Lisa (lisadannatt) Lots of power struggles.
Maria seriously bugs me with her helplessness and dependence on Robert

Christine Whitehead (tellme) | 21 comments It's so funny because I didn't see Maria that way. She'd been badly abused and is quite young as i recall. I saw her as a survivor.

Lisa (lisadannatt) I realize she's a young survivor, but she's fallen into that pattern of victims needing to be looked after and protected. I feel her neediness and not her strength is overemphasized.

Christine Whitehead (tellme) | 21 comments Fair comment. What did others think of Maria: Victim or survivor?

message 6: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Blocker | 5 comments I think Hemingway exaggerates Maria's fragility so we view her as the opposite of Pilar. Just as Pilar is strong, Maria is weak. Pilar is ugly; Maria is beautiful. Pilar is guilty and hardened; Maria is innocent and naive. These two characters are purposely on each end of the feminine spectrum.

Lisa (lisadannatt) Interesting Tracey, hadn't thought of that.
