Sarah I've just finished Part 2.

Part 2 is told in third person like the first part but is now focusing on the female Mayor Jahns. As the omnibus edition, I think this shift works fine but I think if I had read the separates this change would have felt strange as Part 2 is very different to Part 1. Would love to hear what your thoughts are on the separate parts making up the whole and whether you think reading them separately or all together would change your reading experience at all. I'm personally very pleased to be reading them all together.

So Chapter 8 and 9 starts the journey down the Silo to recruit a new Sheriff. The description of the descent for Jahns and Marnes really gives a sense of the size of the Silo - it took them 2 hours to descend 20 floors! I'm imagining the stairs spiralling down around the edge of the circular Silo - How are you seeing it?

What I find strange is how little the people in the Silo are willing to travel up and down to visit relatives or see the "view" or just for a change. I get that it is vast but considering how confined they are I'd have thought they would be dying to explore and move around so as not to be on top of each other.

Hearing Jules's family's story via her father was quite sad and I can't understand why they never had contact after that. She was only 13 when it all happened.

I'm enjoying the perspective change to the Mayor as it is showing a different side to her than what we briefly saw of her in part 1. I thought she was quite cold before but actually the "cleaning" and the lose of her friend (and hoped replacement Mayor) effected her significantly.

I found Chapter 10 quite interesting seeing the dynamics between the Mayor and Bernard from IT. I thought he was very bold and over stepped the mark by speaking to the other candidate without consulting the Mayor. He tries to discredit Jules but doesn't want to actually back up his claims in any way - I think they are threatened by her in some way - I suppose only time will tell. It sounds like IT get away with a lot and I don't like the vibe they give off nor do I like Bernard as a character. Something fishy is going on with them!

I am also enjoying reading about the relationship between the mayor and the deputy as they clearly have history together.

I really like Jules. She knows what she wants, is smart and dedicated to her job. I think she'll make a great Sheriff. Do you like her as a character and think she's suited to the job?

It seems like the Mayor has become a little out of touch with how things work in the Silo and it's good that she is starting to realise that - perhaps this trip will be good for her in this respect.

I'm really pleased that the Mayor and the deputy share an intimate moment together. They appear to have had feelings for each other for years but have never done anything about it because of the ghost of the Mayor's husband who died. I think it's good that they have found their way to each other so that they can have some comfort and joy in their later years.

The second visit to IT rankles with me just as much as the first did. Bernard has such a sense of self-importance and entitlement. I think he is hungry for power and he is a nasty piece of work.

Chapter 16 was quite a shocker. I knew Bernard and the people in IT were a bit off but I didn't expect them to actually hurt someone. The Mayor seemed to think that the poison had been meant for the Deputy and I can see that because then they could put in place the Sheriff they had wanted but I think maybe it did find the intended party - the Mayor was starting to be a thorn in IT's (or at least Bernard's)side. I found this all quite sad especially after the Mayor and Marnes had expressed their feelings for each other.

In Chapter 17 we have a perspective change to Jules finishing off her job in Maintenance and then finding out what happened further up the Silo. Let's hope Jules will be sticking around as the last two people whose perspectives were focused on snuffed it!

Looking forward to Part 3 and getting to know Jules better. I hope she uses her skills to find out the truth of what happened to the Mayor (and why).

Sarah I agree with you Kara about Jahns. I think perhaps previously Jahns was more receptive to the "needs" of IT and but in quick succession, she did a few things that rubbed them up the wrong way - disregarding Bernard's advice on candidate, choosing a candidate that he clearly has some beef with for some reason, then the power holiday.

Yes I really like Jules too.
