Lisarenee | 2046 comments So, do you prefer to read books with a HEA (Happily Ever After) or have a HFN (Happy For Now) type of romance? HFN type romances are seen more frequently in UF and HEA are more common in paranormal romances, but occasionally an Urban Fantasy heroine and/or hero will become part of a couple and the series continues on (as in Cat and Bones). Sometimes, however, the two becoming a couple marks the death of a series as people think it loses some of the heat and magic it previously had. What do you think? Can a series keep your attention after the main character(s) become part of a couple? Can you think of any that have? Also, if you become attached to the main character's significant other, do you hate it when the author drops him (Richelle Mead's Georgina Kincaid series comes to mind) and comes up with a new love interest? Does that ruin the series for you? Let us know.

LastBreath (last_breath) | 241 comments I prefer the HFN, which is a total contradiction, because I'm a total sucker for a well written Were-mance. And as we all know it's bound to end up in the HEA mode. I suppose that's why I'm enjoying Leigh Evans Mystwalker series. Instead of the main female character going from virginal to sex kitten after their first night, she does the proper thing and makes him look at her. I mean really look at her and asks "Do you see me?". She knew his wolf saw her, as did her own wolf. But she wanted him to see and love her human, Fae and Were.

But you know I've never really thought about UF being a HFN and PNR the HEA. It's definitely gonna make me seriously think things over while reading :-)

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 127 comments I like both!

The Kate Daniels series is definitely one where it shows how a well devoloped couple can work for UF.

I tend to like HFN though, that can develop into HEA. If you get my meaning. Kind of like the Riley Jenson series.

Karena (karenafagan) I like series that don't make the romance the big part of the series. E.g. Rachel Morgan in The Hollows series. She has relationships throughout the series, but they're really not the point. Even when the series is over, whoever she does end up with isn't really the big deal. Her HEA isn't who she ends up with, it's about her place in the world.

In contrast I also liked say, the Chicagoland Vampire series. The Merit/Ethan thing. It kind sets them up at the beginning as the HEA but it's how they get there. Can they work together and be "together" at the same time? But really the story is about whatever supernatural shenanigans that are going on.

It's probably why I prefer UF to PNR. I don't mind some romance, but I don't want that to drive the plot. Personal taste in books of course.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Good question!

You know I like the HEA. Reality sucks so in my fantasy world I like to believe it is all going to work out no matter what.

To the bigger point I think it is difficult regardless of the series to sustain a relationship over several books and the ones who I think have done it well are

*Patricia Briggs, Alpha and Omega series (Anna and Charles) she is doing pretty well in the Mercy series for that matter
*Ilona Andrews with Kate and Curran in the Kate Daniels series
*Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter) Elena and Raphael
*Carrie Vaughn with Kitty and Ben
*JD Robb with Eve Dallas and Roarke

At the same time I do like some PNR series that feature one couple in each book and they have a HEA like Lords of the Underworld or Immortals After Dark.

Generally speaking though I still need more than romance to make a story .

Bungluna | 32 comments In PNR, the HEA is almost an obligation, because each book features a different couple and Romaces MUST HAVE A HAPPY ENDING!

I prefer a resolution of some sort. If the author deems it necessary to separate a couple later on in the series, I want a good reason why other than it will wring emotion from me as a reader.

I like the HEA that's well crafted. Part of the joy of reading on-going series is to see a relationship crafted over time, like Eve & Roarke in the ...in Death series.

Sandra | 4721 comments I love a HEA, but that doesn't mean it has to happen all at once. Over several books is fine ie Kate Daniels, Mercy, Eve & Roarke etc. All my favs :)

For UF centred books I'm quite happy with HFN plots.

I agree with what everyone has already said.

And LastBreath, I'm loving the Mystwalker series, eagerly awaiting what comes next. Which is the sign of a good series.

Carolyn F. I like both or even ones which end really sad. Sometimes I love a book that has me crying because it's ending is so awful. I feel the same with movies too, they don't need a happy or happyish ending.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 127 comments I love a good sad ending.

Sara | 860 comments For the most part, I prefer romances that you get to see develop over the course of the series as opposed to the couple meets and several pages letter - boom! instant soul mates.

message 16: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 2046 comments I think the Chicagoland Vampires series would be an excellent example of Happy For Now. There's a little romance, no marriage proposal (at least not in the ones I've read), and no assurance that there will be one in the future.
