Any questions/concerns about the group can be asked here :-)

message 2: by Jo (new)

Jo (new_romantic) I can't seem to join the group... But I can comment on threads and what not... I'm confused

No you're a member all right: see in the member page: you're the third at the momento - the firsts are those online now

message 5: by Bionic Jean (last edited Aug 12, 2013 03:28AM) (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I'd love to join in on Drood but have so many books on the go at the moment, and also promised to read Vanity Fair...I'll probably be a bit late joining in. So my question is:

Will the thread for the bi-monthly "Classic read" stay open for the full 2 months, or will it be closed at the end of the first month when the other bi-monthly "Theme challenge" starts up?

Thanks :)

message 6: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments Hi Jean,

The threads for all the group reads will stay open at the end for those who are late joining in - so there's no problem there.

Both "The Sea" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" run from August through to the end of October - as August is already part way through, we thought it would be easier for everyone!

Plenty of time to read it Jean! I'm also starting it not before the 10th of september, when I'll be back from the seaside!

message 8: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) That's great to hear, thank you Shirley and Laura. I'm so pleased the threads will stay open. I just wondered if you would be alternating very strictly.

Great name for the group, by the way. Nice and snappy; memorable and to the point. Also ensures it will come very near the top of any alphabetical list!

I was wondering if you were going to bring the book lists over? They were my favourite part of TPOBAB, I understand if you're not doing it but I thought there was no harm in asking.

I think not, as Kirsty developed those. I love lists so I also found them a favorite part of Perks. We could start our own section though. I was thinking about that just an hour ago as I was going through the links for the Sea Theme Read...

Ah, I see. I think the main reason I loved them were because they were quite unique but you were learning a lot about other members and their reading tastes.

I love lists a lot, therefore I'd love to have some NEW ones here!!!

message 13: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 206 comments Ladies, are you planning on opening a thread about science books?
The reason for my asking is because the only useful comment I've ever made on Perks was about suggestions for neuroscience books, and I would like to transfer it here somehow.

And yes please, let's do lists :)

I don't know if a nonfiction section is planned. In the meantime though, you could make your own thread under personal challenges and copy it to there. It isn't ideal but at least your work could be saved that way.

Leslie, thanks for the suggestion, I actually did not notice that there is no non-fiction section (I'm a bit burnt out!).
I think I'll just save it somewhere on my pc and add it if and when the science thread will be created

I was thinking as a way to replace the book lists we could post some questions for discussion, for example 'If you could pick any three authors dead or alive to dine with, who would they be'
'Which fictional character would you most like to be stranded on a desert island with?'

What do you all think?

message 18: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments @ Elisa, I too have been thinking about a seperate non-fiction section. Give us some time, we'll mull it over with Rowena so for the mean-time Leslie's suggestion is great, to allow you to hold on to your info. (and neuroscience sounds like a great theme for another non-fiction group read ;)

@Alannah - that is a good idea. It could be a 'Just for Fun' section or something. I'll put a message on the Mods Discussion Thread and see what the others think :-)

I actually have a great book meme for that. However, I just started the book list section & called it "What Have You Read?"

message 24: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I have a question. Are u guys going to have a halloween read for october? I was just curious because author neil gaiman introduced the all hallows read reading challenge a few years ago where he reccomended books by stephen king, clive barker, and more to read for halloween. Last year I read something wicked this way comes by ray bradbury as my all hallows read and it was a pretty good read. So I was just curious. Great group and glad I joined. Reading rocks! Thanks. Amber

message 25: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Hey Amber, as of now we hadn't thought of a halloween read as such, but we've been discussing the idea of seasonal challenges.
I am not sure if there is anything planned for Halloween (Becca and Leslie are our challenge-experts), but we'll mull it over and let you know.

Very glad you are enjoying the group!

Leslie | 16369 comments A Halloween challenge would fit in with the holiday & seasonal challenges Becca was discussing. Maybe something as simple as read one scary book during the month of October...

With regard to a seasonal Halloween challenge, I will definitely be setting one up :-) Funnily enough, it would be probably be 'scary books' ha! Great minds think alike :-) The beauty of the challenge 'box' thing is you can challenge yourself to read as many books as you like and when it gets added to the corresponding shelf (you create one when you join the challenge) it automatically tallies up your total. The only problem I've noticed is that it doesn't show up on the app. If that would be too problematic, I could set it up as a thread.

Leslie | 16369 comments Alannah wrote: "I was wondering for the Past Posts folders, will you be putting in any threads that haven't been posted in in a while?"

My feeling is that it would depend on what the topic is - some things like the book lists might still be of interest to a new member even if they have been quiet for a while. Why? Do you think we should?

Hi Alannah, I was wondering about that too. Maybe a seperate archive thread for readalongs and group reads, once the conversations have seized, where they could maybe be moved after a certain time has passed and late-comers aren't likely to be expected. Leaving them all in the respective folders will get very crowded once we're a year or two into AAB. I think we'll have to have a little brainstorm about this.

Are you asking because of the nomination threads are being frozen and moved once the winner is crowned? Would you personally prefer to keep them open for longer for nomination-related chit-chat?

message 36: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I think the group reads should be archived after the month is over, in a separate "past group reads" folder, so they are easy to find.

The readalongs are slightly different, as they are not necessarily set up by the moderators, and don't always have a time frame, however, they probably need to be tidied away at some point. The question is, how long do we leave it? Maybe if there have been no more comments after a month, they could be archived?

As regards the nomination threads and sign up threads, I think they need to be archived quite swiftly, to avoid confusion.

Talking of sign up threads, it's our first week of Monday Poems and My Reading Journey next week!! I'm really looking forward to it!

That is what I was thinking, we don't have to start moving threads right now as we are still in our first month. Hopefully six months down the line but if people still want to access them they will be in the Past Posts folder.

message 41: by amber (last edited Sep 09, 2013 01:11PM) (new)

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 371 comments I was thinking that as the BOM non-fiction has a movie adaptation. What do the mods think of setting up a thread to discuss it as well?

message 42: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Hey Amber, my instinct is that there is room for it to be discussed in the thread for the book itself, since I assume it would be about comparing the book to the movie, but if there proves to be a a big interest in that discussion we could then still play it by ear and open a new thread for the comparison of the two. That mightn't be a bad idea at all.
Does that sound alright to you?

message 43: by amber (new)

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 371 comments That sounds good Jenny.
The reason I was thinking of making it a thread unto itself is because I know a lot of people really hate movies based on books and wondered if they would feel it was cluttering up the thread if people were posting about the movie there.

That looks interesting, Jenny. I wonder if there's any way of linking to this in this group. Eg A new group of discussions, with each week a thread with a link to the relevant article and then we can comment if we've read it, discuss alternative books by the author etc etc. I wonder if there will be any books that none of us have read?

Just reposted this on the Ask the Moderators thread.

message 45: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I like the idea Gill! I believe the first essay is being posted tomorrow, we could in fact have a board discussing it week by week. I'd happily take care of it.
