Danine (dulcemea) What series and/or author do you drop everything and read from cover to cover in one sitting when you get a new one?

Great question! Thanks Mary Todd. Looking forward to reading the responses.

message 2: by Aprile (new)

Aprile (aprileb) Harry Potter without a doubt. I read the first four (that was when I got on the bandwagon) in one week, and the rest of them I read the day it came out.

I actually got the 7th at the midnight release and read it through the night. Was done around 6:30am when I crawled into bed bawling and woke up my hubby LOL

message 3: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (diva2416) Authors: Jennifer Weiner, Sophie Kinsella & Augusten Burroughs.

Dropped everything to read the last 2 Harry Potter books as well.

message 4: by KrisT (new)

KrisT About the only author that I can sit and read a book from often in one sitting is James Patterson. Any of his books because he writes them so flowing and easy short read chapters. I hate to say it but I read them so quick I never buy them because those few hours of reading doesn't make it worth the expense to buy it since they read that fast!

message 5: by Patricia (new)

Patricia It used to be John Grisham but I don't really have a favorite author now.

message 6: by Faye (new)

Faye | 673 comments Mod
Evanovich Janet's Stephanie Plum series. You'll probably read it in one sitting, but it's guaranteed fun.

Also, of course Harry Potter.

message 7: by Leighann (new)

Leighann (zhelenstilo) I did that with the later Harry Potter books (5, 6, and 7) for sure. It was only those ones because I got into the series after book 4 came out, but before book 5.

And I tend to drop everything when I find any new (to me) book by Carol Berg. There's just something about her stories that I absolutely love. ^_^ Those books don't end up being single-sitting reads, but they definitely take precedence over anything else I'm reading at the time.

message 8: by Kourtney (new)

Kourtney (familywithbooks) It would have to be Sophie Kinsella and Sarah Mlynowski. I got into Harry Potter right before book 7 came out so I dropped everything for only book 7, but since I was only in the middle of book 5 it felt like forever until I could read the end! But I got sad that the story ended there...

message 9: by Random (new)

Random (rand0m1s) I tend to do that with Catherine Asaro's Skolian Empire series. A new book pretty much guarantees I won't be getting any sleep. :)

message 10: by Cam (new)

Cam Nora Robert's - J.D. Robb In Death series is like quicksand for me. The more I fight the urge, the more it sucks me in. I'm more than happy to slot the two new books added to the series every year into my reading list. Even if two weeks later my memory like a gold fish can't tell one book from the next.

message 11: by Carrie (last edited May 23, 2009 09:12AM) (new)

Carrie Add another voice to those saying Harry Potter. I couldn't be reached until I'd finished the books. Aside from J.K. Rowling, the others I read usually in one go are Dan Brown (Da Vinci Code especially...don't judge a book by it's movie) and Jasper Fforde. I did that too with Laurie Viera Rigler's first book, and I'm waiting to see if it will be the same when her next comes out.

message 12: by Maphead (new)

Maphead | 295 comments Probably Bart Ehrman the religion writer from the University of North Carolina.

message 13: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 82 comments Anything by Sopie Kinsella, the Hamish McBeth series and the Agatha Raisin series both by M.C. Beaton would be my choices. They are all entertaining without having to think too much. Great Beach reads!
Other than that I like to savor the other books I read.

I love the Harry Potter books, but read everyone of them to my DD starting when the first book came out when DD was about 5 years old. We were in Paris when the last book came out three years ago and hired a car to take us to an English Bookstore at midnight. The most expensive book we have ever bought! ;) We ended up with our pics on the bookstores website and were interviewed by someone from the London Times (never made it in any article that we could find):(

message 14: by librarian4Him02 (new)

librarian4Him02 | 308 comments I read books six and seven of Harry Potter almost all in one sitting. Had to stop for things like sleep (never have been able to pull an all nighter) and church.

I will probably makes plans to read Dan Brown's newest in one sitting when it comes out. His books are good "escape" books for me even if all the facts aren't right and the theories are controversial.

I might possibly read Jodi Piccoult's latest in one sitting if I get around to placing a hold on it from the library. I've read enough of hers that the plots are starting to be too formulaic for my tastes.

Oh, I will also give my full attention to anything John Green writes in future.

Molly | 330 comments Carrie wrote: "don't judge a book by it's movie..."

I love that statement! Sooo true most of the time. I totally agree with Dan Brown's books - they suck you right in and are fun even though totally far fetched - but isn't most fiction after all?

message 16: by Fran (new)

Fran Smith (mfran) | 352 comments I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Outlander series. I've read those as they've come out and picking one up is liking running into old friends. Can't wait for the next.

message 17: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 345 comments The last two Harry Potter books. I had just started to enjoy reading so I had never read any of the Harry Potter books but saw all the movies. I thought that I would just see the 5th movie when it came out and read the last two, which is what I did. I just finished reading the first five and wish I would have read them before the last two.

Also the Darkest Powers series by . Kelly Armstrong (The Summoning and The Awakening)

Carrie Molly wrote: I totally agree with Dan Brown's books - they suck you right in and are fun even though t..."

I had an English teacher back in the day that liked to use the phrase, "Willingly suspend your disbelief" in reference to anything, especially book or movie. If a novel can't make me do that, regardless of how far-fetched it is, I find I don't enjoy it as much. Dan Brown's books do that for me, so I really don't care how incorrect they are. Like Librarianforhim said, it's good 'escape' material.

