Hope (littlehope) | 82 comments So it has occurred to me that this December pick A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trentis the first book I will be reading at the same time as the rest of the club since The Once and Future Kingwhich I believe we read in 2010.

The only other book I have read with the club is Bitter Seeds.

I do tend to read books at a later date. just not with the club... I don't often have the money to buy them and I don't always have access to a library.

So my question here is, are there any other members like me? I've been listening to the podcast since episode 17 so I am a longtime fan, I'm just bad at book clubs...

Dustin (tillos) | 365 comments Yep. I might have read Old Man's War and Locke Lamora with the group, perhaps Hobbit but I don't think so, and I read Elantris and Curse of Chailion beforehand.

I read Fuzzy Nation afterward, (I know this because I remember the "Fuzzy Man" song came before).

Those are the only ones since Hunger Games that I've read.

I won't just pick up a book. I need a reason and I'm not really into the idea of discussing books I've just picked up, especially if they're the first in a series.

I prefer to talk about books or series I'm familiar with.

That's pretty much what just happened with me. I'm wondering if some other S&Ler has a hold after me.

Phil | 1437 comments In the last 2 years I've only read along with the group 4 or 5 times. If it's an older book I've almost always already read it and other times I'm just busy reading something else. I am slowly getting to everything on the club's bookshelf though and I enjoy reading the forums in any case.

Shaina (shainaeg) | 166 comments Since I joined the club I've tried to read everything with the group or close to the group. I've skipped and been behind on a number. My currently reading shelf includes 3 S&L picks... I hope to finish them all by the end of the year. I hope to someday make my way through the club's backlist, but that's going to take a while.

Nancy O'Toole (temporaryworlds) | 135 comments In the past year, I've read three books along with the club, five of the picks were books that I'd read previously (which I don't mind, by the way), I lemmed three, and one book was a book I'd previously lemmed. I always makes an an effort to read along with the club if it's a book I haven't read. I don't think being a little behind is the end of the world though.

Looking forward to A Natural History of Dragons.

Jennifer Swerbensky | 75 comments I think the last book I read with the group was Bridge of Birds. Some I didn't read with the group because I read them already, and some I just knew I would like. I have several of those on my to-read list, so I'll give them a try at some point. But they aren't on my priority list. That will probably happen with December's pick but I'm not sure.

Christopher Preiman | 347 comments I sometimes read with the group but I don't go out of my way for it. I'm a member of enough clubs that if I read every pick I would never read anything else.

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2655 comments Me too. I have read 27 of the Sword and Laser picks, but only half a dozen of them during the actual read along.

Me too, but it sure is nice to go back to the discussions and interact there after I've finished one, even if it isn't during the time of.

Rob (quintessential_defenestration) | 1035 comments I joined the group with the first video show, and then quickly had to abandon any hopes of reading along with the group during a very busy senior year. Thankfully grad school allows a book club friendly schedule, and I've been pretty good about keeping up since Among Others.

Yeah, I've only followed along with 6 of the last 13 books. I had already read 3 and wasn't feeling a reread. The other 4 I got towards the end of the month (I'm not a big ereader fan so I order books online sometimes) or just wasn't feeling at the time. Ancillary Justice looked really cool to me but I just wasn't in the mood for that kind of book at the time so I read Curse of Chalion instead and was glad I did so.

A book has to be terrible for me to lem it (I haven't lemmed anything in years) and I intend to read all the S&L picks but sometimes life gets in the way or a book just isn't the right fit for that time. It's all good.

Camilla (repressedpauper) Sean wrote: "I put a library hold on Ancillary Justice. I just got it today, the day after the wrap-up podcast. D'oh."

This is why I can hardly ever read with the group! EVERY TIME.

Kristina | 588 comments I keep up with the club picks. I seriously check like every day towards the end of the month to find out what the next book is-the hit the libraries (I belong to 2) or BnN if I can't find a copy to borrow (though I've been mostly lucky borrowing copies). Then I read it as fast as I can, so I can be up on the discussion.

There have been a couple I skipped and one I lemmed. But usually it's a kick in the pants to pick up something that's been on my list and other times a chance to pick up something I never would have on my own.

Kev (sporadicreviews) | 667 comments I don't think I've ever read a book along with the club. My podcast listening habits usually put me at least a week or two behind the release date of the podcast itself, so I mostly just listen to the podcast and occasionally visit the forums for book recommendations (or to see what the club thought of a book I've already read).

