Preb brushed up against this in his first impression comment, wondering aloud if this was the same gun that the Doc (or Hemingway's father) took his own life with, but this time through the story I read that scene not as the Doc contemplating revenge on Dick, but as the Doc contemplating suicide right then, right there.

The weight of the moment: his insufferable wife, the seeming meaninglessness of his work as a Doctor, his possible cowardice in the face of Dick's insults...could all of this have him contemplating shooting himself right there in that moment? I think possibly. And maybe it is only the thought of Nick, the boy who loves him and whom he loves, that saves him.

ok, brad, i just reread it. the wife doesn't ask about nick till after the doc puts the gun back into the corner. so, doc could have thought about nick on his own,or maybe he was thinking about taking the gun outside to look for dick, changed his mind, and then thinking of nick after his wife asked for him to come inside the cottage??? what makes hemingway, hemingway,is it's all left to interpretation! wish we could ask papa himself, eh?

I could never ask an author what they intended. For me, once they publish it they lose claim to the story and their intention matters not a whit for me anymore. But damn, he is fantastic. I would have loved to go fishing with him, maybe spar with him, get drunk with him, but I think I would have stayed away from his meanings.

Don't they mention wanting to get in a fight with Hemingway in Fight Club somewhere? He'd be my pick for sure. And Shatner.

lol! yeah, i read fight club, and saw the movie. i'll have to ask my son about hemingway. i don't remember that, offhand. that' s interesting, because you know a lot of men thought that was a very macho book, and since then chuck's come out of the closet himself.. my son got me started on chuck's books, and we saw him in person at a signing. he was awesome.

I hope that people eventually realize that being gay doesn't preclude being "macho".
