interpretation, Holy or no, but it is the interpretation of certain groups..."

Think there is no perception or interpretation in the 'holy books' the authors' sense of writing should only count, which often doesn't; that's why all these controversies take place. One's personal interpretation of holy books mostly represents the radical view of it (as nitpicking, going deep for obtaining root answers to protect the pedestal of religious supremacy, to counter atheists etc). Communal conflicts are mostly based on the radical religious views as they see the holy book open for interpretations and malleable for manipulations. It's a very sensitive issue. What d'you think?

Xdyj | 127 comments @Lia: Sorry I didn't meant I disagree with you. And I do think that ppl should all read more about different religious traditions.

The Quran is the primary, but not the sole source of traditional Islamic laws. Islamic laws come from the Quran as well as prophetic tradition (Sunnah) as recorded in Hadiths, and sometimes also consensus (ijma), analogy, local tradition etc. There are a few Muslims who are fed up by theologians & only recognize the authority of Quran however they're often considered apostates by other more traditional Muslims.

The authors of those books are dead or somehow left this world. You can not resurrect them to interrogate them about their original intentions. So all we have and all we will ever have are just plain interpretations.

message 56: by Som (new)

Som ^^Of course they are dead; but the scholastic interpretation of tangible proof and of how it'd be interpreted (evolved testament) separates the radicals from true (subjective?) followers; religious studies has its evidences; viz: a random book of religion and philosophy. All that makes the religion 'A religion of good and evil' at the same time. Terrorism is based on the book's contextual misinterpreted preaches is a matter of ignorance...i.e, No plain/generic interpretation is acceptable as it mostly breaks the evil-good continuum by means of overlapping..

Evan (sampsom) | 578 comments I'm not American and I don't study politics so my interpretation of this may be wrong.

But I see it as pointless. 800,000 people aren't going to work and many of them will not be paid. It is putting the American Infrastructure on hold. It is gonna back clog the economy.
Obamacare to me would be beneficial. It is similar in ways to the U.K with the NHS which to me is one of the most useful things.

Xdyj | 127 comments Idk why some American politicians dislike universal healthcare so much. Many European countries have had it for years & even middle-income countries like Mexico & Thailand have it.

Evan (sampsom) | 578 comments Interesting.

We have something similar called Quorn. It's a meat substitute and to be honest I can't tell the difference. For about four years I was being fed it without knowing it wasn't real meat. It tastes just as good and is healthier too.

My school chaplain was like that. Last year he spent an assembly telling us how you shouldn't celebrate Halloween as it is a mockery of all hallows day. He started shouting and being all grumpy and stuff. It wasn't nice.

Evan (sampsom) | 578 comments I heard about this on the news and was like omg!! It's sounded bad, apparently 3 people died assuming more! Hope it goes quickly and your safe!

Som How are things at your place Lia? Heard that typhoon is more ruthless than any others... ):

Recently we faced a similar situation; I charged everything that had to be charged, bought food for a week and bought an extra battery for the power inverter....glad I did these lol

Evan (sampsom) | 578 comments I heard some horrible things on the News this morning, people in the Philippines screaming for help and stuff, it was horrible. Extremely disturbing.

People will do that T.V stealing. The London Riots a few years ago started as a protest to a man being shot by the police but ended up in T.Vs being stolen, family businesses (that are like 4th generation) being burnt down.

message 71: by Som (new)

Som It's gruesome indeed. Really saddening.. ):

(Life is hard as it is; on top of that these type of nature's fury is uncalled for...)
