After discovering the Vorkosigan Saga, Snow Crash, The Culture
Series, The Expanse Trilogy and rereading The Forever War I'm trying to
find more Science Fiction novels that combine exciting action with
smart/smartly executed story telling. Now to clear things up, by
"action" I don't necessarily mean Military Sci-Fi(although those
shouldn't be excluded) I'd like more variety like cyberpunk or present
based science fiction.

I enjoy some of John Ringo's stuff. Try The Last Centurion, the Vorpal Blade series, or the Troy Rising series starting with Live Free or Die. (Sorry doing this from my phone. Can't tag books/authors).

My Space Opera favorites are:
Startide Rising by David Brin
Reap the Wild Wind by Julie E. czerneda
Fleet of Worlds by Larry Niven & Edward M. Lerner

I also think Once a Hero by Elizabeth Moon will fit your bill.

You might like The Forever Hero by L.E. Modesitt Jr.. It's a trilogy republished as one book. He's written some other excellent action SF, if you like his style. He's also written a lot of fantasy that I like. His Recluse series is the best known.

The trilogy as one book brings up another, an oldie but a goodie, the Deathworld Trilogy by Harry Harrison. They're a lot of fun, a lot like the early Stainless Steel Rat books. Non stop action with a lot of humor.