I may encounter spoilers that way, but the time I get around to reading a club book, I've probably forgotten the specifics apart from "that sounds like a book I should read."

Plus, T&V have great interviews with authors sometimes.

Joe Informatico (joeinformatico) | 888 comments Since I joined the club around the time we read The Lies of Locke Lamora I've mostly kept up with the club. But I've also been lucky in the past year because half of the club picks I've read in the past 3 years and didn't need to reread them. (I'd read Tigana, Assassin's Apprentice , and Dragonflight before as well, but well over a decade ago so I reread them with the club.)

The exception was Downbelow Station, because that was a particularly busy month for me, and I found the first 2/5 of the book to be a real slog, so I lemmed it. I finally finished it last week, and clearly I put it down at the wrong time, right before the really good stuff. I breezed through the rest in a couple of days and loved it.

Joseph | 2433 comments I also don't read along with the selections very often (either for this or for the other GR groups I've joined); I've done it a few times, but just when there happens to be a convergence between the selection and where my own reading is taking me.

Mostly I'm in the groups to participate in the discussions, get recommendations, and just generally enjoy the company of like-minded folk.

message 20: by Kris (last edited Dec 06, 2013 01:25PM) (new)

Kris (kvolk) I am not a good read along member but I still get a lot of good picks, comments, and especially discussion. Mostly love the podcast and listening to T and V bring it every week, or so.

message 21: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 2433 comments Oh, yeah, that's another thing -- I love the podcasts and video podcasts even when I haven't actually read the book in question.

Amanda (amandaquotidianbooks) | 50 comments I started listening to the podcasts after the video show took off, and have been working my way backwards in the past few weeks. This month will be the first SUCCESSFUL attempt at reading along with the club, though I have tried before. I'll be backtracking and reading Ancillary Justice once I finish with A Natural History of Dragons.

Emily | 6 comments As a college student, it's off and on if I have time to read with the S&L club or not. Usually when I do manage to read with the club, I don't participate in the forums, so I too feel like I'm "bad at" the book club so I appreciate your posting similar feelings! I do really love how this club has broadened my reading horizons - as a child I was a voracious reader and getting a new suggestion every month has helped keep me reading for pleasure (instead of that falling to the wayside).

Kevin | 701 comments I'm pretty horrible at this too. But I finished today, only 2 weeks late! Considering that I was 2 weeks early for Ancillary Justice I call it even and say that I managed to finish 2 books for the club in reasonable time in a row. :p

Sadly I'll be breaking my record streak since I'll not be able to fit january's pick in during this month and I'll be traveling for most of february so I probably wont even have that month's pick (nor the Delaney) before march.

Tina (javabird) | 758 comments I'm actually glad you posted this topic. I've been feeling bad because I can't keep up, but at least I know I'm not the only one.

I've been trying to read the book picks as often as possible, but by the time I get the book (usually from the library) I am often behind, and I take longer to finish a book than the rest of the group. So I don't get to join into the conversation too much. But I keep trying!

message 26: by Gary (last edited Feb 05, 2014 12:55PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gary I don't think you should beat yourself up with a book club. (Sorry, bad pun. Couldn't resist.)

For me, a book club serves as a recommendation engine. One that I actually solicited rather than one that gets foisted on me like the goodreads algorithm....

It's nice to hear other people's views on a book, but reading is essentially a solitary experience. I don't read aloud to kids or cosplay or anything like that. I have a kind of pattern to my reading, but it's a leisure activity, so I try to avoid making it "work" in the sense that it might be drudgery or deadline driven. It can be "work" in the sense that it takes effort and requires concentration--and may not be entirely pleasant--but I don't think anyone should worry about keeping up or otherwise finishing on time. It's not like YOU are doing the podcast, right?

Scott | 312 comments I joined in April last year and was really good about reading with the group. I fell behind after Chalion though, and am just getting caught up by listening to audiobooks at work. Just finished Natural History of Dragons yesterday

Amy Sinnott | 31 comments I wasn't going to read last months pick until I heard the author interview, it got me hooked :) I've only don't ring world, redshirts, the one with Mor, Chalion and I think one other (though I've only been listening since the earliest of those). I was going well for a time but I get too busy with study and work, then made the EPIC mistake of restarting wheel of time :) I'm a bit biased against laser pics- dumb because that's why I started I want to get into the and I LOVED ring world and redshirts.
