Disgrace begins in Cape Town, South Africa. The author, J.M. Coetzee writes, “For a man of his age, fifty-two, divorced, he has, to his mind, solved the problem of sex rather well. Discreet Escorts is a service which David Lurie frequents Thursday nights. David is a regular patron of Soraya. David is an ARTICULATE man who lacks passion in everything from his love life, to his career, and even his hobbies. In the book, David compares sex with Soraya to “the compilation of snakes; lengthy, absorbed, but rather abstract, rather dry. It is obvious David is missing the wow factor until- Melanie. Melanie Isaacs is a student in David’s Romantics course. Like a predator, David stalks Melanie from a far, planning his casual and cool encounter. After a friendly run-in with Melanie, David invites her to his flat for a drink. David compliments Melanie on her beauty, David “invites her to do something reckless and encourages her to spend the night with him. Melanie is hesitant, yet agrees. Little does David know; his carnal desire is about deepen. David wants to see Melanie on a regular basis, but is unsuccessful. The relationship between David and Melanie becomes awkward. Melanie files a sexual HARRASSMENT complaint with the university. After the investigation, Lurie is fired .To illustrate his CHAGRIN David retreats to his daughter Lucy’s farm in Eastern Cape. The farm is quaint, and shared with a neighbor, Petrus. Lucy lives alone growing flowers, fruits, and vegetables which she sells at a market on Saturdays, and runs a kennel for dogs. As a past time, David volunteers at the local animal clinic, that is run by Bev Shaw; a close friend of Lucy’s. David assists Bev in putting animals to sleep, a job he has never gotten used to. Although David was not too keen of Bev at first, he grew to like her because of her compassion for animals. For this reason, David and Bev shared a night of intimacy and love. Everything was going well. One day after taking the dogs for a walk, David and Lucy were comforted by 3 strangers- 2 men and a boy. The strangers claimed to have an emergency and pleaded to use the telephone. Lucy tells David to stay outside with the 2 peculiar strangers and agrees to take one man inside. The man shoves Lucy to the floor and David gets hit over the head and knocked unconscious. Consequently, Lucy is raped repeatedly. Long after, David resumes consciousness and franticly tries to escape and aid Lucy. The intruders nearly set David on fire, and flee the scene. The police are telephoned, but Lucy does not press charges; this leaves David dumbfounded and expresses his dissatisfaction to Lucy. As a result, David and Lucy are distant. David decides to give Lucy some space and leaves the farm back to Cape Town. David worries about Lucy and returns a few weeks later. Much to his dismay, Lucy informs David that she is pregnant and that she is going to keep the baby, this throws David for a loop. In the end of the novel, David assimilates and resides in the country to be near Lucy.
