Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1126 comments I have been struggling with the amount of tiem my library takes to get some of my books. I also don't like the fact that with inter-library loan you only get two weeks instead of three with a book. How do you feel about the speed with your library gets the books you request?

Rachel My library is pretty good about stuff like that. Wherever your book comes from, you get it for 3 weeks and can renew it twice as long as it's not on hold by someone else. Some books take a while to get in if it's really new or really popular.

Rebecca My library does great with but it depends on how popular the book and if the author is local usually makes our hold times here longer. I am really into New Adult and I can't find any of it here. I am sure being in a religious community has a lot to do with that.

I wonder too if is so popular libraries would have a hard time keeping up with with rapid changes of titles and popularity.

Melissa | 127 comments Rachel it's nice you get the same limits wherever the book comes from. My library gets the books usually in a week or less but the limits are set by the lending library, so I may get 2 or 3 weeks and 1 or 2 renewals.

Yes, well, there are a bunch of libraries in our lending system. All the ones in our county and two other counties. :) I suppose if I actually asked the librarian to see if I could request a book from a library outside the Tri-County system, the guidelines might be a bit different. I've never done that though.

Sarah (sarahe35) The length of time it takes me to get a book I've requested varies. I've had some come in quickly, one week or so after requested, some have taken forever! Like others have said though, I think it depends on how far its coming from & if it's a hot title or not. It seem like the time period I get to keep them has varied as well, so I think the lending library must set that. I usually don't have trouble renewing if I need to.

AlegnaB † (alegnab) My library is usually quick. I reserve things before most of my weekly trips, and as long as I take into account which branch the item is at and the item isn't checked out by another patron, the item will usually be waiting for me when I get to the library. If the item is at the library I visit, I can usually reserve it the day before. If it's at the other branch in our system, I usually try to reserve it at least three days before I go to the library. My library will hold items for seven days. Patrons can have 15 holds per library card, and since my family has four (we used to have six), I can reserve lots of items -- and have often done that since we're a homeschooling family and check out oodles of books. The librarians are usually surprised if I only have a few holds. I always look in the online catalog and write down the number of holds per card before going to the checkout so the librarian won't have to look at all of my family's accounts to make sure she gives me all my holds.

We get checkouts of four weeks on books and one week on DVDs, with two possible renewals if nobody requests the item. For ebooks, the checkouts are 1, 2 or 3 weeks, depending on what length the patron sets under his account, and I don't think we can renew. We can have four ebooks at a time.

There is only one form to fill out to request an item. There's a section regarding interlibrary loan, and the patron checks either "Okay to ILL" or "Do not ILL." I usually check the don't block. Usually the library will buy whatever I want. It takes a few weeks to get the item because it has to be purchased and then cataloged in the system. I've only done interlibrary loans a few times in the 18 years or so that I've been using my current library. I don't like the shorter checkout time and (sometimes?) lack of ability to renew, so I usually just don't do ILL. There is rarely a book that I want to read so bad that I want to bother with ILL. So, I don't have any idea how long it takes, on average, to get a book through ILL.

I am very patient. I have no problem waiting months, or even a year or more, for an item at the library, unless it's for whatever we're studying in our homeschool (and I never use ILL for that). There are always plenty more books I can read while I'm waiting for a particular book.
