Breige (breigeflynn) | 87 comments I know it's a bit early to suggest an idea for the next book to read but I thought that this might be a good idea. Banned Book Week runs from 22nd to 28th September, to raise awareness of books that people try to ban from libraries and school for a number of reasons. I found a great list of 40 banned books. a lot of cross over from the BBC Big Read granted but I think it might be a fun idea to vote and discuss which book to pick of banned book week and then read it after? Just an idea

I think this is a great idea Breige - who agrees?

Karen | 120 comments I've read 10 of the so-called banned books, and really enjoyed them. Salman Rushdie summed it up perfectly in an interview with the Independent newspaper (full link on Lush Forum in the Library section)

If you don't want to read a book, don't read it. If you start reading a book and you don't like it, you always have the option of shutting it and at this point it loses its capacity to offend you.

Love it! I am scratching my head at why James and the giant peach would be banned, amongst others!

That is a good quote!

Jo, here's a link that describes why a book has been banned or challenged, it has James and the Giant Peach on it

Sounds interesting!

There are some great books on that list - count me in!

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Totally up for this. Will hopefully finish Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett by then :-)

message 9: by Liz (new)

Liz | 50 comments Sounds good! Must finish/start Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett too!

We've missed the week but we can still go ahead as there seems to be interest - shall I start a nominations thread?

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I forgot about this. I'm still up for it though.

message 12: by Breige (new)

Breige (breigeflynn) | 87 comments I'm SO SO sorry I forgot about this, it was in the middle of a hectic part of last year (my Dad was in hospital at the other side of the country, Mum with him and I looking after my siblings. And I was also trying to get organized for a move overseas to England!). I feel so bad for missing this :(

No worries. I hope your dad is well (?). I'm hoping we can get the group more active and get some new members from the lush forum since the library thread is so interesting. If you have the time start a voting thread :) It's a great idea.

Hope your dad is ok Breige. I didn't go ahead with nominations as it seemed so quiet, not from you from everyone but we can pick this up again if there's interest.

message 15: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirkel) | 1162 comments Mod
Even if only a few of us commit to reading a book it would be a start:)

Thank you ladies, Dad is doing much better at the moment. I don't mind if this idea is picked up now or if we wait again until next banned book month, though I do kinda like the idea of reading banned books during that month!

Kirsty (kirkel) | 1162 comments Mod
Start a thread and let's aim for book which has broad appeal. Great to have you on board Breige:)

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Are we still doing this? I am trying to find more time for reading. I'm sure it must help me in some way while I'm re-taking GCSE English.

message 19: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
Yep, let's do it seeing as it's banned book week again soon. Any that jumped out at you as possible reads?

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I'm going to go back & look again, as it's been a while ;)

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I don't know if I have the right list? Jumping out at me are - In cold blood - Truman Capote, As I lay dying - William Faulkner & For whom the bell tolls - Ernest Hemmingway. Anyone else have any thoughts?

message 22: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
Is anyone else still up for this? I might message people and see in case they're not checking back often

message 23: by Liz (new)

Liz | 50 comments I'd be interested in Moll Flanders, Gulliver's travels, Madame Bovary, Steinbeck - all books I've heard of but never read (unabridged) :-)

message 24: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
I posted it in the wrong section (it's been a while since I did a noms thread!) but I can't be bothered to do another one :0
So get nominating purlease :)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
I've included books mentioned on here in the poll which is now open, please get voting x

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I can't see the poll :-(

message 28: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
It's showing for me in the poll section, I've sent you an invite to it. I hope it's working properly?

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
sorry Jo. I found it, just had to go on the website. I was on Android app :-)

message 30: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
I always use the website because the app is much more difficult to use I find :)

We have a three way tie between Beloved, the Color Purple and The Handmaids Tale. I'm not sure what to do now?

message 32: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (scheherazade) | 364 comments Mod
I read The Handmaid's Tale for A-Level, and I enjoyed it -- it made me seek out more Margaret Atwood! I've read Beloved also, but I struggled more with that. The Color Purple I've not read, but I'd like to.

A tie-break vote, maybe? I'm not sure how I missed the first one. I didn't get any notifications :(

message 33: by Liz (new)

Liz | 50 comments I haven't voted (can't find the poll) and I've just bought the Handmaid's Tale..?

message 34: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
I didn't send out a general notification as out of all 100 odd members only maybe 5or 6 of us ever participate. I'll do a tie break poll and send out a message to everyone

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I would do a poll for the three Jo. I can't remember what I voted for :O

message 36: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
Just done it :)

message 37: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
The Handmaid's Tale is the winner, shall we start whenever everyone has a copy?

message 38: by Liz (new)

Liz | 50 comments Great I'll dig mine out!

message 39: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
I am on a waiting list to get it from the library! Every single copy in Cambridgeshire is out on loan :0
I may have to break my 'no buying any more books until I've read what I've got' promise and see if I can get a secondhand one cheap

message 40: by Liz (new)

Liz | 50 comments Oh I didn't know you were in Cambs! Me too!

message 41: by Breige (new)

Breige (breigeflynn) | 87 comments I voted on both polls but my choice didn't win :( I read The Handmaid's Tale last year and don't have time or interest to reread it but I will join in discussions! :) (I feel crappy saying that seeing as this whole banned books thing was my idea in first place but it's a case of too many books, not enough time!)

message 42: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (pageplucker) | 230 comments Mod
I have a copy already and can start as soon as I've finished my current read (it's the new Sarah Waters and it's really good!)

message 43: by Jo (new)

Jo | 592 comments Mod
That's a shame Breige, at least you can join the chat hopefully. 7 people voted for it so hopefully there will be some discussion.

Liz, you didn't take all the copies out of the libraries did you?! ;)

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (scheherazade) | 364 comments Mod
I already have a copy, so I'm in when everyone else is ready :)

message 45: by Liz (new)

Liz | 50 comments Ha ha no Jo, but last time I was in a queue in Central Library I got the book surprisingly fast :-)

message 46: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (smiley_laydee) | 92 comments Do we start reading now? lol. So out of practice!

Yes I think so, I may be a bit behind you but will catch up. I'll start a discussion thread
