I wonder too if is so popular libraries would have a hard time keeping up with with rapid changes of titles and popularity.

Yes, well, there are a bunch of libraries in our lending system. All the ones in our county and two other counties. :) I suppose if I actually asked the librarian to see if I could request a book from a library outside the Tri-County system, the guidelines might be a bit different. I've never done that though.

We get checkouts of four weeks on books and one week on DVDs, with two possible renewals if nobody requests the item. For ebooks, the checkouts are 1, 2 or 3 weeks, depending on what length the patron sets under his account, and I don't think we can renew. We can have four ebooks at a time.
There is only one form to fill out to request an item. There's a section regarding interlibrary loan, and the patron checks either "Okay to ILL" or "Do not ILL." I usually check the don't block. Usually the library will buy whatever I want. It takes a few weeks to get the item because it has to be purchased and then cataloged in the system. I've only done interlibrary loans a few times in the 18 years or so that I've been using my current library. I don't like the shorter checkout time and (sometimes?) lack of ability to renew, so I usually just don't do ILL. There is rarely a book that I want to read so bad that I want to bother with ILL. So, I don't have any idea how long it takes, on average, to get a book through ILL.
I am very patient. I have no problem waiting months, or even a year or more, for an item at the library, unless it's for whatever we're studying in our homeschool (and I never use ILL for that). There are always plenty more books I can read while I'm waiting for a particular book.