Ed (ejhahn) | 235 comments Fran wrote: "I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Outlander series. I've read those as they've come out and picking one up is liking running into old friends. Can't wait for the next."

What is it about the Outlander Series that generates such passion?

message 20: by Ed (new)

Ed (ejhahn) | 235 comments I will drop everything to read the next book in the Richard Sharpe Series by Bernard Cornwell.

message 21: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) I have a hard time reading anything in one sitting, but the authors I can't wait to release new books and rush out to buy are Janet Evanovich and Michael Connelly. Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series are hard to put down and lol funny. Sometimes after I rush out to buy her newest release I'll hold onto it for a few days or weeks waiting for the perfect day to savor it. The same with Connelly's books. I don't want any interruption when I start his. He's hands down my all-time favorite. I'll be rushing out tomorrow to pick up The Scarecrow..........can't wait!

message 22: by Valerie (new)

Valerie I recently dropped everything to read the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. The last book, City of Glass, was so good I stayed up late through the night to finish it.

message 23: by Carol (new)

Carol It's been several years since I read a book straight through and that was The Scarlet Thread by Francine Rivers. I always get the new hardcovers by Sharon Kay Penman and Maeve Binchy.

message 24: by Tina (last edited May 25, 2009 06:32PM) (new)

Tina Not necessarily series, but authors I will drop everything to read are Michael Crichton (RIP), Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (just finished their latest Cemetery Dance), and Tracy Chevalier. Life is a little too hectic for me to read anything in one sitting, though. I can only do that when I'm on vacation at the beach.

message 25: by Deb (new)

Deb JK Rowling, Patricia Cornwell and the great Preston/Child duo (I am going to take Cemetery Dance with me on vacation in a week can't wait!)

message 26: by Chriss (new)

Chriss (chriss68) | 33 comments Most recently, it's been the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. I need a little escapist fluff now and then to de-stress.

message 27: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) Sookie Stackhouse, Sue Grafton, and anything by Stewart O'Nan

message 28: by Kirsta (new)

Kirsta (kb-reads) I will read the book #2 in the Millenium series by Stieg Larson as soon as it comes out.

message 29: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) I rushed out on Tuesday to buy Michael Connelly's, The Scarecrow. I devoured it on Wednesday. Now, I have to wait until October for his release of Nine Dragons.

message 30: by Keziah (new)

Keziah (keziahwallis) I find it really hard to stop reading any book that is interesting me, but for George R.R. Martin I called in sick so that I could finish his last book in peace, and I will probably take the day off work to read the next one!

message 31: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Chriss wrote: "Most recently, it's been the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. I need a little escapist fluff now and then to de-stress."

I'm reading the first Sookie Stackhouse book at the moment and I can already tell this is one of those series where I'm going to have to read them all right away! I'll definitely be postponing other books to read this series.

message 32: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) I've read all nine of the Sookie books since the beginning of this year...they're so good!

message 33: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) I just bought the first Sookie book...can't wait to start it!

message 34: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) Let me know what you think...I'm always happy to talk about that series. Have you seen TRUE BLOOD, the HBO series based on the books? Its great and the second season starts June 14th!

message 35: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) I've only caught one episode. I hope to watch the first series On Demand over the summer.

message 36: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) I'm DVRing them starting June 4th (I think...somewhere around there) and refreshing my memory before S2 begins. Hope you like it!

message 37: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) Hi, I'm new! lol

I would have to say Harry Potter. When I got the last book I sat in my room for 8 hours straight and read the entire book. I couldn't put it down. Unfortunately that means I missed a lot of what happened so now I'm going to re-read them. :)

message 38: by Becky (last edited Jun 09, 2009 12:33PM) (new)

Becky | 36 comments Definitely Terry Pratchett. And just today I found out that Diana Wynne Jones put out a sequel to Howl's Moving Castle a full YEAR ago, and we had it at my library, so now I know what I'm doing tonight...Lol. I also love George R.R. Martin, but honestly don't think I could finish a whole one in one sitting. Great question, by the way. :)

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Most definately the Harry Potter Books was that for me. The Chronicles of Narnia books as well as the Hunger games book and although I hate to admit it the twilight series.

Oh also the Eragon series and Charline Harris's Souther vampire series.

message 40: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 52 comments Michelle wrote: "I've read all nine of the Sookie books since the beginning of this year...they're so good! "

I read them all this year too and I LOVE the True Blood series on HBO!!

message 41: by Heathermomo (new)

Heathermomo I re-read the whole Outlanderseries by Diana Gabaldon every time e new one came out - but book 7 An Echo in the Bone truly disappointed me. I was glad I borrowed it from the library and didn't buy it... having said that I'll probably borrow no 8 when it comes out (and I'm sure I'll regret it)
Also the The Clan of the Cave Bear series by Jean M. Auel I'll probably have a mammoth re-read (no pun intended) before getting The Land of Painted Caves

message 42: by Heathermomo (new)

Heathermomo Of course in my above comment I forgot my main obsession - Terry Pratchett's Discworld Series. It's a good job there's so many of them because for about 4 years now they've been my comfort blanket and I read a couple of pages every night before I sleep! (my dad became really ill about that time and the discworld has helped me through it) I'm sure I could give them up any time...

So whenever a new one comes out I totally devour it, re-read it and then add it to the comfort blanket pile :)

message 43: by Morgan (new)

Morgan (morgzsydney) Pretty Little Liars!
