Laura (apenandzen) | 3345 comments Thanks, Will, I will definitely check that out!

message 102: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18545 comments Thanks Janice. That's good to know. A few pages after finding one line of a poem I stumbled across another poem with four lines so we're getting closer to a full one! Good to know it will count though.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Not sure which book I'll use for this challenge. I have a number to read this month and will see which fits best.

message 104: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee This is the first group i joined since I'm a new member .. and this is the first challenge I see around !

message 107: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15867 comments I hope I'm not asking a too obvious question, but I just want to be sure and I don't know if this is a language thing. I have 'town' mentioned several times in my book so far, but no 'villages'. Does it still count because it's basically the same thing, or is it specifically about the word?

No, it's a good question. A village is smaller than a town, so it's probably best if you go for the actual word.

message 109: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15867 comments Thanks Janice! I never knew if there was an actual difference or whether the choice of word depends on where you live.

message 110: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18545 comments Well the book I've been reading and keeping tally of score is not going to work after all - just realised that it's one of my chunksters too. Duhhh! So I will have to use one of the other books I read this month instead. Luckily, Hounded which I've just started has a sword and also a mention of Shakespeare!

message 111: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2953 comments ::slaps forehead:: I've just done exactly the same thing Sarah!

message 112: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3345 comments Another dumb question, sorry in advance Janice lol.....does it have to be a specific named village or is it ok if the book just mentions a village or villages. I didn't know if you're looking for the village to be prominent or the setting, or named or something like that. Thanks.

message 113: by Tasha (new)

Tasha After reading the comments about a village, I realize that The Cellist of Sarajevo is not going to work. It is a city, not a village. I overlooked that part in the rules. off to look for another book.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Janice wrote: "Enjoy! Oberon is my favourite character. "

There is a really nice surprise for Oberon in this book, which is number 6 in the Iron Druid Chronicles series. Of course, it ends with a cliff-hanger and the next book doesn't come out until June! Arrrgh!

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Sarah wrote: "Luckily, Hounded which I've just started has a sword and also a mention of Shakespeare! "

YaY! You started the Iron Druid Chronicles. Can't wait to hear what you think!

message 116: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15867 comments But Tasha, there does not need to be a village in the book. It's just for some extra points, not a requirement :)

message 117: by Tasha (new)

Tasha oh, got it. Then it's back on! Thanks so much for clearing that up Peggy! I must have read it that way in the beginning but then got confused after seeing the above posts. :D

message 118: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3345 comments Lol, I just figured you were going for the extra points too, or I'd have told you. Hehe. :))

message 119: by Tasha (new)

Tasha well, the extra points would be nice but I already have the book so I'm just going to stick with it. :)

message 120: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3345 comments Makes perfect sense! :))

message 121: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Bilney | 288 comments I'm thinking of reading Safe Passage by Ida Cook... From the info, it has some mention of the women's experiences during the London Blitz, and also focuses on their assistance of Jewish refugees after the war... Is this 'war themey' enough?

Well about a quarter of my way in to Hounded and I'm really enjoying it. Didn't take me long to read that either but now I want to put all my other books on hold so I can read this one!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15867 comments Tasha wrote: "well, the extra points would be nice but I already have the book so I'm just going to stick with it. :)"

And even if you would change, you would probably miss out on points you would get with this book but not with the other ;-)

message 124: by Tasha (new)

Tasha true. :)

Same here! Team GB won a bronze medal in the womens Slope Style earlier today! :)

Lynn | 2953 comments Aye, our first ever medal on the snow! Surely Eddie the Eagle won something didn't he? ;o)

message 130: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59011 comments I'm watching the figure skating right now. I'm surprised to see Evgeny Pletchenko still skating. He's medaled in the last 4 Olympics! 31 years old. Amazing!

I agree. Did you see the 15 year old Russian who took part in the team event yesterday? She was an incredible skater!

message 133: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2953 comments I've just turned over to the figure skating Janice, womens on currently for us.

Janice (jamasc) | 59011 comments Yes, I saw her. She's the same age as my grandson, which really put her age into perspective for me. When she has more experience at the international level, she'll be unstoppable.

message 135: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2953 comments Yeah, 15 years old and can do that? Very impressive.

message 136: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments I have read Enchantress and it has some weaponry in which they called Bladesingers. Can totally made up weapons count for this challenge?

Or maybe it could be the war one, as the kingdoms of the realm fight one another with magic runes, their bladesingers and magical wooden and iron men.

It would have to be Ice Hockey, because Biathlon specifically said it couldn't have a war theme.

I noticed that you scored Sunne in Splendor. Does this book count higher in points. Also, I left a message on the reporting thread asking how we differentiate you from our other Sarah.

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Janice wrote: "I noticed that you scored Sunne in Splendor. Does this book count higher in points. "

I just worked it out and yes, The Suune in Splendour counted as more points so I won't bother with this particular one.

Oh and I left a message on the reporting thread =]

Erin Marsh (goddessofchaos) | 7 comments I just realized the book I read this week works--count me in, representing the US in hockey. The book: Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi.

message 140: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments The Olympics in Sochi are over now, but I was just able to begin my book McCarthy's Bar: A Journey of Discovery In Ireland yesterday for this challenge.

Since we have until the end of the month... here's the run down so far. I'm representing Ireland in the event of Alpine Skiing. I'm about a third of the way done. Probably won't finish until close to week's end.

Really enjoying it. Love Pete McCarthy's voice and observations. He was born in England, but was half-Irish on his mother's side and visited Cork often in childhood. His love for Ireland and his keenly wry sense of humor really come thru. He died too soon at age 52 in 2004. Looking like a 5 star read for me.

We've got one over on Sochi. We host our YLTO Olympics all month long. Closing ceremonies won't be until Feb 28th.

Thank goodness, 'cause I'm still in training.

message 143: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59011 comments Better take off the training wheels and get in the race, Almeta. There are only 5 days left.

Now that the Toppler is over, I'm on it!

Representing Australia with Peepshow by author Leigh Redhead, an ex-stripper and Australian. In which Simone Kirsch, private eye and ex-stripper attempts to find her best friend Chloe, a fellow stripper, kidnapped somewhere in Australia.

Although I could take the Biathlon with hand guns, or Curling with a rockabilly band called Las Vegas Grind...

I plan to win the Figure Skating competition, claiming pole dancing as an athletic and creative art!
