Dan (TheGreatBeast) So October's read is going to be an H.G. Wells novel. Either cast a vote or make a nomination. I will edit this post to add nominations. The top 4 will be included in the October poll.

The Invisible Man
The War of the Worlds
The First Men in the Moon
The Island of Dr. Moreau
The Time Machine
Tales of Space and Time (or other H.G. Wells Short story collections)

Nicole Sanchez (tarrish) | 5 comments War of the Worlds

Buck (spectru) | 900 comments I recently read The War of the Worlds, so I'd prefer any of the others. The Time Machine appeals.

When will the poll open and close?

message 6: by Dan (new)

Dan (TheGreatBeast) Sorry forgot to include that. Nominations end when September begins. The poll will last from the 1st to the 20th.

Tabby Shiflett War of the Worlds

message 8: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 22 comments I'd like to suggest/nominate a group of three or four short stories instead of a longer read.

say - The Country of the Blind, The Crystal Egg, The Star, A Story of the Stone Age

Alternatively, this could be a suggestion to toss around for November. I enjoy short stories. If not, I'd probably vote (when voting opens) for War Of The Worlds

message 9: by Tabby (new)

Tabby Shiflett Ooh, yes. Short stories.

message 10: by Scott (new)

Scott | 1 comments My vote is either War of the Worlds, or The First Men in the Moon.

message 11: by Pickle (new)

Pickle | 46 comments The Invisible Man

message 12: by Dan (new)

Dan (TheGreatBeast) One vote each. I added the short story collections to the first post, if you want to nominate one for the poll please do.

message 13: by Alex (last edited Aug 26, 2013 07:08AM) (new)

Alex | 34 comments Might be better to nominate Tales of Space and Time and read the three short stories the book has (The Crystal Egg, The Star and A Story of the Stone Age) it also contains two novellas (A Story of the Days to Come and The Man Who Could Work Miracles). I'll nominate The Time Machine.

message 14: by Michael (new)

Michael Robertson (michael2402) War of the Worlds or The Invisible Man

Jeff Parker (jparker1732) | 9 comments Since I have not ready any of the Short Stories I like that idea.

I had thought that they were short story compilations, the original post has been edited.

The Country of the Blind and Other Selected Stories, Selected Stories and Best Science Fiction Stories of H. G. Wells are more widely available in its physical format. The Penguins Classics has a nice cover.

Theresa | 22 comments It doesn't matter to me which short stories we read, I've read a number of them already. One way or the other, I think, if we do go with short stories (or even if we don't) The Star is not to be missed. It is very short and one of his best.

message 19: by Dan (new)

Dan (TheGreatBeast) Duely noted. Even if short stories are not suggest nothing stops us from having a quick read, it can be found free online.
Is this the full story?:

message 20: by Dawn (last edited Aug 29, 2013 06:54AM) (new)

Dawn I'd also like to read The Island of Dr. Moreau. I've read quite a few of the other Wells books, some more than once. I can't recall whether or not I've read this one. If I have, it's only been once.

message 21: by David (new)

David Haverstick | 14 comments I've read most of the "major" Wells works. Wouldn't mind reading things again though. I don't have anything else to nominate except something quirky like When the Sleeper Wakes.

message 22: by Sean (new)

Sean Leas (seanleas) | 6 comments As I also have read a large swathe of Wells fine work. That being said, I'd like to throw In the Days of the Comet in to the mix.

message 23: by Dan (new)

Dan (TheGreatBeast) The results:
Short Stories: 4
War of the Worlds: 4
The Time Machine: 3
The Island of Dr. Moreau: 2
The Invisible Man: 2
First Men in the Moon: 1
In The Days of the Comet: 1

We have a tie for number 4 so I flipped a coin and Island of Dr. Moreau won out. Polls open tomorrow, probably around midnight.
