Marcy Calcagno | 28 comments My novel is almost completed and has been requested by two Editors that I met at a Pitch Conference in NYC. Would love some honest feedback before I send it out.

Story Line:

Over the last five years, Jenny has hidden her mother’s drinking that began on her twelfth birthday . . . the day her father died.

If Child Protective Services finds out, they’ll take her away. For years, Jenny has forged school notes, withdrawn from her friends and cared for her drunken mother. Senior year starts with a sigh of relief. Only one more year to keep the secret, or so she thought until the morning she finds an empty bottle of vodka nestled in the bed next to her mother’s lifeless body.

Jenny’s heart breaks for the mother she misses and for this woman lying in front of her now. She knew this day would come. Taking out a camping backpack she had hidden and three thousand dollars she squirreled away, Jenny kisses her mother’s cool forehead and leaves her Connecticut home. Where is she going? She’s not sure, but far away from here is a good start.

In this heartfelt story you will travel with Jenny from the crowded streets of New York, to the salty air of Virginia Beach, to the trolley cars in San Francisco. Living life for herself for the first time in years. Along the way she meets many interesting people. Love, loss, friendships, betrayal, adventure, finding herself and a way to forgive her mother are all part of Jenny’s journey.

Gloria Burkhart | 6 comments I really like the outline of your novel. It sounds like one I might have chosen to use with my students when I was teaching. I am a 52 year old female former teacher of middle school and high school kids. I taught Reading and English and had many interesting discussions with my students. I am also a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer. Through teaching and working with my CASA kids I think I could give you some good feedback. If you would like for me to read your book and give you some feedback I'd be glad to do so. Your blurb has me hooked already!

Marcy Calcagno | 28 comments I'm so glad you like my blurb. I would love for you to read my book. Do you normally read young adult? Are you a writer yourself?

Shawna Pinson | 7 comments I would be interested in reading for you. I am in the process of editing my own YA fiction as well. I am thinking about trying to get some readers, but I havent made the plunge yet. Im a newbie and would like trying to read for others before having mine read.

Gloria Burkhart | 6 comments I read just about anything if the topic interests me and I have found a lot of YA authors. I also tutor kids who are in the YA interest range and I am always looking for good books for them to read. I do write some. I have a blog at godsgraceandmercy.net and at various stages of writing somethings that may one day turn into a novel.

Angela (angellicia) | 8 comments I'd be interested in your story. I have two young daughters that love to read so I have expanded my library to include some younger stories for them as they grow. I love the synopsis of such a strong young lady!

Marcy Calcagno | 28 comments Shawna, Gloria and Angela - send me your e-mail addresses and I will send you the first fifty pages along with a simple questionnaire.

Angela - she really is a strong young lady. She goes through a lot, but holds her head up high.

I appreciate all of you taking the time to Beta Read for me.

Marcy Calcagno | 28 comments Shawna, Gloria & Maya - I'm sure you're all busy with the holiday's approaching as am I. I would like to give my first 50 pages a final read through and polish, before I send them off to you. You can expect the pages in the beginning of January at the e-mail address you gave me.

Enjoy your holidays. I look forward to your comments.

- Marcy

Marcy Calcagno | 28 comments Maybe at a later point. I would to hear the comments from the three people above and then make any edits first before showing it to anyone else.

Hello everyone. I thought I'd let you know about another group that can be of some use to you. "Indie Author Central" is a new group whose purpose is to provide everything indie authors need, including beta's that come to you. If you have a manuscript that you want to have a beta reader for, all you have to do is follow the instructions under the beta readers corner tab called betas and writers. You'll just need a brief description of your book and the first three pages. Our betas want to get a taste for the quality of your work before committing to the project. By showing the first three pages, they can make the decision to work with you or not, and you don't have to worry about any rejection emails after you've already sent the whole manuscript.

If your manuscript is already published and you need a few reviews, there is a place for that as well. We also do an indie book of the month, where we select an author out of the read to review program, and the group members read the book, promote the author, and have book discussion. Of authors are willing, there will also be a Q&A session.
We just started the group last week and no one has posted in the read to review section, so you won't be competing with hundreds of others, so hop on the opportunity before there is a lot of competition. Best of luck.

So Heather, where is the URL for Indie Author Central?

Maja | 2 comments Hi Marcy,

Please let me know when you are at the point that you are looking for more beta readers. I am a high school teacher and would love to read it, I read a lot of YA fiction because I try to read as many of the books my students are reading as possible. In addition, I have a student who is an avid reader and budding writer (I am currently her first editor on the novel she has started) who might enjoy reading this to give a good teenage perspective. My e-mail is [email protected] if you would like to get in touch with me.

Marcy Calcagno | 28 comments Hi Maja,

Sure. I will keep you in mind. I need to finish my first round of edits with my current beta readers, but if I think I want to do a second round of readers, I will contact you for sure.

I'm thrilled that you find the premise of the story interesting enough to reach out to me. It tells me I'm on the right track.

Marcy
